You don't need a fortune to launch a clothing line — but you do need a plan. We hear from aspiring designers all the time, and the ones who succeed on a budget share one trait: they spend carefully on the things that matter (fabric, samples, fit) and skip the things that don't (a giant first collection, a fancy office, inventory nobody has ordered yet). Here's a practical checklist to get your label off the ground without draining your savings.
1. Pick a narrow niche
"Clothing for everyone" is a plan to compete with everyone. A tight niche — organic cotton baby clothes, extended-size workwear, vintage-inspired dresses in small sizes — lets a small brand stand out and speak directly to real buyers. Write down exactly who your customer is, what problem your clothes solve for them, and why they would pick you over the big names. If you can't answer that in two sentences, your niche is still too broad.
