Will Formal Wear Ever Take a Backseat?

You could argue that over the last 150 years, our everyday style has become more casual. But despite this development, there are still plenty of occasions when women put on their best dress and men are expected to ‘suit up’. This can be for a big social event such as a wedding, but many people are also expected to wear formal clothing at the workplace. So, will formal wear ever really take a backseat?
Professional environment: One of the most common settings in which we have to dress formally is at the workplace. As a general rule of thumb, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Your clothing style is often one of the first things people will notice about you. At the workplace, you can use this to your advantage, as you might be able to get noticed for the right reasons. Make sure that you pick a presentable, professional attire that exudes confidence. That way you cannot only make a better impression on your co-workers, you’ll also be able to boost your clients’ confidence in you and your business.

If you’re going to a job interview, then formal attire will earn you respect and credibility. Even if the company advertises a casual dress code, you should always make an effort for your interview as it shows that you respect the company and the person interviewing you.

Weddings: You’ll also need to have formal wear in your wardrobe for weddings. Remember that you can never be overdressed for a wedding. Ladies make a great choice when putting on a formal dress or skirt to these occasions and men can never go wrong with wedding suits from Dobell.

Even if the other guests have chosen a more laid-back style, you’ll still be able to blend in. The best thing to do to avoid any confusion is to simply ask your hosts how formal or informal the wedding will be and if there’ll be a dress code. You can then make a well-informed clothing choice and avoid a potentially embarrassing faux pas. But if in doubt, always go for the elegant dress or the tailored suit.

Even though most people enjoy wearing a casual clothing style in their free time, formal wear is still a very important part of our society and a symbol of respect. Wearing formal attire can also change the way we think about ourselves; it can make us feel more professional and more powerful. So, it looks as if formal wear is here to stay.

Pre-Black Friday 2015

Shopping season 2015 is now officially upon us.  Black Friday is a few days away but the "pre-Black Friday" sales have already begun.  Get your shopping list and your credit cards ready.

If you are looking for the two most sharply priced competitors, we suggest you review both Walmart & Amazon.  These two behemoth sized retailers are competing strongly for your holiday shopping dollars.  You may as well take advantage of their battle to offer consumers the lowest possible prices.

Walmart is ready for you with their pre-Black Friday sales.  And yes, they do sell clothing.

The other top shopping destination for pre-Black Friday clothing sales would be Amazon.  You can find tons of Fashion at Amazon.

In addition to these two clothing retailers we have plenty of other resources to choose from to obtain clothes on sale.  In fact, many of the leading luxury shopping destination, department stores, and specialty shops around the country are having discounted pricing starting already.

What ever you decide for your holiday gift giving this year, please focus on fashion not electronics.

Don't forget to visit other clothing stores for your holiday shopping.  Sure Walmart & Amazon have great deals, but so do many of the other retailers.
If you act quickly, you can take advantage of 40% Off your order at Levi if you spend $100+ but the code we have expires tomorrow (and it is online only).  If you are interested, you can shop Levi online with code: BEGIFTED (check their site for details end the expiration).  Don't worry, if the pre-sale expires, you can always check their site to see if they have more holiday sales.

Here are some other stores that we recommend.

Lord & Taylor

Neiman Marcus

Enjoy your shopping.

If you work in the apparel industry, don't forget to check out the Black Friday Retail Sales Report after the holidays are over.  It is a good way to research what sales activity has taken place this year.

