Reflective Thread from Coats

Apparel manufacturing tip to offer more safety to clothing:

Coats Group plc, the world’s leading industrial thread and consumer textile crafts business, is launching Coats Signal thread, an innovative reflective thread.  The specially developed premium thread has a high level of retro-reflectance when illuminated in dark or low visibility conditions.  The new thread will be showcased on the Coats stand (hall 5.1, stand B30), at Texprocess, the international fair for the processing of textile and other apparel materials, held in Frankfurt, Germany, 4-7 May.

Coats Signal thread is silver and designed primarily for fashion applications.  It can be used as an embroidery thread to differentiate products by creating decorative reflective features in logos, stitching patterns and seams.  While it is mainly decorative, when sewn on outdoor and active wear it also helps enhance visibility at night time or in difficult weather conditions.  Coats Signal thread combines the tenacity of a polyester filament cover with a retro-reflective core and has excellent strength and durability. 

Rajiv Sharma, Global CEO, Industrial, Coats Group plc, said: ‘At Coats, we understand the production challenges apparel manufacturers can face when using innovative new types of thread.  Using that knowledge we have created a unique thread which can withstand the rigours of the sewing process and still retain its reflective functionality in the end product.

Coats Signal thread has a special lubricated finish to protect it from needle heat and ensure smooth sewing so it retains its reflectivity after the intense sewing process during apparel production.  When used in the top cover of flatseams, the combination of an intricate stitch formation and reflective property of the thread gives an eye-catching appearance to the seam which also adds a premium look to the product.

Coats is Diamond Sponsor of the Innovative Apparel Show, a new event at Texprocess.  Four German colleges of fashion and design will present their visionary designs for technical textiles created with modern processing technologies.  The event runs for 30 minutes and will take place a total of seven times, twice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and once on Thursday.

Real Story of Artisan Shoes

Telling the Real Story of Artisan Shoes is a documentary seeking funding via KickStarter. The documentary will profile Artisan shoe makers from Spain, Italy and Mexico. These regions use to have a thriving market with hundreds of factories. Today there are less than one hundred combined.

Scott Starbuck, founder of City Soles, an independently owned artisan footwear retailer that is coming up on their 20th year in business, seeks to create the documentary. Scott wants to shed light on why Artisan shoes cost what they cost in comparison to cheaper shoe lines, and seeks to change consumer-buying patterns from disposable purchases to lifelong purchases.

The KickStarter campaign launched April 21, 2015 and has already raised $5,900 towards the $30,000 goal. The documentary will tell the story of artisan shoemakers from around the world including the conflicts they face in a fast fashion world. 

City Soles offers backers exclusive and unique offerings for supporting the documentary. 

· Ever want to create your own shoe line? A $5,000 pledge will give you access to work with Italian manufacturers and have the finished product sold at CitySoles.

· A $2,500 pledge will give you two pairs of custom, handmade Italian shoes from a designer featured in the documentary along with a hand signed certificate of authenticity from the designer.

Google Fashion Trend Reports

Google Fashion Trend Reports for Spring 2015

As you are most likely already aware, Apparel Search provides our viewers access to various fashion trend reports.  We write our own case studies, and we also often help our readers locate research materials provided by alternate resources.  Today we discovered an new resource that we thought was compelling enough to share with you.   This morning we learned that Google (yes, the giant search engine) is now dipping their toes into the fashion trend spotting arena.  They have recently published a Spring 2015 fashion trend report on their Think with Google website.  Although we are not expecting them to become a full-fledged “fashion company”, they are clearing taking steps to move into this vertical.

What is Google’s plan to help the fashion minded?

By categorizing past apparel-related queries based on similar search-demand patterns, Google was able to distinguish between the trends to watch and the trends to possibly forget.  And by looking at geographic data along with co-search behavior (such as words and phrases being searched alongside a particular fashion), they can get consumer insights into fashions that will most likely be hot this season.  According to the search result research, below are three up-and-coming fashion trends for spring 2015.

Have these silhouettes been on your fashion radar?  If not, you may want to start paying attention.

It is hard to say if search engines and algorithms will do a better job than stylists, wardrobe consultants, and fashionistas at spotting trends.  I guess that only time will tell.  Next year, we can take a look back and see if tulle skirts, midi skirts, and jogger pants had truly been hot sellers in 2015. 

