Oxford Industries Selling Ben Sherman

 Apparel company Oxford Industries Inc. says it will pursue the sale of its Ben Sherman business, which has had a weaker performance than the company's Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer brands in recent quarters.

Reported on March 26, 2015: Ben Sherman In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, net sales were $25.4 million compared to $20.1 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013 with increases in all channels of distribution. Operating results improved, with a $0.9 million operating loss in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014 compared to an operating loss of $2.6 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013. This improvement was primarily due to higher net sales partially offset by the impact of higher markdowns on off-season inventory.

In fiscal 2014, net sales for Ben Sherman increased to $77.5 million compared to $67.2 million in fiscal 2013 with increases in all channels of distribution and a $2.2 million favorable impact of foreign currency translation. The loss from operations decreased to $10.8 million in fiscal 2014 from a loss of $13.1 million in fiscal 2013 primarily due to higher net sales despite a $0.6 million negative impact of foreign currency translation.

The Company on March 26, 2015 announced that its Board of Directors has authorized the Company's management to pursue a sale of the Ben Sherman business. The Company has engaged Financo, Ltd. as its financial advisor to assist the Company in the process.

The Company expects to complete the sale of Ben Sherman during fiscal 2015.

Historical Reference:

In mid-2004, Oxford Industries Inc. of Atlanta purchased the Ben Sherman brand for 80 million British pounds (then $146 million) from 3i and Irish venture capital company Enterprise Equity.

Best Way to Find Clothing Stores

Shopping for clothing is fun, and it is also rather easy.  Thank you internet.

So, what do you think is the best way to find clothing stores.  If you don’t already have a particular retailer in mind, how do you typically begin your search.  Are you like most people and use the big search engines like Google & Bing?  Or do you have a special tip to share with us?

Here are a few of my favorite places to look for new boutiques (yes, I am bias and prefer these because they are on Apparel Search).

Clothing Stores – this is our primary fashion retail store section.  The directory consists of department stores, outlet centers, online retailers, and speciality boutiques.  If you know any amazing companies that should be added to the directory, suggest to them to contact us.  We are happy to add new resources.

Consumer Fashion – this is a rather new section on Apparel Search.  This entire section has specifically been designed for people interested in shopping for clothes, shoes, handbags, or accessories.  The area is not yet perfect, but it is off to a good start.  If you can think of ways that we can improve this particular area of the site, please do not hesitate to let us know.  While you are reviewing this area of the site, you may want to check the top shopping destination page to find clothing stores that may be of interest to you.

Because we are fans of the East Coast of the United States, we also must recommend that you investigate shopping for fashion in New York.  If you live in a different part of the country or the world, please let us know your favorite shopping destinations for purchasing clothing.

Apparel Business Draws in Fashionistas

Why does everyone want to join the fashion industry?  Just because you are a fashionista it does not necessarily mean you are ready.  Seriously, you may actually not be ready…

We can’t even begin to tell you how many people wish to create an apparel business.  The number is almost mind boggling.  If someone told me that 70% of the world’s population wanted to start an apparel business, I would “almost” believe them.  OK, seventy percent is an unrealistically high percentage.  However, you get the point, and the number must be pretty high.   

What is the reason for this phenomenon? 

In the opinion of Apparel Search, the desire to become a fashion designer is similar to the concept behind why people want to start a restaurant.  Despite the fact that the majority of restaurants fail, there appears to be an endless supply of wanna be chef’s lining up to open new dining establishments.  Sure this is great because clothing manufacturers have the opportunity to manufacture chefs clothing, but why do all of these people think they can be a successful restaurateur.  The reason is that they love cooking and they believe that the meals that they prepare are enjoyed by all.  The problem is that cooking for your family is “way” different than managing an actual business.  Food preparation is only a small part of the business.  In regard to fashion, it is a very similar dilemma.  People are confused that their love for clothes, footwear, and style means that they are qualified to manage an apparel business.  This is simply not the case.

