Google Evil Empire

Google+ Closed Possibly Due to Evil Empire Development

Is Google an evil empire?  "Don't be evil" was a motto that was officially used within Google's corporate code of conduct.  In October 2015, Alphabet (the new Google corporate name) took "Do the right thing" as its motto instead.  Why did they replace "don't be evil".  When they say "do the right thing" does that mean do the right thing for the "company"?  Clearly a distinction between doing the right thing for the company and doing the right thing for users of the service.  Hey Google, maybe it is time for, "Do the right thing and don't be evil".

The following article is only somewhat relevant to fashion.  It is relevant to fashion due to the fact that we had thoroughly enjoyed Google+ and had spent a great deal of time posting to our fashion relevant pages and communities on the social network.  In fact, each blog post from this fashion blog was posted on Google plus.  Apparel Search is very disappointing that Google has shut down the service due to what appears to be a poorly reported security breach.

Warning: If you are interested in reading only about clothing, shoes, handbags, etc., this is NOT the article for you.  Skip this one, unless you are curious.  Again, this particle article is not really relevant to our typical topic of interest.

Google+ Is Closing

Another FAILED Google Experiment

Why did Google+ close?  Read on for a strong possibility of the reason.

Rachel Roy Fashion Brand History

Did you know that Topson Downs develops, markets, and licenses the Rachel Roy fashion brand.

Below is a little bit of the history behind the fashion designer Rachel Roy and the brand ownership history.

Roy's first job in fashion was at age 14, at a Contempo Casuals clothing outlet in her hometown.  After college, she came to New York City, where she worked as a stylist for magazines and music videos.  She became an intern at urban fashion line Rocawear, where she rose to the position of creative director of the women's and children's divisions and met her future husband Damon Dash. In 2005 Roy launched her eponymous fashion collection.
Roy in February 2005.
Rachel Roy Fashion
In early 2006, Roy received a Bollywood industry award for her contribution to American fashion.  In 2007, Roy was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Roy has also received publicity in the teen market, including in Teen Vogue; in their April 2009 issue, Rachel did a “how to,” where she transforms a regular T-shirt into an edgy prom dress.

In June 2008, Jones Apparel Group formed a joint venture with the Rachel Roy brand.

In August 2009, Roy launched The RACHEL Rachel Roy collection, an affordable diffusion line of sportswear, shoes and accessories. The label "RACHEL Rachel Roy" is available exclusively at Macy’s in the United States and at The Bay in Canada.

Roy designed a capsule collection in partnership with model Jessica Stam for Macy’s stores and RachelRoy.com in Fall 2010.

The Rachel Roy brand, formerly operating under The Jones Group, became a Topson Downs property in the summer of 2014, when the manufacturer purchased a majority equity stake in the designer's company, and gave a new home to the brand's six-year-old team dedicated to design, merchandising, sales, production, in-store development and marketing.

Founded January 25, 1971, Topson Downs has over 40 years in the fashion apparel industry.  They started in the downtown Los Angeles fashion scene, with all operations in one small building.  Gradually, Topson expanded into manufacturing worldwide.  In the late seventies, Topson Downs expanded into Mexico.  As a pioneer in outsourced shipping, Topson started a trend that has become mainstream in the garment industry.

The past decade has been a major expansion era for Topson Downs.  In 1998, they expanded into China and eventually opened a China design room.  Starting with junior apparel, they gradually expanded their product collections to include all categories of women's apparel.

Since they started, the apparel industry has evolved drastically.  Topson Downs was ahead of the curve and began focusing on accommodating the mass-market retailers and specialty stores.  Through building these relationships, Topson Downs has become a reliable supplier for quick response manufacturing.

Rachel Roy maintains 100 percent control of her name, while Topson Downs is responsible for developing marketing and licensing the brand. The manufacturer also created a new branded head office for Rachel Roy in the heart of New York City's fashion district.

The Rachel Roy collections has been sold at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and other fine retailers.

Authentic Brands Buys Jones New York

Authentic Brands Group, LLC (ABG), owner of a global portfolio of iconic fashion, sports and lifestyle, celebrity, media and entertainment brands, announced yesterday the purchase of American fashion brand, Jones New York. The acquisition marks a new milestone in the company’s growth, propelling the ABG portfolio to more than $4.5 billion in retail sales.

