Clinique & TED Global Initiative to Encourage Women

Clinique is partnering with TED to launch a global search to bring the next smart idea to life, linked to the brand’s Smart Serum franchise.  Now, anyone who has ever aspired to be the next Sara Blakely, Sheryl Sandberg or Amy Cuddy – or even just had a lightbulb idea moment at their kitchen table – will have the chance to get their idea in front of some of the brightest minds in the country, and the world. 

TED & Clinique will announce a call to action for women everywhere to submit their ideas at Clinique.com through August 31st 2015.

This partnership and campaign are part of a movement to engage and encourage women all over the world to share their intelligence, ambition and creativity.  The most compelling idea will receive funding to help make it a reality.

The winner will be invited as a special guest to the Smart Women series at the TEDWomen conference in 2016, a rare opportunity to be profiled among and network with esteemed TED community members to propel her idea further through connections with like-minded women.

3D Visualization Technology Option for AccuMark 10

Gerber Technology, a world leader in integrated solutions for the apparel and industrial markets, announces the availability of 3D visualization technology as an optional module for AccuMark® 10, its industry leading integrated pattern design, grading, planning and marker making software.

According to Mary McFadden, director of CAD product management with Gerber Technology, 3D technology is a visualization tool that assists all along the design and development process. “It will help the pattern maker to know whether the pattern works in the design, the designer to refine the details of the creation, and to visualize the fit and comfort of the garment on the model, all without actually making the garment,” she said. “This technology can assist all the way through to merchandising, where it can be used in e-commerce.”

Gerber’s 3D solution is leveraging sophisticated 3D graphics and animation technology called Blender.  

Blender is a professional free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. Blender's features include 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, raster graphics editing, rigging and skinning, fluid and smoke simulation, particle simulation, soft body simulation, sculpting, animating, match moving, camera tracking, rendering, video editing and compositing. Alongside the modeling features it also has an integrated game engine.  The Dutch animation studio Neo Geo and Not a Number Technologies (NaN) developed Blender as an in-house application, with the primary author being Ton Roosendaal. The name Blender was inspired by a song by Yello, from the album Baby.

The technology has been used widely in the animation, movie, video game and simulation industries.  Its broad spectrum of modeling, texturing, lighting and simulation capabilities make it one of the most popular Open Source 3D graphics applications in the world. “Blender is an extremely robust simulation engine which allows us to get a realistic visualization of fit and movement of a garment. Our internal development team and the large global community of developers working with Blender give us a tremendous edge advancing the use of 3D,” McFadden said.

As we all know, the laundry cleaning task is one of the most tedious and time-consuming tasks that no one wants to do. Do not place heavy fabric clothes on the lighter ones as it will crush them resulting into more deep wrinkles. In order to save your time and to avoid ironing your clothes, it is advisable to take few minutes to fold the clothes correctly as soon as the clothes come out of the dryer. If you just leave the heap of clothes in the basket, the weight of the pile would ultimately result into causing the wrinkles to set in more deeply.

Pay attention with your dryer cycle: Generally, all dryers work the same way and so they use gas or electric energy source to dry the clothes. As a result, the dryers vent the moisture and draw it from the fabric and this difference in heating and cooling down cycles determines that whether the clothes will come out with deep wrinkles or wrinkle free. As a result, it is advisable to pay attention with the drying cycle and prevent them from losing more moisture from the clothes.

In case, if the clothes are getting slightly wrinkled after storing them, you can steam out the wrinkles by running a hot shower on them and then letting the clothes steam for a while. Thus, these were some of the best tips to prevent your clothes from getting wrinkled.

Ten years ago BESTIVAL challenged its audience to attempt a world record for the biggest ever dressing up party and, with the help of a willing crowd of super-creative party loving people, they  changed the face of festival culture forever, sparking a huge UK-wide renaissance in what they call fancy dress.  Over the years BESTIVAL’s themes have become world renowned, never failing to fire up the crowd’s imagination. From Pirates to Outer Space and HMS Bestival to the Desert Island Disco, rallying 55,000 fashionistas in the art of dressing up, they are the catalyst for incredible audience creativity, and a weekend of un-self-conscious joy, forging a shared experience that is truly unique to the event. For our first-ever foray abroad we thought we’d give Canadian Bestivalites free rein to get those creative juices flowing. The reason we wanted to come to Toronto in the first place is because we know how original and inventive you are; it’s open house on fancy dress, so show us what you’ve got!

But be prepared because it’s not just BESTIVAL-goers who push the boat out, the performers love a bit of a costume party, too. Off-Aisle by Kohl’s

Kohl’s will test a new store format offering deep discounts on returned merchandise.

The retailer has leased a 30,000-square-foot space in a suburban strip mall in New Jersey that will open early next month as Off-Aisle by Kohl’s.  More specifically the new store will be situated on a high-traffic street in Cherry Hill, NJ.  For those of you that are not too familiar with New Jersey, Cherry Hill is not too far from Philadelphia.  

In the beginning, the plan is to fill the shelves will be “like-new” clothing, accessories and home goods returned to Kohl’s department stores or Kohls.com.  Who knows, maybe they will add slow moving merchandise from the other stores into the mix in the future.

The firm applied last month for a trademark on the phrase “Off Aisle by Kohl’s.”

We are not certain, but we have heard rumor that discounts may run as high as 70% to 90% off original retail store pricing.   All sales will be final, with no returns or exchanges allowed.

SEAMS Committee Participation in Government Contracts

EAMS, the National Association for the U.S. Sewn Products Industry, announces the formation of a new SEAMS Government Committee designed to inform and support its membership on doing business with federal, state and local governments. Launched earlier this year, the committee is chaired by Geoff Senko of MMI Textiles Inc., a supplier of specialty textiles and related components to the private and public sectors. Other founding committee leaders includes Jack Foster of Sterlingwear of Boston, Jeff Papalia of the National Industries for the Blind, Mary Reardon of Tweave LLC and Gary Whited of SourceAmerica.

MountKarma Crowdfund for Nepal

On April 25th a massive earthquake struck Nepal devastating its people and culture.  With over 8,000 deaths, half a million displaced individuals and countless world heritage sites decimated Nepal needs support.

Kevin Lanuk is the founder of Mountkarma, a Himalayan fashion start-up based in Kathmandu, Nepal.  They are running a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the purchase of aid materials for the earthquake victims of Nepal.  Specifically, they are focused on bringing aid to villages in the Nuwakot district, one of the areas hardest hit.  One village they assessed named Simle needs roof’s for 12 homes to hold back water from the impending monsoon and rice to feed the village.  The cost as of today;  a single 30kg sack of rice is 1350nrp or $13.28 and the cost of tin roofs for 12 houses is 58000nrp or $570.74.

They have a unique platform as a Himalayan clothing brand to raise support through awareness.
