NYC Fashion Forward Internships 2016

Aspiring fashionistas from the five boroughs are gaining a marvelous opportunity to jump start a career in New York City’s most glamorous industry (yes, I mean the fashion industry).

Gabrielle Fialkoff, senior advisor to Mayor Bill de Blasio, announced the launch of NYC Fashion Forward which appears to be a public-private partnership backed by the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).  The program plans to create a significant amount of paid internships to local students who aspire to work in fashion.

NYC Fashion Forward includes 100 paid spots at designers, including Alice + Olivia, J Crew and Coach.

The city announced on Monday a new program that connects high school and college students with internships in fashion.

Students can apply for NYC Fashion Forward through the Ladders for Leaders program.  Internships run for six weeks, starting in July.  Salaries vary depending on the designer.

For the summer of 2016, as part of NYC Fashion Forward, NYCEDC will commit to financially back 60 summer jobs, created in collaboration with the Mayor’s Fund, the CFDA and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, that pair participating students with employers that will be able to best offer real world training and mentorship. In addition, the Mayor’s Fund and CFDA will work with prominent, large-scale fashion firms across the city to create the remaining 40 employer-funded summer internships.

The following employers have committed to host young people this year through NYC Fashion Forward:

3.1 Phillip Lim
Alice + Olivia
CFDA
Coach
David Wolfson & Associates, Inc.
Design Incubator Inc.
Designers & Agents
Diane von Furstenberg
J. Crew
Haskell Jewels LLC
K/LLER COLLECTION
Kate Spade & Company
Krupp Group
Lulu Frost
Maison De Mode
Melissa Joy Manning
New York Embroidery Studio
Nicholas K
Opening Ceremony
Rachel Comey
Timo Weiland
Tommy Hilfiger

NYC Fashion Forward is part of the NYC Center for Youth Employment’s ongoing efforts to create pipelines of young talent into our city’s industries, in order to build employment services that meet the needs of both the youngest New Yorkers and city business. Launched in May 2015 by the Mayor’s Fund, the NYC Center for Youth Employment has a specific goal of supporting 100,000 unique work-related experiences each year, including high-quality summer jobs, career exposure, skills-building, and supportive mentorships, by 2020. In collaboration with city agencies, employers and other stakeholders, the Center is also focused on evaluating the city’s youth workforce system as a whole, with an eye toward expanding effective programs and filling in gaps.

Are you familiar with the MADE Fashion Week and Made in NY?

Announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio in February 2015 at MADE Fashion Week, the ambitious suite of ‘Made in NY’ fashion initiatives tripled the City’s investment in the local fashion economy from $5 million to $15 million. Part of the City’s expansion of its signature ‘Made in NY’ program, the new fashion initiatives set out to cultivate a robust pipeline of fashion industry talent within New York City, catalyze growth of emerging creative businesses, and support fashion manufacturing facilities across all five boroughs.  To date, the initiatives have showcased over 150 local fashion brands to an estimated 650 million people; connected emerging businesses with over 75 industry-leading mentors; generated $500,000 in sales for New York City-based designers; and awarded over $4.5 million in financing and prizes to emerging and small businesses.

Explore a Career in the Fashion Industry

If you enjoy fashion as much as we think you do, it may be a good idea for you to investigate opportunities to work in the apparel industry.  OK, it is understood that it is very possible that you already work in our fabulous industry.  So, I better break this post up into two distinct parts.   Section one, for those new to the industry.  Section two, for those of you that are already entrenched.

New to the Fashion Industry
  1. Step one is to learn about the fashion industry.  Obviously, you will need to know what you are potentially getting yourself into.
  2. Step two, attend a college or university to further educate yourself in regard to a specific aspect of business.  Or get a well-balanced but “industry specific” education at a school that specializes in fashion or textiles.
  3. Step three, prepare a resume.
  4. Step four, do all of the following:
  • Attend a job fair.
  • Meet with an employment agency.
  • Research job opportunities online.
Here is one more important tip, which is not technically a step that I official recommend, but it may be helpful.  Make a mental decision regarding your thoughts on internships. It is debatable if they are a good idea or not.  You will need to know if you are willing to take an internship to get your foot in the door or if you want to be patient and go for full employment from the start.

Experienced Fashion Industry Professional

If you are not new to the business, you probably already know most of the ins and outs required to be successful.  However, it is important to remind yourself on occasion that it is always a good time to discover new opportunities.  For those of us that do not own our own business, staying in one position for too long will cause you to stagnate.  Yes, it is true.  Your mind, your inspiration, and your opportunities for advancement may become set to simmer if you stay with one company for too long.  With that said, this is obviously NOT always the case.  Sometimes, the longer you stay at a company the better off your career.  My suggestion to move job hop every few years is a generality (good for many people, but not all people).  You will need to review your own career path to make a proper determination.

You may want to stop by the employment section here on Apparel Search to evaluate resources and your career options.

By the way, you can search for fashion industry employment at the Fashion Job Search website.

Don’t forget, if you are trying to learn more about the fashion industry, check out the Apparel Search fashion industry overview term for additional resources.

Fashion Jobs for Women Only

Darn, I found what I thought would be a perfect employment opportunity.  As I was reading through the list of responsibilities I ran into a little problem when reaching bullet point number four.  Everything else was perfect, but not sure how I would be able to work my way around this one.

Here is how the job responsibility read, "A critical requirement of this position is to measure female consumers to determine the proper fit for bras and various other undergarments and intimate apparel in the privacy of the women’s fitting room on a regular basis."

Sure, I would be very good at the job, but I don't think that I would be the ideal candidate that the employer or the customer had in mind.

I have a funny feeling that this is a gender bias job opportunity.  Can men apply for this position?

This particular job opportunity was for a Sales Merchandiser position at Hanesbrands.  If you are qualified (and female), you can find the listing at the fashion job search website (which is a sister site of Apparel Search).

If you want to work in the clothing industry, but you are not sure what positions are most appropriate for your skills, you may want to browse the clothing industry job descriptions section here on our site.

Also, it is important to note that we are NOT sure if this employment opportunity mentioned above is for men & women.  We are only "assuming" that it is intended for women only.  For more specifics, you would really need to consult with their HR department, not base any judgement on this blog post.  In our opinion, this job for by for ladies only.
