Fashion E-commerce Trends

The fashion industry has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent decades, driven by shifting consumer behaviors and technological advancements. The rise of fashion e-commerce has been a key driver of this transformation. In this article, we will explore how clothing retail has changed over the past several decades and delve into the trending e-commerce methods that are reshaping the industry. We will also discuss how clothing companies can harness these trends to enhance their business.

A Brief Evolution of Clothing Retail

Brick-and-Mortar Dominance (Pre-2000s):

Before the digital age, clothing retail was synonymous with brick-and-mortar stores. Shoppers would visit physical stores to browse and make purchases. Catalog shopping was another option, albeit less popular.

Era of E-commerce (2000s):

The advent of the internet brought about the first wave of e-commerce. Online shopping platforms like Amazon and eBay emerged, offering a wide range of products, including clothing. Early concerns about security and fit deterred some fashion shoppers, but these hurdles gradually diminished.

Fuel & Inflation Charge Effect on Fashion Industry

Amazon announced on April 13, 2022 that they would be implementing a 5% fuel & inflation surcharge to help offset rising costs.  They will not be adding this cost direct to consumers as the fees will be charges given to third-party sellers who utilize Amazon's fulfillment services.  Although the charge is not direct to the consumer, the odds are rather good that the third party sellers will increase their cost to consumers.

How will this fuel & inflation charge effect the fashion industry?

Lola and the Boys Children's Fashion

It’s not every day that an 11-year-old gets to design a clothing line – but that’s the story behind online boutique Lola and the Boys, where former Ford model Irina Ovrutsky and her daughter/child model Lola collaborate to create distinctive but affordable clothes for fashionistas from toddlers to tweens.
Featuring everything from boy’s harem pants covered in stars to gossamer-like lace dresses and fun mother/daughter-designed prints (think doodles, emojis and ice cream cones), the collection also includes baby wear, Mommy and Me options, and bomber jackets like the best-selling $51 satin number adorned with a unicorn surrounded by flowers and butterflies.

Parenthood is busy. It’s hard to find the time to search for the perfect party dress or new pair of pants for your little ones. That’s where Lola + the Boys comes in.  They do the hard work of hand selecting the latest and greatest in children’s fashion, so it’s easy for you to find looks that you love.

Below are a few examples of what can be found at this trendy children's fashion boutique.

Barely a year after launching, the site is getting orders from as far away as the UK, Japan and Australia – testimony to the fact that Ovrutsky is filling a gap in the child’s clothing market with the help of her own children, who frequently make suggestions in the all-in-the-family business. Looks vary in style from boho-chic to rocker-cool to suit different tastes and moods.

Fashion Advertising Goes Crazy

I am about to point out to you a new trend in advertising that may blow your mind.  It is the concept of clothing stores driving web traffic to their competitors websites.  Am I nuts, or does that concept sound off the wall.

Fashion advertising is not what it once was?  In the past it was rather simple. Clothing companies would advertise in fashion magazines, news papers, on the radio, and billboards.  The very large apparel companies would advertise on television.

Along came the internet and the game changed.  The world of fashion advertising expanded into an entirely new realm of possibilities.   The industry continued to advertise with traditional methods, but at the same time began to advertise in ways that one would almost consider to be crazy.

A prime example of border line insanity is the concept of clothing stores placing advertisements on their own websites for "other" clothing stores.

Below is an example of advertisements on the Macy's website March 15, 2016. Toward the bottom of this clothing retailers page they have advertisements linking to TheLimited.com, Lands End, Zulily, and others.  Although I am not an expert, I believe those other companies are competitors of Macy's.  You can click below to enlarge the image.
Macy's is not the only fashion company taking part in such activities.  Below is a page from JCPenney March 15, 2016.  You will see toward the bottom of the image the Google ads, which potentially link viewers away to the Chadwicks, Blair, Shopsteal, and other websites.
It is important to note that the Google ads that appear on the Macy's & JCPenney website will most likely rotate to different companies.  These retailers possibly set the filters to exclude some key competitors, but I am really not sure if they actually utilize that feature.  Even if they do filter out some of the other competitive boutiques, they are clearly linking to competition as illustrated in the images above.

Let's keep in mind that other apparel retailers are utilizing similar strategies, so I am really not trying to pick on Macy's and JCP.  They are simply the first two that I noticed this evening.

Is this sort of fashion industry advertising genius or foolish?  Do you think that we need to put the marketing department into straight jackets?

The real question with this sort of advertising is, "are retailers simply grasping for earnings because they are not converting enough viewers into buyers on their own site?"  In other words, are they forced to try and earn advertising revenue because they are not making enough sales revenue?

