Fjällräven Down Experts

Are you down for learning how to stay warm and stylish this winter?

Ever since Fjällräven was founded just over 50 years ago, they have had one strong driving force: to develop products that make it easier for people to enjoy the countryside.  Part of this commitment is dedication to helping explorers of the outdoors stay warm in the winter.

Do you have a good quality down jacket at home?  If you live in a region that gets cold, you really should.

When it comes to insulating qualities, nothing can outclass down as padding. Down offers unbeatable heat in relation to its weight and is fluffy, comfortable and easy to compress. Down is therefore the obvious choice for expeditions or treks in extremely cold temperatures and at high altitudes. It is also the best option on really cold days for activities that are more sedentary, such as ice fishing or dog sledding.

Fjällräven Expedition Down Jacket
Fjällräven Expedition Down Jacket
As far back as 1950 Åke Nordin developed a backpack frame that sowed the seed which would go on to become the Fjällräven company. And ever since its Örnsköldsvik beginnings in 1960, Fjällräven has continued to produce innovative, functional products which are appreciated by generations of outdoor enthusiasts across the world – and which have also received a number of distinguished awards over the years.  Fjällräven has been working with down insulation for more than 40 years and they exclusively use down of the highest quality. When experienced adventurers told their founder, Åke Nordin, that their warm garments did not keep them warm enough, he made a decision.  No one should ever again have to freeze while out in nature.  This decision resulted in the launch in 1974 of the now classic Expedition Down Jacket, and since then their down jackets have become greatly appreciated across the world.

Fjällräven’s products are currently sold in around 20 countries. Over time, a few have become more or less classics – the Greenland Jacket, Vidda Trousers, Kånken Backpack and Expedition Down Jacket. They work continuously on developing materials, solutions and designs for new favorites – clothing, tents, sleeping bags and other outdoor equipment that can be used, loved and worn over many years of adventures out in the fresh air.

Continued research and development leads to success:

Goldeck Textile Fjällräven’s new insulation material G-Loft Supreme which is manufactured in a factory located in a beautiful valley in the Carinthia region of southern Austria. The material has been created and developed specifically for Fjällräven by innovator and entrepreneur August Mayer of Goldeck Textil. With more than 30 years of experience in working with synthetic materials, he knows more about polyester fibres than most, and despite being 70 years of age he is still actively involved in the production process. He says himself that G-loft Supreme is the best material he has developed and for this reason Fjällräven has been careful to secure sole rights for the material until 2024. Keb Loft and Övik Loft are their first two G-loft products and they can be found in stores already in the autumn of 2014.  Learn more: www.fjallraven.com/guides/material-guides/g-loft-supreme

How do they know that they will keep you warm?

Down Promise, follow up/monitoring to ensure that only the highest quality down is used for Fjällräven’s products, each down batch is tested at the down supplier with oversight from their inspection team. Also they take a reference batch and send another reference-batch for cross-testing to the International Down and Feather Laboratory – the IDFL. Only if the test –results match, the down is released for further use. During the whole process their inspection team regularly visits the parent farms, the hatchery, the farms, the transporters and follow the transport to the slaughterhouse and inspect also the slaughtering process. No step is left out in their control flow.  Learn more at http://www.fjallraven.com/responsibility/nature-environment/animal-welfare/our-down-promise

Down jackets of the best quality

High down quality and smart constructions are just two of the reasons why this companies down jackets are so popular. One of the technical terms you may come into contact with is CUIN (sometimes also called fill power). This is a measurement that indicates how fluffy the down is. You may also hear the terms loft and insulation, which refer to the thickness of the layer of air created by the padding and, respectively, the warming properties of the insulation. The thicker the loft, the better the insulation. The loft is determined by the blend of down and feathers. For maximum insulation, you should choose a down jacket with a high CUIN and a good mix of down and feathers.

CUIN measures insulation

CUIN stands for cubic inches per once and indicates how much volume (cubic inches) is filled by one ounce (27.3 grams) of down.  For simplicity sake, we can say that the higher the CUIN value of a jacket, the better it insulates (assuming everything else equal).

