Fashion Fabrics by the Yard

Why would anyone want to buy fabric by the yard?  Well, if you don’t need an entire roll, it is much better to buy it by the yard.  When fabric is produced it is generally made in a significant quantity at a time.  That fabric is then rolled to form a bolt of fabric.  Note: sample yardage can be produced in smaller amounts but typical production it is best to produce more fabric at one time for economies of scale (more fabric produced the better efficiency and cost).

Keep in mind, just because you are purchasing by the yard, it does not mean you have to buy only one yard at a time.  This is simply a way to measure the amount of fabric that you need and charge you accordingly.  If for example, you need 3 ½ yards of jersey knit to experiment on making a t-shirt, you would have to purchase 4 yards of fabric.  Yes, you will be left with an additional half yard wasted, but that is the way the cookie crumbles.  When fabric is sold by the yard, you would have to purchase in yard increments.

Here are a few resources to consider when purchasing fabric by the yard for your clothing or accessory projects.

Fabric Mart: Fabric Mart claims you won’t find better deals.  Find Fashion Fabric, Designer Quality, Cheap Fabric Prices.

FabricGuru.com:  The first thing you need to know about them is that they love fabric.  They are not kidding when they say that.  Like many of their customers, they consider ourselves "fabriholics".  So they understand what customers are looking for in a fabric supplier, and they have worked very hard to make FabricGuru.com the internet's leading fabric resource, and a place you will want to shop for all of your fabric needs.  They offer fabric sold by the yard.  Price listed per yard.  Samples are available for $1.00 each shipping included.  Samples ship via US Postal Service.

Jo‑Ann Stores: Shop fabric online by the yard. Jo-Ann's has the largest selection of fabric in unique prints and materials.  Find fabrics for quilting, upholstering, decorating and apparel.

Mood Fabric by the Yard: NYC resources for the garment industry.  New York has several suppliers of textiles for the apparel industry.  Find other fabric stores in New York.  Many of them sell fashion fabrics by the yard.

In addition to the above mentions resources you should also keep in mind large companies such as Walmart and Ebay.  As a matter of fact, you can probably also find solutions on Amazon.  Walmart Fabric by the Yard: yes, Walmart sells fabric by the yard.   Ebay Fabric by the Yard: even auction companies such as Ebay sells apparel fabrics by the yard.

You may also want to search for fabric wholesalers or textile jobbers for additional options.

What is a bolt of fabric?

A bolt is a unit of measurement used as an industry standard for a variety of materials from wood to canvas, typically materials stored in a roll. The length is usually either 40 or 100 yards, but varies depending on the fabric being referred to, for example, a bolt of canvas is traditionally 39 yards.  You really would need to consult with the fabric mill regarding the yardage on the bolt before you make your purchase.  You should also check on the width of the fabric.  Some fabric is made more narrow than other fabrics.  The width of the fabric will affect your fabric utilization if you are planning to produce clothes based on a specific pattern.  Learn more about bolts of fabric.