The concept being, some websites have tons of traffic, but are possibly not converting enough "viewers" into "shoppers" (buyers).  Rather than simply watch viewers enter the site and then leave with out any sort of earnings, it may be better to earn advertising commission by sending the viewer else where.

Is this method of earning money from a retail web site a sign of weakness or intelligence?

Amazon Private Label Fashion

Is it true that Amazon is pushing forward to expand a private label apparel program?
Lark & Ro

Amazon has reportedly launched seven private label fashion brands and up to 1,800 new products ranging from men's suits to women's accessories to children's clothing.  Its own trademarked brands include Franklin & Freeman, Franklin Tailored, North Eleven, Scout + Ro and Society New York.

Engadget reported, “Trademark searches reveal that Amazon owns the trademarks on the brands, and it recently posted job listings hinting that it may start its own clothing line.” View the entire Engadget Amazons Private Label Fashion article.

It has been reported that Amazon makes a higher profit on apparel then on electronics.  However, only approximately 15 percent of Amazon's active customers ever buy clothing and accessories on the site.  Clearly Amazon wants to increase the amount of fashion sold on the site.

The Engadget article also mentions that Amazon has “partnered with fashion brands like LaCoste, Camper and DKNYC. However, the company's VP of fashion, Jeff Yurcisin, said at a retail clothing show last year that "when we see gaps, when certain brands have actually decided for their own reasons not to sell with us, our customer still wants a product like that."  For that point of view, we'd expect many of Amazon's private label products to be in the same style as certain name brands.”

It appears that Amazon hasn't promoted the apparel venture as of yet.  Most likely they are getting organized more before official marketing campaigns launch (if any).

Amazon has also been scooping up online fashion stores, like ShopBop, MyHabit, and EastDane.

How will the Amazon private label fashion growth impact the apparel industry?

Same Day Delivery: Really Fast Fashion

Fast fashion has various meaning in the apparel industry.  If you are interested, you can read about fast fashion in the definitions section.  However, in this post we are talking about “Really Fast Fashion” which is the result of “same day delivery”.

Same day delivery occurs when you order clothing online and receive it at your home that same exact day.  If you are looking for fast, you can’t get much faster.  Sure, you can shop in a store and have your clothing instantaneously.  But if you wish to shop online, receiving product the exact same day you click the buy button is REALLY fast.
Delivering Fast Fashion
Same-day shipping is not entirely new.  It has been around for a few years.  However, it appears to be improving.  The new trend is in crowdsourcing people to delivery product.  For example, Uber and Deliv.  Will “same day shipping” be the replacement for “free shipping” as the new must-have promotion?

Shipping clothes, shoes, or fashion accessories to arrive to a consumer the same day it is ordered is obviously complicated and potentially money losing for the retailer.  Many factors come into play with such an undertaking.  A good question is, “do consumers want or need same day service?”.  Sure, it would be nice, but my guess is that the average person is not typically in need of receiving new clothes with such urgency.

Amazon, Kohl’s, Macy’s, and a few other online retailers are experimenting with the concept of same day delivery.  And yes, using drones to fly the merchandise to your house has been considered.  If you own a fashion boutique or work for a large retailer, you may want to investigate the following resources.

UberRush: Uber has developed a same-day delivery program for brick-and-mortar businesses under the name “UberRush.”  When customers are waiting, every minute counts. UberRUSH helps you avoid costly bottlenecks during your busiest hours. You can get as many deliveries on the road as you need. As fast as you need them.  Real-time tracking means you and your customers can always see where the delivery is on the map. This visibility helps make for smoother pickups and dropoffs. No more nervous phone calls from customers.  UberRUSH integrates with platforms like Shopify and Clover so you can build deliveries right into your day-to-day operations.  No need to worry about complicated set-up or installation.

Kohl’s Same Day Shipping: Kohl's said it would offer same-day deliveries in Boston, Brooklyn/Queens, Los Angeles, Miami, Northern New Jersey, and Philadelphia in the coming weeks.  It had been testing the service in San Francisco, the Bay Area and Chicago.

Amazon Same Day: Prime members in selected areas now receive FREE Same-Day Delivery on qualifying orders over $35.  Amazon has made it simple to find the stuff that you want, and get it on your doorstep before bedtime. Just look for the Prime FREE Same-Day logo on eligible items while shopping, or choose it in the filter menu to see all the items you can get tonight.  Order by noon, and you’ll get it by 9pm, seven days a week.  Or order later in the day with Prime FREE One-Day to get free delivery tomorrow.

FedEx Same Day Shipments: For those times when you can’t afford to wait another day, FedEx SameDay is one of the fastest shipping option available to you.  Reliable door-to-door delivery of your time-sensitive shipments within only hours.

