America's Color Preferences

The following article about color is primarily about "home decor" colors. However, we thought that this may be helpful for those of you planning colors for your fashion projects as well.
Creative Study Reveals America's Favorite Colors.
Newly launched study that reveals the favorite colors of specific U.S. states and bigger cities -- based on home decor product purchases.
America's true colors are not red, white and blue, after all, but blue, b lack and gray, according to a new study ranking the U.S.'s favorite colors based on home décor purchases.

There are also strong regional differences in color preferences, reveals the study conducted by Spoonflower- www.spoonflower.com - which allows customers to design, print and sell their own fabric, wallpaper and gift wrap. California and the West buy black décor most; the South likes gray; the rest of America prefers blue.

A few results:

The top six colors nationally are blue, black, gray, pink, white and green.

The study's surprise findings for color experts include: the dismal ranking of red, in just seventh place; the high ranking of neutral colors, with black, gray and white all in the national top five; and the popularity of pink, which ranks fourth nationally and is the most bought color in no less than five major U.S. cities.

The study reveals the most popular color in every state and 74 U.S. cities, based on data from nearly 200,000 purchases on Spoonflower over two years.

Since we are in an election cycle, consider this political slant...

Blue is the top color in 41 states and just over half the cities, while red ranks top in none of either.

"Blue states have wiped red off the map," says Allison Polish, President of Spoonflower.

Black, however, ranks top in a block of five neighboring Western states (California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming), while gray does so in a swathe of three adjacent Southern states (Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma), plus North Dakota.

"The popularity of blue doesn’t surprise me," says Ethel Rompilla, professor of color theory at New York School of Interior Design, and author with Stefan Steil of a new online course, on Color for Interiors. “The reason for the universal popularity of blue, say color theorists, is likely the connection to sky and sea. There's nothing more uplifting than a clear blue sky on a sunny day."

W hat does surprise Rompilla is both the low ranking of red and the high ranking of so many neutral colors, like black, gray and white. "The latter may be because as color becomes more popular, the relief of neutrals is more needed.”

The traditional favorites of her own students, in informal surveys Rompilla has conducted over the years, have been blue, closely followed by red and green. “But more recently red and green have given way to other colors.”

Rompilla, however, is less surprised that gray is most popular in the South and black in the West. "My guess is that it may relate to the architecture, furniture and interiors, which are generally more traditional – hence graceful – in the South, while in the West homes can be more contemporary. In the latter case, the geometric scale and lack of decorative details may better support the boldness of black."

California is the largest "black décor" state, while both Los Angeles, its largest city, and Sacramen to, its capital, are both black décor towns.

San Francisco and Oakland, however, are both blue décor towns, as are New York, Washington DC, Miami, Houston and Dallas, among just over half (55%) of major U.S. cities – 41 of 74 in Spoonflower’s study. 18 cities (13%) buy black décor most; seven (5%), including Chicago and Boston, buy gray most, while pink ranks top in five (4%) cities – Detroit, El Paso, Indianapolis, Long Beach, Phoenix.

Who knew? "I’ve always found pink to be controversial," says Ethel Rompilla, surprised that pink ranks as high as fourth nationally. "People either love it or hate it. Although times are changing, it still is perceived as a feminine color."

White ranks top in two cities and green in one (Charleston).

None, however, of the three main “warm colors” – red, yellow, orange – rank top in either a single state or city, or among Spoonflower’s top six colors nationally. They come instead a lowly seventh, eighth and ninth respect ively in the national rankings and account between them for barely 8.5% of Spoonflower purchases.

"Not only have blue states wiped red ones off the map," says Allison Polish, "but cool (blue, green) and neutral (black, gray, white) colors have left warm ones in the cold."

Spoonflower's map of America's true colors + the top color in every state

http://www.spoonflower.com/americas_true_colors

METHODOLOGY: Spoonflower crunched the data from nearly 200,000 purchases of custom fabric, wallpaper and gift wrap by its customers over a two-year period and organized them under 15 color categories. It then weighted the scores by first identifying the number of customers buying a particular color in any given state or city and then dividing that number by the total number of Spoonflower customers in that state or city. That gave a better measure of the popularity for each color in any city or state and so identified the most popular/most purch ased col or in each state and city.

