Pantone Love Symbol #2 for Prince

The Prince Estate, alongside Pantone Color Institute™, the global color authority, announced earlier this month (August 14,2017) the creation of a standardized custom color to represent and honor international icon, Prince. The (naturally) purple hue, represented by his “Love Symbol #2” was inspired by his custom-made Yamaha purple piano, which was originally scheduled to go on tour with the performer before his untimely passing at the age of 57. The color pays tribute to Prince’s indelible mark on music, art, fashion and culture.

Prince’s association with the color purple was galvanized in 1984 with the release of the film Purple Rain, along with its Academy Award-winning soundtrack featuring the eponymous song. While the spectrum of the color purple will still be used in respect to the “Purple One,” Love Symbol #2, will be the official color across the brand he left behind.

“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” said Troy Carter, Entertainment Advisor to Prince’s Estate.

The ‘Purple One’ made a statement and challenged cultural norms through both his well-known music and personal style. In addition to the Oscar, Prince won seven Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Purple Rain. Both “Purple Rain” and “1999” were entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the very first year he was eligible.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute said: "We are honored to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, 'the purple one.' A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself."

Will this become the color of the year?  Sorry, the 2017 color of the year was already selected.  Maybe this color can win next year.

Björn Borg “nude” underwear for all skin tones

March 21, 2016 sports fashion brand Björn Borg introduced the Skin Collection; skin toned underwear for everyone. The collection is deliberately launched on the United Nation’s Racial Discrimination Day, as a tribute to human rights and equality for all.
So-called “nude” underwear traditionally only caters to white skinned individuals, offered in tones like beige or blush, despite the fact that an 84% majority of the world’s population has a skin tone other than the standard “nude” colour. To put the light on this inequality, Björn Borg introduces the Skin Collection – an underwear line in six shades of human, following the Fitzpatrick skin scale*.
Nude Underwear Skin Shades
– Nude is not a colour; it’s a concept that everybody should have the right to enjoy. We call it six shades of human and the reason to our launch on the UN Racial Discrimination Day is that the political climate in Europe has been very tough as of late and it is time to show colour. This is our contribution to that debate, comments Björn Borg Marketing Director, Jonas Lindberg Nyvang.

The skin collection comes in a hotpant for her and short shorts for him and is made from a fresh microfibre material to maintain high breathability and comfortable fit.

The collection retails at €32.95 through selected retail and through the Björn Borg web shop, www.bjornborg.com.

The Fitzpatrick skin scale is a numerical classification schema for human skin color. It was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, a Harvard dermatologist, as a way to classify the typical response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. There are six levels in the Fitzpatrick scale, ranging from Type I (which is very light, always burns in direct sunlight and never tans), to type VI (which is deeply pigmented dark brown or black and never burns).

Human skin pigmentation evolved primarily to regulate the amount of ultraviolet radiation penetrating the skin, a fact that the so-called Fitzpatrick skin scale* rests upon. The Fitzpatrick scale is a classification on typical response of different types of skin to ultraviolet radiation and covers six major skin tones; the very same that are offered through the new Björn Borg skin collection.

Pantone Colors of the Year 2016

It is not the color of the year, it is the "colors" of the year.

For the first time Pantone introduces two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity as the PANTONE Color of the Year 2016.  Yes, that is correct.  They selected two colors this year.

Pantone Color of the Year 2016 is both Rose Quartz and Serenity.
2016 Pantone Color Forecast
Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.

Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

Minion Yellow for Fashion

Did you know that Universal Pictures Despicable Me has inspired an actual color called Minion Yellow?

Minion Yellow Color Swatch
PANTONE Minion Yellow is an illuminating, energetic, friendly and fun-loving yellow shade that immediately calls out to you.

The executive director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman (Director of PCI; not the director of the movie) stated, "Just as the sun’s rays enliven us, PANTONE Minion Yellow is a color that heightens awareness and creates clarity, lighting the way to the intelligence, originality and the resourcefulness of an open mind – this is the color of hope, joy and optimism."

The partnership was born when Pharrell Williams, who helped create the music for the Despicable Me franchise, came up with the idea while the Pantone Color Institute, the research arm of the company that charts global color trends and studies how color influences human thought processes, emotions and physical reactions, noted the desire of the consumer to add more energizing color into their lives.

Pantone worked closely with the animation team at Illumination Entertainment to review the existing color range and to identify the most pure representation of the Minions’ iconic yellow color. The resulting PANTONE Minion Yellow is a custom color designed to represent the sweet and subversive characters. An extroverted hue, it projects playfulness and warmth and is suggestive of intellectual curiosity and enlightenment.
Minion Yellow
Illumination Entertainment is an American animation film production company, founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007. It has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Universal Studios and it is based in Santa Monica, California.  The company is best known for its first animated feature film Despicable Me (released in 2010), its sequel, Despicable Me 2 (2013) and its prequel/spin-off Minions (2015).