Having an eye for fashion and a fantastic sense of style, most certainly does not mean that you understand customs clearance documents, inventory management, and quality testing procedures.  It is critical to understand that the science of garment design, manufacturing, and distribution is more complicated than the average person would consider.

As with any business, when looking from the outside, everything often looks very easy.  The reality is that this is often not the case.

Before you decide that you want to become an emerging fashion designer and take a shot at the catwalk, take your time to learn about the fashion industry by attending a school specializing in garments & textiles.  If you think you are ready, you can further investigate explore a career in fashion.

Are you interested in becoming an emerging designer on the road to fame and fortune.  Do you want to work in the apparel business in another capacity?  If yes, most definitely give it a try.  However, before you blindly jump in, make sure to study the apparel industry first.

Explore a Career in the Fashion Industry

If you enjoy fashion as much as we think you do, it may be a good idea for you to investigate opportunities to work in the apparel industry.  OK, it is understood that it is very possible that you already work in our fabulous industry.  So, I better break this post up into two distinct parts.   Section one, for those new to the industry.  Section two, for those of you that are already entrenched.

New to the Fashion Industry

1. Step one is to learn about the fashion industry.  Obviously, you will need to know what you are potentially getting yourself into.
2. Step two, attend a college or university to further educate yourself in regard to a specific aspect of business.  Or get a well-balanced but “industry specific” education at a school that specializes in fashion or textiles.
3. Step three, prepare a resume.
4. Step four, do all of the following:

• Attend a job fair.
• Meet with an employment agency.
• Research job opportunities online.

Here is one more important tip, which is not technically a step that I official recommend, but it may be helpful.  Make a mental decision regarding your thoughts on internships. It is debatable if they are a good idea or not.  You will need to know if you are willing to take an internship to get your foot in the door or if you want to be patient and go for full employment from the start.

Experienced Fashion Industry Professional

If you are not new to the business, you probably already know most of the ins and outs required to be successful.  However, it is important to remind yourself on occasion that it is always a good time to discover new opportunities.  For those of us that do not own our own business, staying in one position for too long will cause you to stagnate.  Yes, it is true.  Your mind, your inspiration, and your opportunities for advancement may become set to simmer if you stay with one company for too long.  With that said, this is obviously NOT always the case.  Sometimes, the longer you stay at a company the better off your career.  My suggestion to move job hop every few years is a generality (good for many people, but not all people).  You will need to review your own career path to make a proper determination.

As per our understanding, Zeroville is in post production.  We can't wait until it hits theaters.  In the fall of 2014 the motion picture adaptation of Zeroville began filming starring James Franco, Will Ferrell, Seth Rogen, Jacki Weaver and Megan Fox for release in late 2015.  Zeroville is a 2007 novel by Steve Erickson on film's upheaval in the 1970s.  Zeroville discusses the supernatural power of films over people and how films become like gods in our worship of them.

On Saturday March 14th and Sunday March 15th, A-List Communications’ Supper Suite by STK and its sponsor partners, STK Restaurants operated by lifestyle hospitality company The ONE Group, Maestro Dobel® Tequila, and Blue Moon Brewing Company celebrated Jamie Babbit’s FRESNO (world premiere), and three films from Duplass Brothers Productions: Hannah Fidell’s 6 YEARS (world premiere), J. Davis’ MANSON FAMILY VACATION (world premiere) and Ross Katz’s ADULT BEGINNERS (U.S. premiere).

Great fun was had by all at the parties, and guests sipped on Maestro Dobel® Tequila specialty cocktails including its signature “Black Diamond Margarita” and “Dobel Agave Julep,” as well as official SXSW sponsor, Miller-Coors Brewing which featured beer pairings across its Blue Moon Brewing beers.

Guests at the FRESNO reception snacked on cucumber and couscous tabouli with feta, mint, and paprika oil; Tuna Tartare with avocado, taro chip, chili oil and micro cilantro, and seared NY steak with crème fraîche, chive potato and smoked roe butter. All expertly prepared by Executive Chefs Robert Liberato from STK LA and Mark Alba from STK Atlanta.
