Popular Oscar Dress Colors

Crowning the luckiest dress color for Academy Award winners is black, with Frances McDormand, who took home the award for Best Actress award last night, adding to the list of 21 winning women wearing black taking home a shiny gold statuette.

Some of these beautiful dresses include Nicole Kidman’s 2003 Jean Paul Gaultier frock, Julia Roberts’ 2001 vintage Valentino gown and Jessica Lange’s 1995 Calvin Klein number.

In second place for luckiest dress color is white, with 12 white gowns walking away with an award. Some of these include Renée Zellweger’s 2020 custom Armani Privé gown and Marion Cotillard’s art deco mermaid inspired Jean Paul Gaultier dress.

In third is blue with now 11 gorgeous gowns winning since 1980, with Best Supporting Actress Youn Yuh-Jung's blue dress adding to the list of those including that of Brie Larson in 2016 wearing Gucci and Hilary Swank in 2005 wearing a memorable Guy Laroche gown with a plunging back.

In fourth is gold with 7 winning actresses wearing the color of the statuette taking one home themselves and in fifth is green with 6 winners.

Methodology

Using the Oscars official list of the past winners from 1980 to 2021, Compare.bet searched each winning actress and their gown from the year they won to make a list of winning colors.

Compare.bet then decided which color was deemed to be the luckiest by seeming the number of times an actress had won in that colour dress.

*Due to consistency reasoning, Compare.bet stopped at 1980 as the further they went back, the harder it became to identify colors.

**Katherine Hepburn wasn’t included as she didn’t attend and Peggy Ashcroft wasn’t included due to images of her dress not showing the color.
