Morrison Hotel Gallery is pleased to present the U. S. premiere of fine art music photographer Eddie Sung. A native of Singapore, Sung has had a profound journey to becoming one of his country's most respected photographers. His exhibit, A View from Asia: The Photography of Eddie Sung, represents a fascinating culture exchange between Western rock musicians from an Eastern perspective. Sung's exhibit will be at the MHG's Soho loft located at 116 Prince Street from July 11th until August 2nd with a special reception from 7 to 10 PM on Thursday, July 10th. MHG will have Eddie Sung's books on hand at the exhibit available for donations, which will go to the Rational Animal charity.
Eddie Sung is one of Asia's preeminent fine art music photographers, and has the added distinction of being the first Asian photographer to exhibit at the Morrison Hotel Gallery. Though this will be Sung's photographic debut in the U.S., it won't be the first time his work has been seen by stateside rock fans. Eddie Sung's work appears on albums by artists as diverse as Slipknot, Blondie, the Beach Boys, Kitaro, and includes series of portraits of Lady Gaga, Slash, Morrissey and bands Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots and Slayer. His work is unique in that his trademark style captures the vibrancy and energy of music and the Zen of music artists in live performance with a portraiture approach. "The stage is my studio," he explains.
Most of Sung's work comes from concerts in Singapore and surrounding areas. "I find that visiting rock acts come to Singapore, and the Far East, very open and inspired by the Asian fan-base so they put on really visually stunning concerts," Sung offers.
Blondie's Debbie Harry and Chris Stein have appraised Sung's work thusly: "We met Eddie on a trip to Singapore. Besides being a gentleman he has a terrific photographic eye that we have utilized on various occasions for our band. Eddie is devoted to music and photography and should be considered as an A-list camera handler."
At 44, Eddie re-invented himself -- from a clean-cut corporate executive in the first half of his life -- to a bearded fine art music photographer in the second half of his life. He says, "In my second life, my inner creativity came out, it was always there, just hidden under the tie."
Sung is regarded as Singapore's most celebrated rock photographer, sweeping the first, second and third prizes of the 2006 Lucie Awards for Non-Pro Music category. His rock images now grace the walls of Hard Rock Cafes, rock musicians' CDs, DVDs, and websites, as well as covers/ pages of leading newspapers and photographic magazines. He has also published a trilogy of well-received art/photography books - Eclectic Sanctum, Monochrome Manifestos, and Sonic Solitude.