The custom PANTONE Minion Yellow color will be added to the PANTONE Fashion, Home + Interiors color palette.

PANTONE 16-3905 Lilac Gray
PANTONE 17-1564 Fiesta
PANTONE 15-1040 Iced Coffee
PANTONE 15-0146 Green Flash

According to Leatrice Eiseman the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute™, “Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.”

Below you will find an article from Pantone regarding fashion colors for Spring 2016 collections.  At the end of the news, you are welcome to share your thoughts on the color choices.

PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2016: A Transporting and Transformative Canvas

Influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, designers this season have gravitated toward a palette that is first and foremost calming. Paying homage to the beauty of natural resources, colors emerging in the Spring collections serve as vehicles that transport wearers to more tranquil, mindful environs which encourage relaxation first, followed by curiosity and exploration.

Designers were also inspired by the contrast of urban design and lush vegetation, leading to unexpected color combinations and collections reminiscent of architecture, travel and nostalgia. By creating looks that truly represent the world we live in, both constructed and organic, designers sought to awaken a sense of reflection, followed by playful escapism. Artists, many of whom are known for bold color usage and strong shapes and lines, played an influential role in this season's styles – from Matisse, Picasso and Frank Stella to Esther Stewart and Sam Falls. With Cuba and other destinations south of the border top of mind, designers are playing with courageous color statements that aren't afraid to be vibrant but at the same time are combined with quieting, classic and more natural tones.

A Unisex Palette

Colors this season transcend cultural and gender norms.  Vivid brights give way to excitement and optimism, though quiet stability prevails in this season’s palette. For Spring 2016 there are truly no perceivable distinctions in color choices between the men’s and women’s collections, both of which focus on a desire to breathe and reflect, then play.

The soothing, calming nature of colors in the Spring collections are led by Rose Quartz, a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, Rose Quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months.

The fashion and design communities, and consequently, consumers, have been in love with orange for several seasons. Coming to the fore this Spring is, Peach Echo, a shade that emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an all-encompassing, tempered companion in the playful orange family.

Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times. A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space.

A maritime-inspired blue, Snorkel Blue plays in the navy family, but with a happier, more energetic context. The name alone implies a relaxing vacation and encourages escape. It is striking yet still, with lots of activity bursting from its undertones.

While the majority of the Spring/Summer palette trends toward calmness, a few diversions from the theme emerge that offer a contrast. With Buttercup designers reveal a shining beacon transporting its wearer to a happier, sunnier place.

A shade of aqua that leans toward the green family, Limpet Shell is clear, clean and defined. Suggestive of clarity and freshness, its crisp and modern influences evoke a deliberate, mindful tranquility.

As in most any season, the need for neutrals arises. Essentially a basic, the subtlety of the lilac undertone in, Lilac Gray, adds a distinctive edge to this classic gray shade.

The high energy Fiesta is a harbinger of excitement, encouraging free-spirited exploration to unknown but welcoming locales. A strong and fiery, yellow-based red, the vivid Fiesta provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette.

A transitional color that will take us through the seasons, Iced Coffee manifests as another strong neutral for the season. With its natural earthy quality, the softness and subtlety of Iced Coffee creates a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season’s palette.

Green Flash calls on its wearer to explore, push the envelope and escape the mundane, radiating an openness that combines with the rest of the palette in unexpected but serendipitous ways. The popularity of this brilliant hue is representative of nature’s persistent influence even in urban environments, a trend continuing to inspire designers.

Looking forward to learning about the 2016 Pantone Color of the Year.

Dreadlocks, Weed, Patchouli Fashion Police

What the heck is going on at the Fashion Police show?  Sure, momma Joan is no longer with us to keep the kids in check, but who would have expected them to get this out of control.

On February 23, 2015 comments had been made referencing the dreadlocked hairstyle that Zendaya wore to the Oscars.  The comments Giuliana made was essentially that the Zendaya's hair (dreadlocks) suggested the possible smell of patchouli oil or weed.  It appears that Kelly Osbourne possibly felt that rather than a failed attempt at humor, Giuliana's comments about incense and weed was mean spirited toward a particular race.  Ranic later apologized, but Kelly apparently did not accept.

Do dreadlocks make you think of incense or marijuana?

Bing Image Search Dreadlocks March 2015

It is rather curious as to why Kelly associated comments about weed & incense to a particular ethnic group.  Not sure that fair minded people would jump to that conclusion.  Do "all" races use incense?  Yes.  Are all races capable of wearing the dreadlock hair style?  Yes.  Do all races use weed?  Yes.  Let's all take a lesson from the Rasta lifestyle and chill out about this issue.