Mix of down and feathers

Down binds more air than feathers and also offers better insulation. This means that the higher the percentage of down in a jacket, the better the insulation compared to a jacket of the same weight. If you see information such as “90/10”, this means that for every 100 grams of padding in your jacket, 90 grams are down.

More details that make a difference

The Fjällräven down jackets are not popular and warm just because of their high-class down and high down ratio; they have large, roomy hoods with a drawstring opening that leaves only the eyes visible when pulled tight in really cold weather. Many also have detachable synthetic fur trim for protection from the snow. Protective flaps at the zipper stop drafts and push buttons add extra security (you certainly do not want to have a broken zipper when you are in severe cold situations).  The flaps also offer flexibility, by closing the jacket using only the buttons, moisture and heat can be released.

Most of their jackets often add extra hand-warming pockets behind the regular pockets and the shoulders are filled with extra padding to ensure that they maintain their warmth and shape even when carrying a backpack or heavy items in the pockets.

If you want to know Apparel Search’s opinion, it is that you should head to the store to buy a Fjällräven down coat as soon as possible.  They are stylish and apparently nice and toasty.

We hope that learn about this apparel company and the information that they offer regarding down and feather has been of help to you.  If you have comments about this subject, you are welcome to add your thoughts in the comment area below.

Limited Edition Rare Vicuña Sweater

luxurious vicuña sweater
Art Imig’s of Kohler announces a limited edition sweater knit of Vicuña, which is among the world’s most expensive yarn. St. Croix Collections is showcasing the luxurious vicuña sweaters at select retailers throughout the United States and Art Imig’s of Kohler is among the very few to offer this rare garment by special order for the Fall 2014 season. Only 100 of the sweaters will be available in the United States (valued at $3,500), along with 100 vicuña scarves, (valued at $1,750).

“We are honored to share the legacy of this valuable fiber with our community,” states Jake Toman, owner of Art Imig’s of Kohler. “It is rare opportunity to present these prized knits, and we’re proud to present them on behalf of St. Croix Collections at Art Imig’s.”

Vicuña yarn is among the softest and rarest in the world, and is spun from select fiber collected every other year from the Peruvian cousin of the alpaca. The animals only live at altitudes above 13,000 feet high in the steppes of the Andes Mountains in small herds carefully managed by native tribes. It is only in the last decades that the vicuña has been rescued from extinction through concerted efforts of the Peruvian government and the Andean people. Eighty percent of the world’s vicuña populations live in Peru within large nature preserves, where the strictest regulations are applied for its protection and where the Andean communities take great care of the free-roaming herds.

The fleece — called the Magic Golden Fleece of Peru — is gathered in a celebration ritual of the Chaccu, a centuries-old ceremony of serenely surrounding, capturing and shearing the vicuñas, then setting them free. A single vicuña produces only a pound of fleece every year. The coarse guard hair that grows naturally among the soft fur is removed by hand in an ancient technique, and the delicate fibers are then hand washed and air-dried to preserve the extraordinary qualities of the soft fiber. Sophisticated technologies are utilized to spin the fiber into a delicate yarn of optimum characteristics, which is knit to produce lightweight garments of indescribable plushness and warmth. The fiber is left in its natural golden-tan color, as it is sensitive to chemical dye processing. Vicuña fiber is considerably finer than even the highest grade Mongolian cashmere.

Every vicuña sweater and scarf is numbered and registered with the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture, complete with a certificate of authenticity, and is only available through Store Name and St. Croix Collections. Each arrives gift-boxed in an elegant wooden case accompanied by a book detailing the picturesque land and the legend of the vicuña.

For over 50 years, Knitcraft Corporation — maker of the exclusive St. Croix Collections — has been recognized for the highest quality men’s knitwear and outerwear in the world. St. Croix produces the world’s finest sweaters, knits and jackets in Winona, Minnesota, using the highest quality raw materials from around the globe. A fully coordinated line of fine sport shirts, premium denim jeans, casual pants, lightweight lambskin leathers and hosiery crafted by Europe’s leading manufacturers complements the knitwear collection. All St. Croix apparel is produced in limited quantities of each design to ensure exclusivity.