The Twitten Fair-Trade Knitwear for Holiday 2015

Happy Thanksgiving week to all!  If hand-made, fair-trade knitwear with a sense of humor is your thing for Holiday/Winter 2015/16, we think we've got just the ticket: The Twitten.
Twitten Mitten
Six winters ago, “Twitten” debuted as a “fun-of-a-kind” solution to bring romance, affection AND warmth to couples worldwide. Twitten® was the original solution to keeping warm while holding hands in the cold. And two seasons back, it caused a sensation in a whimsical heart and hand-warming segment on ABC’s Good Morning America you can watch here:

Each year, Twitten debuts new and revives classic knitwear for singles, kids, couples and now, for baby. This season’s collection now includes premium hats, scarves, fingerless gloves, mittens, texting gloves, legwarmers and a fun new babies’ and kids’ line—all fair trade and hand-knit in 100% alpaca or alpaca blend in Peru. Available at boutiques nationwide and at www.thetwitten.com, Twitten features contemporary styles in bold stripes and subtle solids with knit accents and decorations, embroidery and appliques. Consciously designed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the entire Twitten line is sustainably crafted by small family-owned businesses and traditional women’s cooperatives high in the Peruvian Andes under the supervision of Twitten’s Artisan Initiative Program.

This season, Twitten invites you to fight “Frigophobia”—the fear of becoming too cold—with: mittens; gloves; texting gloves and mittens, fingerless gloves, scarves, hats, scarfhats and leg warmers. For the kids, Twitten’s got the season’s biggest thing: animal hoods with unicorns, fairies and enchanted hedgehogs. Twitten for baby accessories are arriving shortly, with a alpaca bouclé “baby bag” in cream/natural white among the first arrivals, followed by bonnets, dresses,

tops/bottoms and onesies. Co-Founder and Twittener-in-Chief Connie Kaiserman promises, “[they are] so soft, cozy and warm, and so much better than a blanket because they can’t get kicked off or rolled out of.” A premium product, the original Twitten retails at $44; kids’ mittens start at $15 and adult mittens are on sale at $25.20. Leg warmers are $29. A complete list of the season’s products, fabrics, colors and patterns—as well as real people wearing the accessories under real conditions is online at www.thetwitten.com.

Links to many photos of this season’s collection are here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6jw37w3v2n6ppne/AAB7MtIYkDIEDiQziiCfSCmua?dl=0

Where the heck did Twitten come from? It started as a unique two-handed (conjoined) mitten couples can wear while holding hands to stay snug and warm. Co-founder Connie Kaiserman knitted her first Twitten for boyfriend (and subsequent husband of many years!) Steve Robinson so they could hold hands during football games. Several decades and professions later, Kaiserman met Jennifer Isaacson, who had spent a lifetime sourcing materials all over the world and designing everything from textiles to furniture. Together they launched Twitten.

Twitten LLC is 100% women-owned and operated. The entire Twitten Line is Fair Trade and handcrafted in Peru by artisans whose work supports and sustains traditional communities. As Kaiserman says, “high in the Andes, women are knitting beautiful accessories for you.”
The Twitten donates 20% of all its profits to the Bodhi Fund, which was created to support underserved New Mexico families whose children are in desperate need of out-of-state cancer treatment. For more information visit www.nmcf.org/?page_id=1239

Entrepreneur and writer Kaiserman, who divides her time between Santa Fe, New York and Greece, says, “We’re tremendously gratified retailers and consumers alike have embraced our ‘Twitten Story.’ While we have made inroads into brick and mortar retail—we‘ve been especially popular in college towns and hip urban and suburban boutiques—we remain a “mom and mom” operation, and we have our own Artisan Initiative program.” In the program, Isaacson teaches young women in Chinchero, Peru how to knit to a high standard and sells the items in the US. Available in very limited quantities, these “Artisan Collection” products can also be made to order.

Twitten burst on the scene as a must-have gift after debuting at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Then, celebrity couples and singles of all stripes embraced the cute, captivating and curious accessory. Celebrities sporting Twitten products have included: George Stephanopoulos; Laura Spencer; Mariel Hemingway; Jesse Williams; Ricki Lake; Audrina Patridge; Ryan Cabrera; Chelsea Handler and Chuy; William Mapother; KayCee Stroh and husband Ben Higginson; Broderick Johnson and his wife “BooBoo;” Sally Kellerman; Candy Spelling; Alan Cumming; Olympic Silver Medalist Jared "Speedy" Peterson; and many others.