ABOUT SPOONFLOWER: Spoonflower - www.spoonflower.com - lets users design, print and sell their own fabric, wallpaper and gift wrap. Founded in 2008, it was the world's first web-based service for custom fabric creation and has become the world’s largest community of independent fabric designers. Pantone Colors of the Year 2016

It is not the color of the year, it is the "colors" of the year.

For the first time Pantone introduces two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity as the PANTONE Color of the Year 2016.  Yes, that is correct.  They selected two colors this year.

Pantone Color of the Year 2016 is both Rose Quartz and Serenity.
2016 Pantone Color Forecast
Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.

Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

Minion Yellow for Fashion

Did you know that Universal Pictures Despicable Me has inspired an actual color called Minion Yellow?

Minion Yellow Color Swatch
PANTONE Minion Yellow is an illuminating, energetic, friendly and fun-loving yellow shade that immediately calls out to you.

The executive director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman (Director of PCI; not the director of the movie) stated, "Just as the sun’s rays enliven us, PANTONE Minion Yellow is a color that heightens awareness and creates clarity, lighting the way to the intelligence, originality and the resourcefulness of an open mind – this is the color of hope, joy and optimism."

The partnership was born when Pharrell Williams, who helped create the music for the Despicable Me franchise, came up with the idea while the Pantone Color Institute, the research arm of the company that charts global color trends and studies how color influences human thought processes, emotions and physical reactions, noted the desire of the consumer to add more energizing color into their lives.

Pantone worked closely with the animation team at Illumination Entertainment to review the existing color range and to identify the most pure representation of the Minions’ iconic yellow color. The resulting PANTONE Minion Yellow is a custom color designed to represent the sweet and subversive characters. An extroverted hue, it projects playfulness and warmth and is suggestive of intellectual curiosity and enlightenment.
Minion Yellow
Illumination Entertainment is an American animation film production company, founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007. It has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Universal Studios and it is based in Santa Monica, California.  The company is best known for its first animated feature film Despicable Me (released in 2010), its sequel, Despicable Me 2 (2013) and its prequel/spin-off Minions (2015).

The custom PANTONE Minion Yellow color will be added to the PANTONE Fashion, Home + Interiors color palette.

PANTONE 16-3905 Lilac Gray
PANTONE 17-1564 Fiesta
PANTONE 15-1040 Iced Coffee
PANTONE 15-0146 Green Flash

According to Leatrice Eiseman the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute™, “Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.”

Below you will find an article from Pantone regarding fashion colors for Spring 2016 collections.  At the end of the news, you are welcome to share your thoughts on the color choices.

PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2016: A Transporting and Transformative Canvas

Influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, designers this season have gravitated toward a palette that is first and foremost calming. Paying homage to the beauty of natural resources, colors emerging in the Spring collections serve as vehicles that transport wearers to more tranquil, mindful environs which encourage relaxation first, followed by curiosity and exploration.

Designers were also inspired by the contrast of urban design and lush vegetation, leading to unexpected color combinations and collections reminiscent of architecture, travel and nostalgia. By creating looks that truly represent the world we live in, both constructed and organic, designers sought to awaken a sense of reflection, followed by playful escapism. Artists, many of whom are known for bold color usage and strong shapes and lines, played an influential role in this season's styles – from Matisse, Picasso and Frank Stella to Esther Stewart and Sam Falls. With Cuba and other destinations south of the border top of mind, designers are playing with courageous color statements that aren't afraid to be vibrant but at the same time are combined with quieting, classic and more natural tones.

A Unisex Palette

Colors this season transcend cultural and gender norms.  Vivid brights give way to excitement and optimism, though quiet stability prevails in this season’s palette. For Spring 2016 there are truly no perceivable distinctions in color choices between the men’s and women’s collections, both of which focus on a desire to breathe and reflect, then play.

The soothing, calming nature of colors in the Spring collections are led by Rose Quartz, a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, Rose Quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months.

The fashion and design communities, and consequently, consumers, have been in love with orange for several seasons. Coming to the fore this Spring is, Peach Echo, a shade that emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an all-encompassing, tempered companion in the playful orange family.

Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times. A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space.

