Fabric Stores in New York

Fabric Store
Are you looking to purchase fabric in New York?  If you are in the city, we would suggest heading into the garment district to locate various textile retailers.  You will find plenty of fabric stores on or near 38th street.  The Garment District, also known as the Garment Center, the Fashion District, or the Fashion Center, is a neighborhood located in the Manhattan borough of New York City.  The dense concentration of fashion relevant businesses give the neighborhood its name.  In this district garmentos can find trim & notions relevant to clothes, footwear, and accessories.  The area contains manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers.  The majority of store fronts are for selling to the trade only.  They don’t typically sell to the general public.  The neighborhood is less than 1 square mile (2.6 km2), and has generally been considered to lie between Fifth Avenue and Ninth Avenue, from 34th to 42nd Streets (in recent years, this range may have shrunk a bit).  If you are not familiar with the city, you may want to aim for 38th street between 7th & 8th Avenue.

Here are a few New York fabric stores that may be of interest for your project:

New York fabric stores help support the manufacturing component of the NYC fashion industry.  In addition to actual manufacturing, the fabrics found in local stores are used for merchandising purposes and sample making.  Even if some of the mass production is manufactured in other countries, the fabrics purchased in New York area have importance to the global industry.  Fashion designers visit Manhattan from various boroughs as well as other states.  It is not uncommon for clothing businesses to shop the NY fabric stores even if their headquarters are from other areas of the tristate region (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut).

B&J Fabrics: B&J Fabrics is a family-owned, family-run fabric retail store specializing in ladies’ fashion textiles. Their mission is to provide their customers with the largest and latest selection of high-end fabrics from all over the world. B&J is one of the best and most famous fashion fabric retail stores in the USA and the World. They are located on 7th Avenue, or "Fashion Avenue," in Manhattan.  Address: 525 Seventh Ave. New York, NY  10018 Phone (212) 354-8150

Mood Designer Fabrics: Mood Fabrics is one of the top shopping destination for fashion fabric in the world:  The NYC flagship store alone plays host to more than 1,200 customers every day. Named one of “Fashion’s 50 Most Powerful” by The New York Daily News, Mood Fabrics has played a vital role in the fashion world for more than two decades.  The company prides itself on being a family business that is the manifestation of founder Jack Sauma’s dream, and a true American success story.  Address: 225 W. 37th St. New York, NY 10018 Phone (212) 730-5003

New York Elegant Fabrics: Founded in 1989, New York Elegant Fabrics serves the theatrical and fashion industries in New York City, offering almost 20,000 square feet of retail space.  Sharing experience in textiles for more than 30 years each, the family has remained an important part of the garment district.
Address: 224 W 40th St New York, NY 10018 Phone (212) 302-4980

Rosen & Chaddick Fabrics: Located in the heart of New York City's Garment center, this business has been family owned and operated for over 60 years. Featured in this image, are current owners, Ellen Rosen and David Chadick. Our new location is a one floor showroom stocked with beautiful designer fabrics from all over the world. Rosen & Chadick prides themselves on having the most desirable fabric selections in New York City.  Address: 561 Seventh Ave. New York, NY  10018 Phone (212) 869-0142

Sure this is only a few of the many options.

If you would like to consider other cities or states, you can try our fabric retailer and fabric wholesaler sections for additional options.

How do I make money with a FASHION BLOG?  Wow, that's an amazing question.

The most important question that a fashion blogger should ask his or her self is, "why am I creating a blog?".  It needs to be determined if you are creating one for love or for money.  If you are simply creating a blog for the love of doing so, that is awesome.  You are already a success.

ACME's customers included JOE STRUMMER of THE CLASH, BOB MARLEY, SID VICIOUS, NICK LOWE, CHRISSIE HYNDE, BILLY IDOL, PAUL GORMAN, CHRIS SULLIVAN and future members of THE DAMNED, PiL etc. After helping launch BOY (aka BOY LONDON) at the height of 1977's punk explosion, Phil went on to supply designs to PX, FANS,
OFFICE, ROCK A CHA & SIGN OF THE TIMES. Amongst his friends and acquaintances during this time were all the major music groups as well as VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, MALCOLM McLAREN, BOY GEORGE, ADAM ANT, LLOYD JOHNSON and Acme/BOY founders STEPH RAYNER and JOHN KRIVINE. Since the early 80s Phil has been a band manager, music journalist, book author, environmentalist and film-maker. His music and fashion-related books include PRETTY VACANT, METAL BOX, COCAINE AND JOHN LENNON: LIFE, TIMES AND ASSASSINATION. He currently runs the PS ACME GALLERY in West Dalston.
Phil's forthcoming feature length film ANARCHY! McLAREN WESTWOOD GANG has been described as 'the Apocalypse Now of art documentaries' and concerns ‘sex, drugs, rock’n’roll, fashion, crime, politics. The film will be screened this February at the Regents Street Cinema – for more details go to www.regentstreetcinema.com.
The buzz punk created is one of massive influence – look in the pre-punk 1970s fashion magazines for a line about the ‘Little Black Dress’, I couldn’t find one. It had been almost completely forgotten. Dark, stark clothing came back with Punk and has swung in and out of vogue ever since. Look in the same magazines for pictures of narrow slacks or high waist peg trousers or even tight drainpipe jeans – in almost every case, there aren’t any. Or look in the pre-punk music press for successful independent labels, there’s barely one…
From music to journalism to hair to make-up to shoes to clothes to cultural attitudes - everything was changed by punk. And those involved in Punk were to be key figures in all that followed - from New Wave to Power Pop to Post-Punk to Gothic to New Romanticism to Rockabilly, 2-Tone, Warehouse, Acid House, Rave, Grunge, Britpop and Indie. Many of punk’s leading lights - from McLaren and Westwood to Boy George, Adam Ant, Kevin Rowlands, Julie Burchill, Tony Parsons and Sting – then went on to dominate the 80s and 90s … and 40 years later we have still have punk attitudes and punk fashion and cyber-punk and punk ale and punk films and even golf punk.
But why? What made that movement so creative and dynamic? And so influential? That’s what is to be discussed in Anarchy In Fashion; how a gang of ‘isolated non-conformists’ took the music and fashion world by storm, created the biggest mass art movement since Dada and – for a time – changed everything. Why did that happen then…and are there any lessons for today?
TUESDAY 9th February:
