MakeUp in Paris 2015

Following extensive market research, BASF has identified the most influential cultural drivers set to impact the beauty trends in 2016 and beyond. The company will address its findings at this year’s MakeUp in Paris trade show from June 18 to 19, 2015 at the Carrousel du Louvre – introducing tailored products and solutions that help manufacturers of decorative cosmetics leverage the opportunities these trends bring with them. “We have been keeping a close eye on regional and global developments, as well as the latest fashion shows, so we can help our customers create products and brand experiences that will really resonate with consumers,” said Valerie Pian-Parison, Marketing Manager at BASF Personal Care Europe.

A new generation of gold synthetic mica

Celebrating a sense of timeless beauty, the “Ancient Wisdom” trend from BASF’s “Color Trends 2016” – a collection of effect pigments and formulations – is based on the ancient world’s ideals of beauty. It also calls for aesthetics inspired by the Renaissance and Romantic eras, which were reflected in the spring fashion shows – with illuminated cheeks, gold leaf accents and bronze glows. In 2016, gold shades will play a key role. In response to this, BASF has expanded its portfolio of gold pearls to include Chione™ Celestial Gold – a new generation of gold synthetic mica. It helps create a pure, white shade of gold and a shimmering glow and shine in various cosmetics.

Preview of BASF’s “Color Trends 2017”

Meanwhile, BASF’s “Color Trends 2017” anticipate that metallic shades of gold will continue to be extremely relevant – but with the focus shifting to bronze, platinum, and champagne. In an exclusive preview of the coming effect pigment collection, BASF is also unveiling a selection of colors inspired by the jazzy hues found in nature: “ALIVE” features saturated, intense colors such as luscious greens, bold blues, and popping pinks reminiscent of juicy berries and vibrant fruits.

Cutting-edge looks with color travel pigments

In the latest fashion trends, classic cuts are being reinterpreted with iridescent tissue, bringing a touch of vitality and vibrancy to timeless styles. BASF’s color travel pigments enable manufacturers to capitalize on this trend in both the cosmetics and personal care segments: Harnessing the latest pigment technology, the ReflecksTM MultiDimensions and MultiReflectionsTM ranges create a dramatic sparkle effect and visual dimensionality, and make eye-catching color travel effects possible.

BASF represented at “Innovation Tour” and make-up artist competition

With its “Luminous Skin Serum to Oil”, which is characterized by a milky texture and a hint of gold, BASF is also represented at the trade show’s “Innovation Tour.” This special exhibition space is dedicated to new solutions selected by the “MakeUp Innovation Tour” jury. In addition, BASF will support the first “MakeUp in Paris Boxing Ring”: Under the leadership and arbitration of the Brazilian Make-up Artist Mily, students of Make-up Atelier Paris will use the BASF effect pigments Chione™ Celestial Gold, ReflecksTM Multidimension Glistening Gold, Chione™ Pixel White and Cloisonné® Vivid Red to illustrate the themes “Roaring Twenties,“ “the Demimonde Years“ and “from the Flower Power Years to the Palace Years.“

Luquafleece Functional Cooling Vests

With higher outdoor temperatures or increasing skin temperature during sports or work activity, the water molecules firmly bound inside the functional cooling clothing absorb the thermal energy, evaporate from the large surface of the three-dimensional nonwoven structure and thereby cool down the wearer. The body sweats less and thereby saves energy that would usually be needed for thermoregulation. External cooling can therefore provide an increase in performance of up to ten percent in hot conditions.

Humans are born runners. Evolution once gave us the ability to overcome the distance of many kilometers through the hot savannas of Africa. In addition to the upright posture of the body and head and the optimized mechanics of legs and feet, cooling by millions of sweat glands plays a key role. Under extreme stress, they can release about one liter of sweat per hour and cool down the body by evaporation.
Cooling Vests
This limits our performance even at moderate outdoor temperatures. Athletes as well as workers and many other people worldwide who are exposed to high temperatures are therefore now using active functional cooling clothing. Thanks to innovative materials, this provides evaporative cooling which is individually dosable and lasts for hours. The functional cooling textiles of the E.COOLINE and IDENIXX brands, incorporating the specially developed superabsorbent nonwoven fabric from BASF, offer a mobile air conditioning system to wear which effectively supports the cooling system of the human body.

Cooling vests, for example, are easy to use and can be worn like any other item of clothing once being activated by “charging” with water. The water enters the active layer – the Luquafleece® from BASF – after being rapidly absorbed and distributed through a bacteriostatic textile fabric. “The fibers of this nonwoven fabric are coated with superabsorbent polymers (SAP) through a special technology. They absorb the water in a few seconds and retain it,” explains the expert Norbert Heidinger of BASF New Business GmbH, who markets the material.

Like a fishing net, the polymer network of the superabsorber traps increasing numbers of water particles until its elastic restoring forces compensate the osmotic forces of the prevailing concentration gradient. In this way Luquafleece® can absorb ten times its weight in water and retain it so firmly, that the functional textiles are dry on the surface.

Functional cooling textiles of core sports and occupational safety brands use a special superabsorber fleece from BASF.

Luquafleece® - the superabsorbent fabric

Luquafleece® is produced by applying the starting materials directly onto the nonwoven fibers and only then polymerizing them to create the superabsorber. This stable combination is the key factor for the long-term applications in moisture-regulating office chairs.
  • Air permeable
  • Efficient climate control
  • Immobilized SAP – no release of powder
  • Easily combined with other materials (such as textile, nonwoven and film)
  • Ensured long term stability
  • Light weight performance product
What advantages offers the BASF product Luquafleece® for you?

In this joint project, it was particularly important for us to obtain a washable cooling product which is also hard-wearing and hygienic. The three-dimensional nonwoven fabric with its special fiber structure also offers an enormously large surface area capable of delivering 600 watts per liter of cooling energy through the evaporating water. Through our “cool to go” principle, the material generates a rapid and perceptible cooling effect even in extreme environmental conditions.

HanesBrands—whose venerable apparel lines include Hanes, Champion, Playtex, Bali and Maidenform, to name a few—has set significant environmental stewardship goals to reduce energy consumption and water use. The company’s recent investment in Baldwin’s Precision Application Systems, with a textile finishing technology that allows for accurate and controlled placement and therefore, reduced use of end-of-line chemicals and water, will help HanesBrands achieve its environmental sustainability goals. Additionally, Baldwin’s groundbreaking application system improves output through greater flexibility, fewer production steps and increased uptime.

Mike Abbott, HanesBrands Global Director of Research and Innovation, said: “Baldwin fulfilled our requirements to provide a solution that optimizes our productivity while reducing our environmental impact.” HanesBrands thoroughly evaluated the technology for eight months in live production conditions with positive results. Abbott continued: “During the evaluation period of the system, we have had outstanding results in productivity increase, and we can clearly see that this technology will make a great contribution to our future efficiency and sustainability savings.”