Kaiserman concludes, “Twitten represents a college student’s dream come true, and while the original Twitten is silly and fun, our full line is as practical as it is beautiful. We predict a lot more couples, singles, parents and kids are going to be ‘Twittening’ come this fall and winter!”

About THE BODHI FUND 20% of all profits from The Twitten go to the Bodhi Fund. In 2003 Connie and Steve’s four year-old grandson Bodhi was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Because bone marrow transplants are unavailable in the state of New Mexico where Bodhi lived, he and his family traveled to New York City where he underwent a bone marrow transplant at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Today Bodhi is an energetic and irrepressible 16 year-old enjoying life with his younger sister and brother. The Bodhi Fund was created to support New Mexico families whose children are in desperate need of out-of-state cancer treatment. Administered by the New Mexico Community Foundation, the Bodhi Fund provides financial aid to cover mortgage, phone, car, utility and travel expenses at a moment when families are plunged into crisis, both emotionally and financially. www.nmcf.org/?page_id=1239

JudeFrances Jewelry and Drukker Designs

Don't waste your time looking for amazing Black Friday prices.  You should spend your time, looking for fantastic gifts at any price.  If you are looking for something "special", Apparel Search suggests that you take a look at the JudeFrances Collection as well as the Drukker Designs collection.
JudeFrances jewelry
JudeFrances Lovely
JudeFrances Bracelets
Founder Jude Steele uses her unique style and design aesthetic to lead the JudeFrances design team in creating fresh, on trend styles that appeal to a variety of women. Driven by fashion and style, Steele has a knack for staying ahead of trends. This combined with her background as a photographer has given her a keen eye not only in leading the design team but creating new vision for the company as a whole.
Drukker Jewelry
Drukker Bridal Jewelry
It all started over twenty years ago in a firehouse garage in Moscow. A young electrophysicist and her firefighter husband ventured out to manufacture cubic zirconia, for which the process had just been recently invented in Russia. Over the next several years, their business was thriving and developing from manufacturing cubic zirconia and lab-grown garnets, and marketing those stones to full-scale jewelry manufacturers, to designing and manufacturing their own line of jewelry that was and still is trend-setting in Russia.

Elena Drukker and her artistic and engineering team create unique designs utilizing world-renowned classical jewelry-making techniques that go back to the time of Fabergé. Even though they use contemporary technology to its fullest in the manufacturing process, most of our jewelry designs are too intricate for us to consider computer-assisted designs or manufacturing.

Their jewelry is handcrafted, with each gemstone being individually prong-set by hand, which allows our jewelry to stand the test of time.

Pertex Abrasion-Resistant Fabric CS10 Technology

The concept of the fabric that became Pertex was an idea of Hamish Hamilton, who some 30 years ago discovered that moisture would move along the microscopic capillaries within a woven fabric, spreading over a larger surface where it quickly dried.

The Pertex brand was born and, with it, garments such as the Buffalo Double-P system that was the forerunner to what we now know as ‘soft-shell’.  Hamish claimed that the (Double-P) Pertex / pile system would protect against 1/2” / hr rain fall and up to 50 mph winds.

It was in the mid 1980’s that Rab Carrington began to use Pertex for the shell of his down clothing and sleeping bags, replacing the much heavier fabrics that were used at the time.  The world soon discovered that Pertex was not only lighter, but it dried more quickly, was softer, allowing the down to loft to its maximum and was comfortable against the skin.  It was these attributes that led Pertex to become the recognized leader in high performance fabric technology.

Fast forward to now, and Pertex is also making strides in regard to fabric that is abrasion-resistant.  Outdoor industry clothing brands will premiere a new CS10 technology from Pertex for Fall 2016.  Fabrics with CS10 technology are said to have more than twice the abrasion resistance of fabrics made with traditional circular filimant yarns.

Their heritage of staying true to their British roots for over thirty years has led them on a path of continuous innovation to deliver the best end-use focused fabrics in the business. It is because of this dedication to innovation and excellence that the Pertex brand is now partnered with the most prestigious brands in the outdoor industry.

