Industry Report

• The global and South Asian textile and garment machinery sector is booming. The global textile machinery market is growing at 11.11% from US$ 31.17 billion in 2014 to US$ 42.753 billion in 2017 and is further expected to touch US$ 54.679 billion by 2022.

• India, the second largest textile manufacturing country in the world is also the second largest market for textile machinery and technology. The Indian market for textile machinery grew from US$ 1.1 billion in 2012-13 to around US$ 1.5 billion in 2016-17.

•  Pakistan’s import of textile machinery grew by around 16.12% to US$ 88.3 million in July-August 2018, from US$ 76 million in July- August 2017.

•  Bangladesh saw imports of textile machinery grow 11% to US$ 984.4 million in 2015-16, from US$ 885.9 million in 2014- 15.

•  Sri Lanka’s overall machinery imports grew by 9% in 2016 to US$ 1.8 billion. The apparel industry is a key sector that needs continuous upgrading and acquisition of new technology and equipment.

• These are clear indicators of the growth in demand and imports of textile and garment machinery in South Asia.
