How Much Underwear is Enough

If you are wondering, "how much underwear is enough?"  The answer is that you can never own enough.  It is important to keep in mind that you should rotate "new" into your wardrobe and "old" into the garbage from time to time.

Did you know that 45 percent of millennial women own four or more styles of panties (briefs are most popular) and men have two weeks’ worth of underwear in their dresser drawers (58 percent said they wear only one style)?

Briefs, hipsters and bikinis are the top-three styles owned, worn and purchased. Of the total number of panties sold, 31 percent are briefs, 19 percent are hipsters and 19 percent are bikinis.

String bikinis and thongs are worn more often during the summer; other styles are unaffected by changes in the season. Of women who only wear one style, they are most likely to wear briefs, the top style for women aged 55 and older.

On average, men have two week's worth of underwear.  Men own an average of 16 pairs of underwear and regularly rotate 13 different pairs. Asked about the underwear in their drawer, 58 percent of men said they only wear one type; 26 percent wear two different styles; 9 percent wear three different types; and an adventurous 7 percent have four or more different types of underwear in their drawer.

Real Shape and Size of US Consumers

BodiData, Inc. a Silicon Valley-based technology company that specializes in generating big data on three-dimensional body measurements and Alvanon, the global apparel business expert, have signed a strategic partnership agreement that will deliver both big data and analysis on the shape and size of the diverse and complex US consumer population.

Under the terms of the agreement Alvanon will integrate BodiData's body dimension data into its own demographic database. With Alvanon's contextual insight, apparel brands will be able to update their product fit and sizing, including measurement tables, size charts, grade rules, block libraries and identify new growth opportunities for product and market development.

BodiData, has patented the only multi-sensor handheld body scanning technology for measuring fully clothed individuals. Its database was created through the largest ever North American scan program, using millimetre wave kiosk scanner booths in over 55 US malls and resulting in the largest database of US body measurements in the world with hundreds of thousands of data points for each individual.

"Where Google, Facebook and Amazon may have user interest, behaviour and transaction data, they do not have detailed data on a user's physical body," explained Tuoc Long, CEO and director of BodiData, Inc. He added that BodiData has the potential to deliver a large category of consumer data that no other company can offer. "Alvanon is the only Apparel consulting expert we will be working with in the retail apparel sector.  Its deep industry domain knowledge enables it to extract and utilize the data we collect to provide strategic consumer and market insight."

Payless Filing Chapter 11

Update: On April 4, 2017, Payless’ North American entities, as well as two foreign Hong Kong-based entities involved in logistics (CBL) and supply chain (DAL), filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri to facilitate the financial and operational restructuring necessary to strengthen its balance sheet and position the Company for long-term success. Payless is also filing for recognition of the U.S. Chapter 11 proceedings under Part IV of the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Is Payless filling Chapter 11?

Back in January, Reuters reported that Payless was trying to manage $665 million in debt and was "considering several options."  More recently, according to Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter have suggested that the struggling retailer could possibly pull the trigger on bankruptcy filing soon.  Earlier this month, a source familiar with the matter told Footwear News that Payless was expected to file for Chapter 11 protection in April.

According to their website as of today, "Payless ShoeSource is the largest specialty family footwear retailer in the Western Hemisphere, offering a trend-right and comprehensive range of everyday and special occasion shoes and accessory items at affordable prices for every member of the family."

Jeff Gennette was elected president and chief executive officer on March 23, 2017. 

Prior to CEO, Gennette was president of Macy’s, Inc. since March 2014. Previously, he was chief merchandising officer of Macy’s, Inc. (formerly known as Federated Department Stores, Inc.), a position to which he was appointed in February 2009.

Gennette began his retail career in 1983 as an executive trainee at Macy’s West in San Francisco. He held positions of increased responsibilities, including vice president and division merchandise manager for men’s collections, and senior vice president and general merchandise manager for men’s and children’s. In 2004, Gennette was appointed executive vice president and director of stores at Macy’s Central in Atlanta. From February 2006 to February 2008, Gennette served as chairman and chief executive officer of Seattle-based Macy’s Northwest.