On February 27, 2015 E! said in a statement that Kelly Osbourne was leaving the Fashion Police show to pursue other opportunities.

Here is what Kelly had to say on February 24, 2015.
Patchouli is a species of plant from the genus Pogostemon.  The heavy and strong scent of patchouli has been used for centuries in perfumes and, more recently, in incense, insect repellents, and alternative medicines. Extraction of patchouli's essential oil is by steam distillation of the leaves, requiring rupture of its cell walls by steam scalding, light fermentation, or drying.  Patchouli is an important ingredient in East Asian incense.  Patchouli is an important ingredient in incense.  Both patchouli oil and incense underwent a surge in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s in the US and Europe, mainly as a result of the hippie movement of those decades.

According to some Rastafari,[3] the etymology of the word "cannabis" and similar terms in all the languages of the Near East may be traced to the Hebrew "qaneh bosm" קנה-בשם as one of the herbs that God commanded Moses to include in his preparation of sacred anointing perfume in Exodus 30:23; the Hebrew term also appears in Isaiah 43:24; Jeremiah 6:20; Ezekiel 27:19; and Song of Songs 4:14. Deutero-canonical and canonical references to the patriarchs Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses "burning incense before the Lord" are also applied, and many Rastas today refer to cannabis by the term "ishence"—a slightly changed form of the English word incense.

Zendaya Dreadlocks 2015 Oscars
Dreadlocks, also dreads or Jata (Hindi), are matted coils of hair. Most dreadlocks are usually intentionally formed; because of the variety of different hair textures, various methods are used to encourage the formation of locks such as backcombing. Additionally, leaving long hair to its own devices by not brushing or cutting the hair will encourage it to tangle together as it grows, leading to twisted, matted ropes of hair known as dreadlocks. The latter method is typically referred to as the neglect, natural, organic, or freeform method. A common misconception is that those who have dreadlocks do not wash their hair, but this is usually not the case. Many dreadlock care regimens require the wearer to wash their hair up to twice a week.

The Rastafari movement is an Abrahamic religion which developed in Jamaica in the 1930s, following the coronation of Haile Selassie I as King of Ethiopia in 1930. Its adherents worship Haile Selassie I, emperor of Ethiopia (ruled 1930–1974), some as Jesus in his Second Advent, or as God the Father.  Members of the Rastafari way of life are known as Rastas, or the Rastafari.

The Rastafari way of life encompasses the spiritual use of cannabis [1,2].

For Rastas, smoking cannabis, commonly referred to as herb, weed, kaya, sinsemilla (Spanish for 'without seeds'), or ganja (from the Sanskrit word ganjika, used in ancient Nepal and India), is a spiritual act, often accompanied by Bible study; they consider it a sacrament that cleans the body and mind, heals the soul, exalts the consciousness, facilitates peacefulness, brings pleasure, and brings them closer to Jah. They often burn the herb when in need of insight from Jah. Cannabis remains illegal in Jamaica and most of the world and this has caused friction between Rastas and other societies.

The wearing of dreadlocks is very closely associated with the movement, though not universal among, nor exclusive to, its adherents. Rastas maintain that locks are required by Leviticus 21:5 ("They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in the flesh.") and the Nazirite law in Numbers 6:5 ("All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow."). The Dreadlocks represents A lion's mane and Yeshua (Jesus) in his Kingly Character.  Rastafari associate dreadlocks with a spiritual journey that one takes in the process of locking their hair (growing hairlocks). It is taught that patience is the key to growing locks, a journey of the mind, soul and spirituality.

Possibly Kelly Osbourne should chill out a bit (I am not suggesting she smoke a little dope).  Arguing, abruptly quitting obligations, creating poor press for a show that Joan River's poured her heart & sole into for many years... Was that necessary?  Possibly yes, but maybe not.

Learn more about the Fashion Police show from our article about the fashion police transition from Joan to Kathy that we posted recently.

It is important to note that NOT all Rastafari have dreadlocks, nor smoking weed. That is a common generalization.

Fall 2015 Fashion Color Palette

Having you been following the color trends on display at the February 2015 New York Fashion Week runway shows?  If you haven’t had the time, don’t worry.  Pantone has been doing a fantastic job keeping track of the colors that have been on display.  Below you will find excerpts from a color trend report that they have just released.  It is a must read for all fashionistas and designers.  Below is portion of the article, but you really should visit the Pantone.com website for the full color report.

This season displays an umbrella of accord that weaves earthy neutrals with a range of bold color statements and patterns to reflect a landscape of hope, fun, fantasy and all things natural. The colors are evocative of a love for nature and a timeless appreciation for warmth and security, which are conveyed through naturally inspired colors that remind us of things that are real and protective.