Jones New York is an esteemed American brand renowned for its reputation of excellence in design, quality and style. With an active and loyal consumer following, today the brand drives close to $1B in retail sales across department stores in the US as well as key international markets including Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

As part of this important acquisition ABG announces the appointment of Mark Weber as Strategic Advisor whose immediate focus will be on the Jones New York brand.   Weber has a storied career having been both President and CEO of PVH Corp, and most recently, served an 8-year term as CEO of LVMH, Inc. Sycamore Partners May Have Given Up on Express

The private equity firm Sycamore Partners has given up on an effort to acquire the young adult retail Express.

Shares of Express were down 15 percent in early trading on Tuesday.

Sycamore, which owns a collection of fashion retailers, said in June 2014 that it had bought a 9.9 percent, or 8.3 million share, stake in Express and was interested in acquiring the whole company.  The firm said last year that it paid $106.2 million to buy its stake in Express. The retailer, a former division of Limited Brands, had been experiencing declining profit.

On January 20, 2015 the New York Times (Dealbook) wrote,  “After several months of talks, Sycamore said in a terse announcement on Tuesday that it had ended its pursuit of a buyout because it could not get deal financing on favorable terms.”

Sycamore has made a name for itself in fashion, with deals to buy the women’s wear chain Talbots for about $400 million and the retailer Hot Topic for about $600 million.  It later acquired the Jones Group, whose brands include Nine West and Anne Klein, in a deal worth $2.2 billion.

After ending its buyout effort, Sycamore said it was now bound by disclosure restrictions until June 15.  Express (NYSE:EXPR) said Sycamore would be free to come back with another deal after June 15.

Fashion Police Joan to Kathy

If you are truly a fashionista you are most likely familiar with the TV show Fashion Police on E!.  You are also probably aware that Kathy Griffin has recently replaced the late & great Joan Rivers.  So, the question that we are now facing is, “will the show be successful with its new host & cast?”

Kathy has inherited the title, but will she adequately fill Joan’s shoes?  In all honesty, our verdict is still out.  Just curious as to your opinion.

The new Fashion Police With Kathy Griffin was brand new starting Monday January 12, 2015.  The day after the 72nd Golden Globe Awards so that there was plenty of issues available to discuss.  The new fashion panel show is back with new hosts Kathy Griffin, Brad Goreski, Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic.  Off the roster is obviously Joan Rivers and Brad Goreski.

Fashion Police is an American television series airing on E!.  The series became a weekly program on September 10, 2010 where the hosts discuss the dos and don'ts of celebrity fashion.  Kathy opened the new version of the show with a quick, sweet moment for Joan by staying, "I just want to thank my good friend, who we all miss, Joan Rivers. Of course. So Joan, I know you're watching from heaven but don't get it twisted. I will not be afraid to bring the hammer down on anyone and everyone. I learned from the best."  The previous version of the show often had celebrity hosts such as Khloé Kardashian, Ryan Lochte, Jay Manuel, Nicki Minaj, NeNe Leakes, Aubrey O'Day, Ali Fedotowsky, Snooki, Ciara, Chanel Iman, Melanie Brown, Tori Spelling, Zendaya, Kimora Lee Simmons, Chelsea Kane, Tara Reid, Bonnie McKee, Jaime Pressly, Tiffani Thiessen, Mischa Barton, Kylie Minogue, and Joan's daughter Melissa Rivers.  We assume that the new version of the Fashion Police show will also utilize famous celebs as guest hosts.
Fashion Police Hosts

By the way, the term fashion police existed prior to the show.   Essentially fashion police is defined as a term for people who are considered experts in dressing well who comment on the clothing of others.  If you are interested in reading an alternate definition that is not in regard specifically to the show on E!, you can read the fashion police term on Apparel Search.

About Kathy Griffin

Comedian Kathy Griffin is joining the cast of Fashion Police beginning in 2015.  Born in Chicago in 1960, Kathy Griffin's career as an entertainer began in 1980.  In the 1990s, Griffin began performing as a standup comedian and also appeared as a guest star on several television shows (such as her notable Seinfeld guest-appearance in the episode The Doll). She achieved recognition in a supporting role on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan (1996–2000).  Her breakthrough came on the Bravo reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (2005–2010), which became a ratings hit for the network and earned her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Program.  Griffin also previously hosted the talk show Kathy.  Griffin had previously made an appearance as a guest-host on Fashion Police in 2013.

About Giuliana Rancic

Giuliana dePandi, as a young girl moved from her hometown in Naples, Italy, to the United States.  She earned a degree in journalism from the University of Maryland and eventually a master's degree in journalism from American University.  After several television hosting jobs, including co-host of two Miss USA pageants, she was added as the solo host to E! News in 2005.  As co-host on Fashion Police, Rancic offers her fresh, trendy take on current fashion.  Along with her co-host position on Fashion Police, Rancic also stars in her reality TV series, Giuliana and Bill, that depicts family and career life of both spouses.

About Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne is the daughter of famous musician Ozzy Osbourne (yes, Apparel Search is a huge fan of Ozzy).  In the early 2000s, the MTV reality show The Osbournes brought Kelly and her family to the spotlight and came with both television and fashion opportunities.   In 2009 she got engaged to male model Luke Worrall and that same year is well known for her addition to season 9 of Dancing with the Stars, where she took third runner-up.   Osboune’s addition to Fashion Police is featured on her official website, kellyosbourne.com. Her eclectic style and unique variety of clothes offers each episode a different take on fashion.  Osbourne most often disagreed with Rivers, giving the show a more balanced representation of opinions.

About Brad Goreski

Celebrity fashion stylist and TV personality Brad Goreski is joining the cast of Fashion Police beginning in January 2015.  As a stylist his clients have included Jessica Alba, Demi Moore, Christina Ricci, Rashida Jones, and Minka Kelly.  He is also the star of the TV series It's a Brad, Brad World.

About Joan Rivers

In 1989, she had aired her own daytime talk show, and the next year won an Emmy Award and earned her place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  By 1996, she was hosting the series, Live from the Red Carpet, on E! Network, which lead to her to the co-host position on 'Fashion Police'.  River’s special brand of critical humor and biting cleverness not only boosted ratings of Fashion Police, but also the ratings of E! News itself.  Episodes typically include River’s take on a recent celebrity outfit choice, where her opinion is the dominant point of view of the show.  River’s position as host of the show gives her an authority presence on fashion critique and acceptable ways to dress.  Although infamous for her negative statements about other’s wardrobe, Rivers has an equal history of complimenting celebrity style as well as making fun of her own choices.  On September 4, 2014, Rivers died at age 81 of cardiac arrest.  On September 22, 2014, the premiere of “Joan Day” hit a record of 1.1 million viewers.  Episodes of River’s best, funniest, most-watched jokes aired from 7am-7pm, including a special 90-minute commemorative episode.

About George Kotsiopoulos

His career took off as a Market Editor and Fashion Associate for the New York Times Magazine, where he launched himself into the fashion industry.  After eight years there, in 2005 he co-hosted Sephora for E! Entertainment as well as made appearances on Good Morning America as a stylist consultant.  In 2011, Kostiopoulos was featured in the 17th edition of OUT Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential gay men and women.  He joined the cast of Fashion Police in 2010 as a regular co-host.  Kostiopoulos commented well on the niche of men’s fashion.   Kotsiopoulos offered fashion advice for men and women based on a man’s point of view.

The "Fashion Police" debates the appearance of Hollywood's stars and duds.  This includes fashion spotted on the red carpet, in movies, on the street, etc.  Are they doing a good job at reporting the news and giving good guidance regarding the do’s and don’ts in regard to style and fashion.

Do you think that Kathy Griffin is a good replacement for Joan Rivers?  Possibly, it is too early to tell.  Maybe we should wait a few more episodes before making any sort of judgment.

Tune in to an all-new Fashion Police next Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 at 9/8c on E!

The Woolmark Story

In 1964, the iconic Woolmark symbol was born.

Its purpose: to act as an independent quality assurance of every product it adorns—more than 5 billion of them, so far, making the Woolmark brand the best-known textile quality brand in the world.

As the global authority on Merino wool, The Woolmark Company works with the global textile and fashion industries at every level, developing better textiles and driving consumer demand.

The story begins with the farmers who rear Merino sheep to grow and harvest the highest quality wool known to man. Working with textile mills from Japan to Italy and everywhere in between, The

Woolmark Company invests heavily in research and development, advancing the fibre and inspiring the world’s leading fashion designers to craft garments from Merino wool.

For 50 years, the Woolmark logo has strived to showcase the extraordinary versatility and innate luxury of Merino wool, creating a fleece that to this day is coveted across the globe.

Wool is a 100 per cent natural and renewable fibre. Sheep live on grass, water, fresh air and sunshine. Wool is a fibre that is grown – not man-made. Every year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool a renewable fibre source.

January Jones was photographed wearing STRÖM Brand earlier today in Los Angeles! The Mad Men star looked cool and casual in her Fyra Cigarette in Indis Wash on her way to lunch with her son Xander. The same style was recently worn by Malin Akerman ($330, www.strombrand.com)!