UPS Same Day Service: UPS Express Critical® provides a broad range of urgent and same-day delivery options for lightweight to heavyweight shipments around the world.  UPS can provide you with access to virtually any kind of aircraft or vehicle needed for urgent and same day delivery.  With a full suite of global, urgent and same-day delivery services, they have the ability to optimize solutions for nearly every shipment.  Their experienced team can quickly assess a critical situation, identify transportation alternatives and implement a delivery solution that meets your time and cost requirements.

It is important to note that same day shipping does have time constraints.  The retailer most likely will set a mandatory time deadline.  For example, you may have to have your order into their system by noon to qualify for the same day service.  You would have to review the policy on a case by case basis.

Do you think that in the future all online retailers will provide same day delivery?  Or is this just another fad.

In your opinion, should same day service be provided by all online clothing retailers.

Kohl’s Delivers Same Day Fashion

Do you want your fashion purchases to arrive to you the same day you order them online?  Kohl’s has been taking steps to provide such a service.

Orders placed by 1pm will be delivered by 8pm same day.  Orders placed after 1pm will be delivered next day.

Kohl's said it would offer same-day deliveries in Boston, Brooklyn/Queens, Los Angeles, Miami, Northern New Jersey, and Philadelphia in the coming weeks.  It had been testing the service in San Francisco, the Bay Area and Chicago.
Kohl's same day shipping
* Kohl’s is currently piloting this service (testing this service).  This option may not be available at your location.  Orders placed after 1pm are shipped next day.

** Your order can be shipped to APO/FPO, Alaska and Hawaii destinations via our Standard Ground service only. Our priority options (One, Two- and Same-Day) are not available for these destinations.

Please note that the delivery schedule is subject to change.  You should view their website to view the Kohl’s shipping method options.

The company said it had tied up with Deliv, an Uber-like startup that contracts drivers to pick up ordered items from stores and malls and deliver them to customers.  Deliv provides same day delivery from top retailers to their customers using a crowd-sourced workforce.  Deliv uses the technology advancements of omni-channel platforms and GPS-enabled smartphones to mobilize their crowd of drivers.  For the first time in history, the fastest and most flexible same-day delivery is now also the cheapest shipping option.

Deliv also handles Macy's same-day delivery across the 17 cities the retailer offers the service.

Sequential Brands Group, Inc. announced on September 10, 2015 a partnership with Delivery Agent, Inc., the market leader in turning audiences into customers for leading global brands, to power digital commerce for the Jessica Simpson brand.

For the first phase of the launch, which is set to debut with the 10th Anniversary of the brand, fans will have the ability to shop Jessica Simpson products via her own branded digital store at www.jessicasimpson.com. Subsequent launches will include shopping through Delivery Agent's Smart TV app, ShopTV®, as well as via social media platforms including Twitter.

"Our consumers and fans have always been our top priority at the Jessica Simpson Collection," said Ms. Simpson. "As we celebrate our 10 year anniversary, I am so excited to be able to offer my fans the opportunity to directly connect with our merchandise.  Shoppers will now be able to visit the Jessica Simpson store online - I personally hand-picked my favorite items for the launch across all categories.  Soon our customers will be able to purchase through buy buttons on the social channels they are using every day."

"As we build the next chapter of the Jessica brand story, it is essential to create an omni-channel experience," said Jameel Spencer, Division President of Fashion & Entertainment at Sequential Brands. "Providing an opportunity to engage directly with the fans, and provide them with exclusive content, while transacting simultaneously, has always been a goal of Jessica's. Through Delivery Agent's platform, we are able to expose her fans to a totally new shopping experience."

Simpson has personally curated a selection of hand-picked items from across the collection for the launch and beyond, including a special 10th Anniversary capsule collection that will be available to fans around the globe. Delivery Agent is empowering fans to purchase and engage with items from the Jessica Simpson Collection and her favorite styles across platforms and devices, from mobile to television.

"Over the last 10 years, Jessica Simpson has catapulted her lifestyle brand into a billion-dollar fashion-empire by engaging her global fan base, as evidenced by her more than 12 million social media followers on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest," said Mike Fitzsimmons, Delivery Agent CEO. "As a result of this partnership, fans will be able to shop for Jessica Simpson products on the digital platforms they engage with daily."

Founded in 2005, the Jessica Simpson Collection is a signature lifestyle brand, inspired by and designed in collaboration with multi-platinum, award-winning singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist and style icon, Jessica Simpson, along with her mother Tina. The growing collection includes products in more than 32 categories including footwear, apparel, accessories, fragrance, a home collection and a line of performance active wear set to launch later this year. For more information, visit http://jessicasimpson.com.