This Fall, designers’ pay homage to progressive moments in American history – from the seductive ‘20s to the bohemian hippie and modernists of the ‘60s and ‘70s – while stringing together an affection for colors and styling that are innately easy to wear by both men and women.

There is one major distinction in the colors this season: A grand shift towards an evolving color palette that is not reliant on color distinctions typically assigned to each gender. This Fall, designers look to sartorial styling and fabrics to define both a masculine and feminine interpretation of hues and color combinations.

The importance of neutrals continues to evolve with Desert Sage, a cool and soothing greenish-gray that serves as the ideal neutral across the Fall 2015 palette. Timeless and unobtrusive, yet powerful enough to make a statement on its own, Desert Sage speaks to the feeling of naturally inspired colors that remind us of things that are real and not invented.

A nod to the ‘60s and ‘70s, Cadmium Orange evokes a sentiment of optimism, fun and fantasy. Both playful and sophisticated in its appeal, Cadmium Orange is a warm, welcoming and subtly dramatic hue that is striking enough to stand on its own or act as a bold contrast. A play on the ‘60s with a twist of today, luxurious Cashmere Rose is a tactile and soft pink hue that renders exactly what it promises. Cultivated in its richness, Cashmere Rose displays a gently persuasive and composed pink that is more upscale than downtown. Both men and women can weave Cadmium Orange and Cashmere Rose with Desert Sage for a bold mix of bright, earthy inspiration.

For more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for Fall 2015.

The top ten colors for men’s and women’s fashion for Fall 2015 are:
  • PANTONE 18-4214 Stormy Weather
  • PANTONE 16-1144 Oak Buff
  • PANTONE 17-0627 Dried Herb
  • PANTONE 18-4726 Biscay Bay
  • PANTONE 15-1340 Cadmium Orange
  • PANTONE 16-2215 Cashmere Rose
  • PANTONE 16-0110 Desert Sage
  • PANTONE 19-4326 Reflecting Pond
  • PANTONE 17-3628 Amethyst Orchid
In addition to traditional clothing and styling, Fall 2015 colors are an effortless fit for beauty. Layer Cadmium Orange, Cashmere Rose and Amethyst Orchid for an exotic eye shadow look, or Desert Sage and Oak Buff for a softer, more natural appearance. Add Dried Herb to nearly any combination for a bit more depth and interest. Biscay Bay provides a sprinkle of coolness to warm undertones or adds a harmonizing and subtle touch to neutrals such as Desert Sage and Dried Herb. Highlight natural tones with a soft and subtle splash of playful Cashmere Rose and introduce sophisticated Marsala for an appealing and enticing vibe.

Splash of Summer Color at Caesars

A summer full of color is on the horizon and The Forum Shops at Caesars has the perfect items for the ideal pop of seasonal hues.

White – This season, white is a color and it’s a must-have. For an abundance of versatile looks, at the top of the list is the Pakize shirt at Anne Fontaine. A loose shirt in stretch poplin with short sleeves and concealed buttoning, the asymmetrical flat tail at the front can be buttoned at the collar or shoulder for a ruffle effect. For more variety, the ruffle may be attached at three different points on the blouse for multiple styling options.

Sunflower – The newest neutral, this sunny share pairs nicely with a variety of hues from blushes to black. Use it as a pop of color and energy with a sunny yellow bag, tote, shoe or bracelet. The Carlyle Satchel at Henri Bendel is a stylish designer handbag that makes a stunning fashion statement.

Dazzling Blue – It’s ok to have the blue’s this season – a variety of shades of blue that is. From royal to peacock to turquoise, shades of blue can be both bold and muted. For a stunningly-stylish look, Diane Von Furstenberg has the Bevin Ceramic Sheath Dress in Blue Diamond that is the perfect dress for both work and evening.

Leaf Green - Inspired by the spring garden, varying shades of green and botanical-themed prints are right on trend. Tory Burch has recently welcomed new arrivals featuring the leaf green and white color palette providing a variety of fresh looks. Anthropologie has the Rosae Tank in a green motif that is a great casually-stylish look for summer.

Poppy and Coral – Find the chic and lightweight Tria dress at Elie Tahari. The vibrant sleeveless, crepe Tria mixes two of this season’s most popular hues for a striking look in subtly contrasting colors.

Known as “The Shopping Wonder of the World,” The Forum Shops are a must-see, all-encompassing experience at Caesars Palace. Known (maybe start this out differently since you did it for the first sentence) as Vegas’s original luxury shopping destination, the massive shopping mall includes approximately 160 stores, brand name restaurants and attractions. Its lauded designer stores such as Louis Vuitton, Versace, Christian Dior, Valentino and Gucci represent some of the biggest names in fashion.