A maritime-inspired blue, Snorkel Blue plays in the navy family, but with a happier, more energetic context. The name alone implies a relaxing vacation and encourages escape. It is striking yet still, with lots of activity bursting from its undertones.

While the majority of the Spring/Summer palette trends toward calmness, a few diversions from the theme emerge that offer a contrast. With Buttercup designers reveal a shining beacon transporting its wearer to a happier, sunnier place.

A shade of aqua that leans toward the green family, Limpet Shell is clear, clean and defined. Suggestive of clarity and freshness, its crisp and modern influences evoke a deliberate, mindful tranquility.

As in most any season, the need for neutrals arises. Essentially a basic, the subtlety of the lilac undertone in, Lilac Gray, adds a distinctive edge to this classic gray shade.

The high energy Fiesta is a harbinger of excitement, encouraging free-spirited exploration to unknown but welcoming locales. A strong and fiery, yellow-based red, the vivid Fiesta provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette.

A transitional color that will take us through the seasons, Iced Coffee manifests as another strong neutral for the season. With its natural earthy quality, the softness and subtlety of Iced Coffee creates a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season’s palette.

Green Flash calls on its wearer to explore, push the envelope and escape the mundane, radiating an openness that combines with the rest of the palette in unexpected but serendipitous ways. The popularity of this brilliant hue is representative of nature’s persistent influence even in urban environments, a trend continuing to inspire designers.

Looking forward to learning about the 2016 Pantone Color of the Year.

MakeUp in Paris 2015

Following extensive market research, BASF has identified the most influential cultural drivers set to impact the beauty trends in 2016 and beyond. The company will address its findings at this year’s MakeUp in Paris trade show from June 18 to 19, 2015 at the Carrousel du Louvre – introducing tailored products and solutions that help manufacturers of decorative cosmetics leverage the opportunities these trends bring with them. “We have been keeping a close eye on regional and global developments, as well as the latest fashion shows, so we can help our customers create products and brand experiences that will really resonate with consumers,” said Valerie Pian-Parison, Marketing Manager at BASF Personal Care Europe.

A new generation of gold synthetic mica

Celebrating a sense of timeless beauty, the “Ancient Wisdom” trend from BASF’s “Color Trends 2016” – a collection of effect pigments and formulations – is based on the ancient world’s ideals of beauty. It also calls for aesthetics inspired by the Renaissance and Romantic eras, which were reflected in the spring fashion shows – with illuminated cheeks, gold leaf accents and bronze glows. In 2016, gold shades will play a key role. In response to this, BASF has expanded its portfolio of gold pearls to include Chione™ Celestial Gold – a new generation of gold synthetic mica. It helps create a pure, white shade of gold and a shimmering glow and shine in various cosmetics.

Preview of BASF’s “Color Trends 2017”

Meanwhile, BASF’s “Color Trends 2017” anticipate that metallic shades of gold will continue to be extremely relevant – but with the focus shifting to bronze, platinum, and champagne. In an exclusive preview of the coming effect pigment collection, BASF is also unveiling a selection of colors inspired by the jazzy hues found in nature: “ALIVE” features saturated, intense colors such as luscious greens, bold blues, and popping pinks reminiscent of juicy berries and vibrant fruits.

Cutting-edge looks with color travel pigments

In the latest fashion trends, classic cuts are being reinterpreted with iridescent tissue, bringing a touch of vitality and vibrancy to timeless styles. BASF’s color travel pigments enable manufacturers to capitalize on this trend in both the cosmetics and personal care segments: Harnessing the latest pigment technology, the ReflecksTM MultiDimensions and MultiReflectionsTM ranges create a dramatic sparkle effect and visual dimensionality, and make eye-catching color travel effects possible.

