According to the agenda, on Tuesday May 24, 2016 there will
be a Fireside Chat regarding “Google & Levi Strauss Project Jacquard” at the
WEAR conference. You can see the full agenda for the day at

Project Jacquard makes
it possible to weave touch and gesture interactivity into any textile using
standard, industrial looms. This is possible thanks to new conductive yarns, created in
collaboration with our industrial partners.
Jacquard yarn structures combine thin, metallic alloys with
natural and synthetic yarns like cotton, polyester, or silk, making the yarn
strong enough to be woven on any industrial loom.
Jacquard yarns are indistinguishable from the traditional
yarns that are used to produce fabrics today.
Captured touch and gesture data is wirelessly transmitted to
mobile phones or other devices to control a wide range of functions, connecting
the user to online services, apps, or phone features.
By the way, we think it is a bit confusing that Google
choose to use the word Jacquard which is already a term used in the textile &
apparel industry. We are actually sort of curious as to why they did not
come up with a “new” term for their project. They are sort of changing a long
standing definition. Maybe they should have consulted with Apparel Search
before making such an important decision. If you are interested, you can learn
more about
the jacquard loom in our definitions section.