Let’s keep in mind Spring is already well underway.  I would be much more curious if they can “predict” what will be trendy in Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016, and beyond.  If Google can get “future” trends figured out, then I would be super impressed.  Until then, I believe human trend forecasting evaluation will outperform computer trend analysis.  However, I could be wrong.

Is Google attempting to put small boutique trend forecasting companies out of business or help them more easily identify trends?  In all honesty, I am not yet certain.  Possibly, in the future they will be selling data to trend forecasting companies.  Hopefully their goal is not to make sites like Apparel Search obsolete.  That would certainly be mean spirited.

Although Google may not have realized as early as Apparel Search, they obviously now fully grasp that fashion is the world’s most important industry.  They have now actually created a Think with Google Fashion section on their site.

Authentic Brands Buys Jones New York

Authentic Brands Group, LLC (ABG), owner of a global portfolio of iconic fashion, sports and lifestyle, celebrity, media and entertainment brands, announced yesterday the purchase of American fashion brand, Jones New York. The acquisition marks a new milestone in the company’s growth, propelling the ABG portfolio to more than $4.5 billion in retail sales.

Jones New York is an esteemed American brand renowned for its reputation of excellence in design, quality and style. With an active and loyal consumer following, today the brand drives close to $1B in retail sales across department stores in the US as well as key international markets including Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

As part of this important acquisition ABG announces the appointment of Mark Weber as Strategic Advisor whose immediate focus will be on the Jones New York brand.   Weber has a storied career having been both President and CEO of PVH Corp, and most recently, served an 8-year term as CEO of LVMH, Inc. (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy).

ABG’s initial focus for Jones New York will be the development of its strategic positioning, enhancing core values, and rebuilding the brand to its former prominence.

In January 2015, Jones New York, a portfolio company of private equity firm Sycamore Partners, announced that it was pursuing strategic alternatives for the Jones New York brand and, in conjunction with this action, is closing its retail locations and certain related business operations over the course of 2015.

Melody Eshani and Reebok Classic Collaboration

LA based designer Melody Eshani and Reebok Classic are back at it again with another collaboration, this time featuring the iconic Blacktop Pump and Ventilator sneaker models.

Each sneaker features the luxe python leather featured on the first Reebok Classic x Melody Ehsani collaboration - a unique texture that takes inspiration from a creature which embodies Melody’s definition of a Classic woman. The shoes also feature the designer’s signature take on the Evil Eye, which brings a sense of individuality and creativity to the look. The clean gum outsole adds a fresh finish to the shoe’s rich tones. 

The Blacktop Pump is updated with a hidden interior heel wedge for a feminine, streamlined silhouette, while the Ventilator says true to its retro runner design. 

These shoes will be exclusively available at Melody’s LA store (424 1/2 N Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036, (323) 272-3934) and her website www.melodyehsani.com on April 24th.  The shoes will then be available at select global retailers and Reebok.com starting May 1st

The Reebok Classic partnership with LA based designer Melody Ehsani is back for SS15, dropping a standout sneaker pack to accompany the debut apparel collection launched earlier this year. Two much-loved classic silhouettes, the Ventilator runner and high-top Blacktop Pump, are reworked in the distinctive style that has become characteristic of Melody’s previous collaborations with the brand, for an eye-catching duo big on both style and substance.
Originally running and basketball silhouettes, the Ventilator and Blacktop Pump are given a bold makeover as Melody re-interprets the designs in her edgy street style, creating fashionable footwear for strong, independent women whose actions, attire and attitude speak louder than words.
Each sneaker features the original luxe python leather from the first Reebok Classic x Melody Ehsani collection, a unique texture that takes inspiration from a creature which embodies Melody’s definition of a Classic woman; a sweet juxtaposition of beauty and intelligence. A lacelock accessory featuring the designer’s signature take on the evil eye brings a sense of individuality and creativity to the look, while a gum outsole adds visual interest and a fresh finish to the upper’s rich tones. The Blacktop Pump is updated with a hidden interior wedge heel for a more feminine, streamlined silhouette, while the Ventilator stays true to its retro runner design to coincide with the sneaker’s 25th anniversary this year.
The second drop of the Reebok Classic x Melody Ehsani SS15 collection launches exclusively at Melody’s L.A store and on her website www.melodyehsani.com on April 24th, followed by select global retailers on May 1st. The collection ranges from $120-$200.

“Born and raised in Los Angeles in a traditional Persian family, like many of my cousins and friends I applied to go off to Law School after college, but I couldn’t stay there. I decided to break with my culture and follow my heart into a field I was internally drawn to….design.