Dior and I Fashion Documentary

Film & TV distributor The Orchard has acquired all rights in the U.S. and Canada to director Frédéric Tcheng’s fashion documentary Dior and I, which premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival to outstanding praise. This marks the third fashion film for Tcheng, who previously co-wrote and co-directed Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel and co-produced Valentino: The Last Emperor. The documentary captures the entire process behind Raf Simons debut couture collection in his new position as Creative Director of Christian Dior Couture.

"I am extremely excited to be working with the Orchard on bringing the film to its North American audience," said director Frédéric Tcheng. “They clearly have a passion for and understanding of the film that will translate to a successful roll-out.”

Fashion documentary Dior and I

In 2012, legendary French fashion house, Christian Dior Couture, announced designer Raf Simons as its head Creative Director.  Dior and I pays homage to the work of the talented Dior atelier and takes a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the makings of Simons’ debut haute couture collection and how it returned to the origins of the house of Dior.

The film takes an intimate, vérité-style glimpse at the inner workings of the Dior atelier, capturing the entire eight-week process up until the premiere of Simons’ collection. This includes the little-seen atelier workers – the heart and soul of the fashion industry – some of whom have sewed for Dior for decades and do so with an unbridled passion. Together, they form a support system for Simons and help to create his masterpiece collection, with every line they sketch and bead they sew.

A whirlwind of creativity, stress, determination and triumph, the movie boasts mass and niche appeal.

Dior and I is a visually and emotionally stunning film about an oft unseen part of the process in the world of high fashion,” said The Orchard’s SVP of Film & TV, Paul Davidson. “Frédéric Tcheng has crafted a documentary that, much like the elegant creations in the world of Dior, deserves to be seen."

The film is slated for a 2015 theatrical release in the US and Canada. The deal was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo of The Orchard and Josh Braun of Submarine.

Inside the cuff there is a velcro-like material that grabs the fiber of your leggings to attach the cuff securely. Poof! Instantly your leggings are no longer plain.  The cuffs are made out of a cotton lycra fabric (or spandex in some cases) which allows for them to stretch and keep your leggings comfy as always.

The Gone Girl Haircut

Rosamund Pike’s performance in Gone Girl needed a haircut to perfectly complement the plot. Don’t worry – no spoilers here – however, the woman behind Rosamund’s striking cut, Sassoon Senior Creative Director, Tina Haukjaer Andersen discusses how to get it and why anyone – including you! – can wear this soon-to-be, iconic look.

“The Gone Girl haircut is classic Sassoon technique with a modern spin,” explains Tina. “All textures can wear this cut – curly, fine, thick, wavy - as long as the cut is tailored and personalized.”

To get this haircut, you first need to have an honest conversation with your hairstylist about your texture and how much time you’re willing to spend on your hair.
  • If you have curls and spend 15 minutes getting ready in the morning, then you can wear this cut naturally. A knowledgeable hairstylist can cut angles that enhance the texture and create a more expanded version of this look.
  • Or, if you tend to invest more time into your hair and like a polished, sleek version, this cut can be styled with a blow-dryer and touched-up with a flat iron for any occasion.
It’s also important to tell your hairdresser the features that you want to highlight.
  • Like to play up your eyes? A fringe is a perfect add-on to this haircut.
  • Love to accentuate your profile? This cut works well tucked behind the ears.
  • Want to highlight your cheekbones? Layers can add variation to this look.
As Tina noted, “The director [David Fincher] requested a seductive bob, so I decided to accentuate Rosamund’s elegant neckline and jawline by keeping the bob short.”

Last, you must select a hair stylist who has the education to cut this look.

“Naturally, I recommend you visit a stylist at a Sassoon Salon or Sassoon Academy location since we all had to master this specific cut to join the Sassoon team,” Tina explains. “However, we train over 180,000 hairdressers a year at Sassoon Academy. Ask your stylist if he or she has taken a Sassoon course, and if the answer is yes, then you’re in good hands. All Sassoon courses cover the methodology behind this cut.”