BASF represented at “Innovation Tour” and make-up artist competition

With its “Luminous Skin Serum to Oil”, which is characterized by a milky texture and a hint of gold, BASF is also represented at the trade show’s “Innovation Tour.” This special exhibition space is dedicated to new solutions selected by the “MakeUp Innovation Tour” jury. In addition, BASF will support the first “MakeUp in Paris Boxing Ring”: Under the leadership and arbitration of the Brazilian Make-up Artist Mily, students of Make-up Atelier Paris will use the BASF effect pigments Chione™ Celestial Gold, ReflecksTM Multidimension Glistening Gold, Chione™ Pixel White and Cloisonné® Vivid Red to illustrate the themes “Roaring Twenties,“ “the Demimonde Years“ and “from the Flower Power Years to the Palace Years.“

Fall 2015 Fashion Color Palette

Having you been following the color trends on display at the February 2015 New York Fashion Week runway shows?  If you haven’t had the time, don’t worry.  Pantone has been doing a fantastic job keeping track of the colors that have been on display.  Below you will find excerpts from a color trend report that they have just released.  It is a must read for all fashionistas and designers.  Below is portion of the article, but you really should visit the Pantone.com website for the full color report.

This season displays an umbrella of accord that weaves earthy neutrals with a range of bold color statements and patterns to reflect a landscape of hope, fun, fantasy and all things natural. The colors are evocative of a love for nature and a timeless appreciation for warmth and security, which are conveyed through naturally inspired colors that remind us of things that are real and protective.

This Fall, designers’ pay homage to progressive moments in American history – from the seductive ‘20s to the bohemian hippie and modernists of the ‘60s and ‘70s – while stringing together an affection for colors and styling that are innately easy to wear by both men and women.

There is one major distinction in the colors this season: A grand shift towards an evolving color palette that is not reliant on color distinctions typically assigned to each gender. This Fall, designers look to sartorial styling and fabrics to define both a masculine and feminine interpretation of hues and color combinations.

The importance of neutrals continues to evolve with Desert Sage, a cool and soothing greenish-gray that serves as the ideal neutral across the Fall 2015 palette. Timeless and unobtrusive, yet powerful enough to make a statement on its own, Desert Sage speaks to the feeling of naturally inspired colors that remind us of things that are real and not invented.

A nod to the ‘60s and ‘70s, Cadmium Orange evokes a sentiment of optimism, fun and fantasy. Both playful and sophisticated in its appeal, Cadmium Orange is a warm, welcoming and subtly dramatic hue that is striking enough to stand on its own or act as a bold contrast. A play on the ‘60s with a twist of today, luxurious Cashmere Rose is a tactile and soft pink hue that renders exactly what it promises. Cultivated in its richness, Cashmere Rose displays a gently persuasive and composed pink that is more upscale than downtown. Both men and women can weave Cadmium Orange and Cashmere Rose with Desert Sage for a bold mix of bright, earthy inspiration.

For more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for Fall 2015.

The top ten colors for men’s and women’s fashion for Fall 2015 are:
  • PANTONE 18-4214 Stormy Weather
  • PANTONE 16-1144 Oak Buff
  • PANTONE 17-0627 Dried Herb
  • PANTONE 18-4726 Biscay Bay
  • PANTONE 15-1340 Cadmium Orange
  • PANTONE 16-2215 Cashmere Rose
  • PANTONE 16-0110 Desert Sage
  • PANTONE 19-4326 Reflecting Pond
  • PANTONE 17-3628 Amethyst Orchid
In addition to traditional clothing and styling, Fall 2015 colors are an effortless fit for beauty. Layer Cadmium Orange, Cashmere Rose and Amethyst Orchid for an exotic eye shadow look, or Desert Sage and Oak Buff for a softer, more natural appearance. Add Dried Herb to nearly any combination for a bit more depth and interest. Biscay Bay provides a sprinkle of coolness to warm undertones or adds a harmonizing and subtle touch to neutrals such as Desert Sage and Dried Herb. Highlight natural tones with a soft and subtle splash of playful Cashmere Rose and introduce sophisticated Marsala for an appealing and enticing vibe.

This color is declared by Pantone to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination, emanating great joy, love and health for 2014.

As our New Year already seems to be a very health-centric one, we wanted to pass along some great health and beauty-focused products in Pantone’s color of the year.

Acquarella Nail Polish:  Nail polish is a fashion staple, able to transform to match any outfit and pull together a look – however, if you’re pregnant, undergoing major surgery or have cancer, the toxins in streamlined nail polish will make you sick. Hope Paige bracelet: The fashion-forward female always needs to look fabulous – but when staying safe is also a priority, turn to Hope Paige to accomplish both! Available in stylish colors and styles, each bracelet comes custom engraved with wearer’s information and is easily recognizable for respondents in an emergency.