Below are a few of the other fabric selections they market:

Based on the original Pertex fabric, Pertex Classic remains the benchmark for durable yet lightweight shell fabrics.  It provides excellent weather protection with a highly water repellent finish and windproof construction.

Pertex Microlight is well balanced, providing lightweight weather protection whilst remaining durable and abrasion resistant. Its softness allows down and synthetic insulation to fully loft.

Pertex Quantum uses incredibly fine yarns, precisely woven to provide a very lightweight yet strong and durable fabric. Its softness allows down and synthetic insulation to fully loft.

The degree by which a fabric is able to withstand loss of appearance through surface wear, rubbing, chafing, and other frictional actions.  You can visit the Pertex website to learn about which of their fabrics is helpful to clothing manufacturers in regard to abrasion-resistance.

Fashion Verse Electronics for Holiday Gift Giving

The Holidays are coming, and it is important to understand that the only "good gifts" would be the gift of fashion.  It is very critical to understand that no one really likes to receive electronics as a present.  They may pretend they like it, but they really would have preferred a Christmas sweater, shoes, gloves, etc. The gift of apparel, jewelry or beauty product simply makes the world a better place.  When thinking about holiday gift giving, make sure that you are thinking fashion

We strongly suggest that you trade in your old video games, outdated phones, cameras, laptops, and use the money to purchase new clothes, shoes, and fashion accessories.

Weak Fall 2015 Fashion Forecast

Has Fall been hard on apparel retailers.   Yes, I know it is still too early to judge how Fall/Winter 2015 will go down in the record books, but a warm fall can’t be a great sign for clothing stores.  With the warm weather, some people prefer outdoor activities and avoid the shopping centers.  Yes, I understand that a growing number of people shop online and don’t head out to the stores anyway.  Regardless, knowing that the weather has been warm, we are bit concerned regarding this seasons sales performance at retail.  Keep in mind the store inventory is now Fall/Winter, but consumers are not being driven by cold weather to shop for jackets, sweaters, etc.

Do you think that Fall/Winter 2015 will be successful for fashion retailers?

I would not necessarily place a bet on it, but my forecast is a weak fall this year for many fashion retailers.

Just in case you are curious about the changing seasons,  according to the Almanac, the seasons of 2015 change as follows:

SPRING EQUINOX March 20, 2015 6:45 P.M. EDT
SUMMER SOLSTICE June 21, 2015 12:38 P.M. EDT
FALL EQUINOX September 23, 2015 4:21 A.M. EDT
WINTER SOLSTICE December 21, 2015 11:48 P.M. EST

Hopefully consumers will shop for clothing & footwear for the holidays.  It is important to help support the fashion industry.

Note: I had written this blog post on November 18th, 2015 and had emailed it to myself to publish later that evening.  Unfortunately, I just noticed today (January 26, 2016) that I accidentally forget to post this article.  Rather then let me writing disappear from the universe, I decided to post it anyway.  I back dated the article to post on the day originally intended.

Top Five Ways to Save Money on your Wedding Day

Yes, one of the money saving ways is "fashion" relevant.

