Strongman Band Manager,

IN FASHION
Phil
started work in fashion at 17, as a Saturday boy who then became a designer for
seminal 'street couture' boutique ACME ATTRACTIONS, a King's Road basement
managed by DON LETTS (film-maker, BBC Radio 6 DJ) and JEANETTE LEE (now CEO at
ROUGH TRADE). ACME's customers included JOE STRUMMER of THE CLASH, BOB MARLEY,
SID VICIOUS, NICK LOWE, CHRISSIE HYNDE, BILLY IDOL, PAUL GORMAN, CHRIS SULLIVAN
and future members of THE DAMNED, PiL etc. After helping
launch BOY (aka BOY LONDON) at the height of 1977's punk explosion, Phil went on
to supply designs to PX, FANS,
OFFICE, ROCK A
CHA & SIGN OF THE TIMES. Amongst his friends and acquaintances during this
time were all the major music groups as well as VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, MALCOLM
McLAREN, BOY GEORGE, ADAM ANT, LLOYD JOHNSON and Acme/BOY founders STEPH RAYNER
and JOHN KRIVINE. Since the early 80s Phil has been a band manager, music
journalist, book author, environmentalist and film-maker. His music and
fashion-related books include PRETTY VACANT, METAL BOX, COCAINE AND JOHN LENNON:
LIFE, TIMES AND ASSASSINATION. He currently runs the PS ACME GALLERY in West
Dalston.
Phil's
forthcoming feature length film ANARCHY! McLAREN WESTWOOD GANG has been
described as 'the Apocalypse Now of art documentaries' and concerns ‘sex, drugs,
rock’n’roll, fashion, crime, politics. The film will be screened this February
at the Regents Street Cinema – for more details go to www.regentstreetcinema.com.
The
buzz punk created is one of massive influence – look in the pre-punk 1970s
fashion magazines for a line about the ‘Little Black Dress’, I couldn’t find
one. It had been almost completely forgotten. Dark, stark clothing came back
with Punk and has swung in and out of vogue ever since. Look in the same
magazines for pictures of narrow slacks or high waist peg trousers or even tight
drainpipe jeans – in almost every case, there aren’t any. Or look in the
pre-punk music press for successful independent labels, there’s barely
one…
From
music to journalism to hair to make-up to shoes to clothes to cultural attitudes
- everything was changed by punk. And those involved in Punk were to be key
figures in all that followed - from New Wave to Power Pop to Post-Punk to Gothic
to New Romanticism to Rockabilly, 2-Tone, Warehouse, Acid House, Rave, Grunge,
Britpop and Indie. Many of punk’s leading lights - from McLaren and Westwood to
Boy George, Adam Ant, Kevin Rowlands, Julie Burchill, Tony Parsons and Sting –
then went on to dominate the 80s and 90s … and 40 years later we have still have
punk attitudes and punk fashion and cyber-punk and punk ale and punk films and
even golf punk.
But
why? What made that movement so creative and dynamic? And so influential? That’s
what is to be discussed in Anarchy In Fashion; how a gang of ‘isolated
non-conformists’ took the music and fashion world by storm, created the biggest
mass art movement since Dada and – for a time – changed everything. Why did that
happen then…and are there any lessons for today?
