When to Buy a Suit for Prom

When is the best time to buy a suit for prom?

Make your purchase with plenty of time before the event, when they are on sale, and only if you actually need a suit and not a tuxedo.

1) BEFORE the prom.  Well, that was obvious.  Make sure to start your prom suit shopping at least two weeks before the date of the event.
  • Do NOT wait for the last minute.  Keep in mind that suit jackets and pants often need tailoring.  Make sure to allow time for a tailor to adjust the size of your suit so that it fits you properly.
2) When suits are on SALE.
  • Suits are not inexpensive like t-shirts.  Do you best to not pay full retail prices.  Find a discount retailer or shop when suits or on sale (or both).
  • Depending on the date of your prom, you may get lucky when departments stores have Easter holiday sales events.
3) Suits verse tuxedo's for prom.  Does your school suggest a SUIT?
  • Make sure you know which garment has been selected by your school.  A suit and a tuxedo is a completely different garment.  It would not be the end of the world, but typically you would not want to show up wearing a suit if everyone else at the prom is wearing a tuxedo.
In the United States, and increasingly in the United Kingdom and Canada, prom is a formal dance or gathering of high school students. This event is typically held near the end of the senior year (the last year of high school). Proms figure greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students.  A black tie (tuxedo) is generally worn to senior prom.  However, the dress code is sometimes a suit rather than a tuxedo.  Junior prom which is for juniors in high school may be a more likely candidate for suits.  Consult with your school regarding the suggested clothing to be worn.

Note: you may not want to buy a prom suit at all.  It is very possible that you can borrow one or find a place that rents them.