According to a lot of people, your wedding day is the most important day of your life. This can mean that lots of happy couples looking to tie the knot can be careless when spending their money and often spend far more than they need to on their big day. But there are a few things that you can do to enjoy a wedding on a budget.
While it is important to ensure that you and everyone invited enjoys your wedding day, it is also important to be practical and stick to a budget. Check out the top five ways to save money on your wedding and still have a great day:
Ask Family and Friends to Cook the Food: You don’t need to spend thousands on food or use a professional catering company that includes a sit-down meal for your guests. In fact, a great way to reduce the cost of a wedding is to ask your family and friends to each cook something to bring to the party and serve lots of fun finger food rather than a complete meal.
Host the Party at Home: You don’t need to hire a plush venue that costs lots of money to decorate. If you prefer, you can just have the party at your house. If you don’t have enough space, then why not ask your parents or a friend if you can host the party at their place?  If you really want to rent somewhere, then you can keep the cost down by hiring a small venue such as a local hall.
Skip the Band – Play your own Music: There’s no need to pay for an expensive band to come and play the music at your wedding when you can put your favourite CDs on instead. Bands can be expensive and somewhat unnecessary, as all you need to have lots of fun is great people around you, lots of tasty food and drinks plus some music in the background.
Buy a Non-Wedding Dress: One of the biggest costs of a wedding day is the clothes, but there are a few things you can do to reduce this cost. You can still opt for white or cream but you don’t need to have an actual wedding dress to look amazing on your big day and in the pictures. All your wedding photos can be put together into a photobook that you can easily order through an online company like Photobox. You can go to a second-hand shop and buy a wedding dress from there or go one step further and buy a nice non-wedding dress from a regular shop.
Pick Your Own Flowers: Flowers can also be expensive for a wedding and they also go to waste after the celebrations are over, which is a costly shame. Why not pick flowers from your garden and make your own bouquets? Ask your relatives if you can take some flowers from their gardens to create the centrepieces for the tables and the bouquets.
Many couples spend large amounts of money on their wedding day, but there are lots of things that you can do to keep the cost down. Let’s be honest – getting married is all about the romance, not how much money you spend, and you don’t need to break the bank to have a wonderful wedding day.

Insquin Waterborne PU Textiles for Apparel

Covestro and ISOTEX announce joint program to promote waterborne PU technology for textiles.
ISOTEX Engineering, a SANTEX GROUP company, announces a joint program with Covestro to develop and market technologies for PU synthetics, technical textiles, films and foams based on INSQIN® waterborne polyurethane technology.

ISOTEX Engineering has announced a new agreement with Covestro, using INSQIN® technology to develop total solutions for the textile industry. The two companies will jointly promote environmentally-friendly solutions for PU coated fabrics, addressing the emerging requirements from the sportswear, fashion and automotive industries.

ISOTEX Engineering machines will guarantee optimal production standards using INSQIN® technology. The new line of machines will be designed for using INSQIN® technology with process innovation from ISOTEX Engineering, to produce waterborne PU synthetic materials and other coated textiles.

More about INSQIN®:

It starts with pure waterborne PU technology from Covestro, the inventor of PU - formerly known under the brand Bayer. INSQIN® technology, designed especially for the coating of textiles, brings functionality to fabrics and astounding quality to synthetic materials.

Encompassing a range of waterborne PU dispersions (PUD’s), INSQIN® technology opens up a wealth of possibilities to enhance and transform fabrics. For example quieter, more comfortable functional layers and high performance screen printing for apparel or footwear fabrics. Or PU synthetic material able to match both the design requirements of fashion and the performance requirements of sports applications. And importantly, INSQIN® enables efficient and solvent-free manufacturing processes, thereby addressing some of the major concerns around coated fabric material manufacturing.

But INSQIN® is even more. Covestro offers a unique set of services to accelerate the introduction of new products and promote sustainable practices in the supply chain. They work closely with both manufacturers and brand owners on projects, connecting needs from the market with the possibilities offered by their  technology.
Let’s learn a little more about PU textiles in general.  The following is about PU materials generally stated, it is not specifically about Isotex or other the companies listed above.

By the way, PU (Poly) Synthetic Leather is a man-made material that will represent the look and feel of Genuine Leather.

The following information about PU textiles from Brentano Fabrics: “Polyurethane is a greener alternative to PVC (vinyl) and leather in both production and after-care. Naturally soft and flexible, polyurethane does not require the solvents used to soften PVC or leather in the manufacturing process. Leather production is an especially chemical-laden process involving heavy metals. Polyurethane can also be designed to deteriorate after a period of use specific to interior design applications, whereas PVC never degrades. It leaches toxins into landfills and emits carcinogenic dioxin when incinerated.”  (source: http://www.brentanofabrics.com/fabrics_FAQ/eco_polyurethane.aspx)
