Trunk Club Being Acquired by Nordstrom

Nordstrom, Inc. announced today it has entered into an agreement to acquire Trunk Club, a personalized clothing service for men. The men's market is one of the fastest growing and most rapidly changing segments in retail, and Trunk Club has created a unique approach to capture the imagination of an under-served customer. They deliver a stylist service that combines the convenience of online with a high-touch, personalized shopping experience. The acquisition aligns with Nordstrom's strategic priorities around superior customer service, fashion, relevance and a seamless shopping experience.

Trunk Club CEO Brian Spaly said, "Nordstrom is stellar at many of the things we aim to improve on to offer our members the best possible service: inventory management, planning and logistics are great examples. We knew that a partnership with the best-in-class retailer could significantly enhance our member experience and we are excited to have found a company that is such a natural fit with our culture and approach to customer experience."

Trunk Club offers a full suite of solutions, from day to day ready-to-wear basics to high-end custom garments. Customers can seamlessly experience the service across the web, mobile and in-store, with showrooms in Chicago, Dallas and Washington, D.C., and a fourth opening inLos Angeles next month. These offer the opportunity for customers to meet face to face with their Trunk Club stylists. The five year old business is high growth. "We have more than 1,500 talented personal stylists at Nordstrom as well – in our stores. This complimentary service is an important and successful volume driver for us that our customers appreciate," said Erik Nordstrom. "What Trunk Club does adds to our service capabilities - we can learn from them about what they call 'assisted commerce' so we can continue to meet the evolving needs of customers."

Trunk Club will continue to operate independently and focus on its core business while leveraging Nordstrom's capabilities and resources to scale its business. It will be managed by its current leadership team and remain headquartered in Chicago. The transaction is subject to closing conditions, including customary regulatory and stockholder approvals, and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2014. Nordstrom will provide additional details of the transaction on its upcoming earnings conference call on August 14, 2014. Guggenheim Securities, LLC is acting as financial advisor to Nordstrom; Paul Hastings LLP and Lane Powell PC are acting as its counsel. Goodwin Proctor LLP is acting as counsel to Trunk Club.

Musicians Inspire Fashion: Fitz and The Tantrums

This blog post is primarily about the band.  If you are not interested in music, you may want to turn back now.  Apparel Search was compelled to share this news with you because we really like the photo above.  Musicians have an interesting sense of style.  It is nice to see them grouped together so we can get a quick glimpse at band fashion.

On the heels of "The Walker" - Fitz and The Tantrums' second single to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in less than a year - being certified Gold, the Los Angeles-based band announces plans to remain on the road through November 2014. Thefall headline run will kick off on September 2 at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester, NY. Beginning in November, the band will be joined by special guest Big Data on select dates, including an evening at New York City's Terminal 5 (November 12) and a sold-out show at First Avenue in Minneapolis (November 21). See below for itinerary.

Fitz and The Tantrums roll into Chicago this week for a performance on the Lollapalooza Main Stage on Saturday, August 2, and an official Lollapalooza aftershow at the Metro on August 3, which is sold out. While in town, Fitz will be singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" at the Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies game this Thursday, July 31 at Wrigley Field.  On August 25, Fitz and The Tantrums will play a three-song set at the Opening Ceremony for the 2014 US Open in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.  The performance will be carried live by ESPN as part of the cable network's comprehensive coverage of the US Open.

Fitz and The Tantrums are: Fitz (vocals), Noelle Scaggs (vocals/tambourine), James King (saxophone), Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards), John Wicks (drums) and Joseph Karnes (bass).

TargetExpress for Your Convenience

Target opened the doors of its first TargetExpress store in Minneapolis, Minn. last week. The abbreviated 20,000-square-feet retail venue was designed specifically for the generation of consumers known for being acclimated to speedy and efficient shopping experiences (Millennial customers).

The TargetExpress is about a sixth of the size of traditional Target store locations.  The prototype is similar in size and feel as a drugstore along the lines of Walgreens, CVS, or Duane Reade but has its own special flair with merchandise that includes groceries, bedding, smartphones and more. Target is clearly keen on obtaining opportunities in the urban core following the population growth in those areas.

In 2012, Target began testing urban area markets by testing a 80,000 to 100,000 square-foot store format called CityTarget, to appeal to the urban shopper. Now there are eight CityTargets in cities such as Chicago, San Francisco and Portland, Ore. 

CityTarget and TargetExpress are aimed at shoppers picking up fewer items because they are on the go and may not have the time or desire to shop at the larger retailers. It is more of a convenience store shopping experience in my mind.

Apparel Search is not sure how many of these new TargetExpress stores will eventually open, but we assume the major players in the convenience store market are paying close attention.  This may be disruptive to some retailers.  We are not certain, but we did read an article that mentions Target is already planning four more locations for 2015.  One in Minnesota and three in the San Francisco Bay Area. 

Although the store does sell basic socks and underwear, it doesn’t have a full apparel section. But it does have a full-size beauty department, along with the retailer’s fairly new beauty concierge service.

Super-sizing in retail is so yesterday’s news. Today, smaller is sometimes better.
