Bibby Financial Services Factoring for Apparel Industry

Bibby Financial Services Expands Support of California Apparel Industry with $2 Million in Financing to a Casual Apparel Company

Funding Improves Company’s Ability to Meet Increasing Demand and Keep Pace with Seasonal Fashion Trends

Bibby Financial Services (BFS) today announced a $2 million factoring facility delivered to a casual apparel company based in California.  The company provides outdoor and surfing-themed t-shirts and other apparel to specialty retailers and to consumers via bespoke e-commerce sites. The funding will boost the company’s cash flow, enabling it to take on larger inventory orders and update the clothing line each season to meet changing consumer trends. The new account is funded and managed by BFS’s office in Westlake Village, California.

The apparel company partners with local artists to design clothing inspired by California’s outdoor lifestyle. In addition to back-office support and advance payment of invoices from the factoring facility, they will also benefit from BFS’s extensive experience in the apparel industry, for which BFS has been a significant source of funding for more than a decade in North America. Notably, BFS used its commercial financing expertise and knowledge of apparel businesses to structure a flexible financing package that simplified the funding process and reduced the amount of paperwork the client was required to submit.

The Financial Mood of the Apparel Industry 2015

If you are looking to predict the emotional mood of members of the fashion industry it is fair to say that it our emotions are partially tied to the financial well-being of the company we are employed by or own.  Below can possibly be a financial attributed mood predictor of our industry from Moody’s Investor Service.  Using the financial forecast may even be more accurate than using a mood ring.

October 05, 2015 - The outlook for the US apparel and footwear industry has changed to stable from positive as sales and earnings take a hit from the stronger dollar, says Moody's Investors Service.

"While the hedges taken this year will partially protect margins, the strong US dollar will continue to have negative foreign currency translation effects on the industry's gross profits for the rest of this year," said Scott Tuhy, a Moody's Vice President - Senior Credit Officer. "The strong dollar has discouraged spending by tourists to the United States, impacting sales at brands such as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, dragging on apparel sales."

The industry's performance in the first half of 2015 was slightly weaker than expected due to high negative foreign exchange translation, weak tourist sales in the US, delays in shipment from West Coast port disputes and bad weather, according to the report, "US Apparel and Footwear Industry: Cutting Outlook to Stable As Stronger Dollar Takes a Toll on Earnings."

Moody's expects constant currency operating income growth to weaken to 3%-5% in 2016 from 5%-7% in 2015 as hedges at favorable rates roll off. The rating agency thinks the industry will be challenged to fully raise prices to offset higher costs at current exchange rates, which will result in overall industry margins falling around 40 basis points in the next year.

However, the industry's overall revenue growth will remain at a moderate 4%-6% through 2016 as companies see returns on their investments in direct-to-consumer and international markets.

"Apparel companies will also continue to benefit from low cotton and oil prices this year, which could help the industry's operating margins," added Tuhy. "However, these benefits have so far been offset by the negative foreign exchange effects."

Moody's subscribers can access this report at https://www.moodys.com/viewresearchdoc.aspx?docid=PBC_1008377.

Below is a previous report from earlier in the year.  Back in April, Moody’s reported that the financial outlook was positive.  Unfortunately, as you have read above, their forecast has changed over the past few months.

April 30, 2015 - The outlook for the US apparel and footwear industry remains positive, Moody's Investors Service says in a new report. Over the next 12 to 18 months, apparel makers will continue to benefit from lower input costs and the expansion of their direct-to-consumer businesses. And for the most part the stronger US dollar won't affect constant-currency income growth this year, though if foreign-exchange rates remain near current levels, it will significantly pressure earnings in 2016.

"We are maintaining our positive outlook for the US apparel and footwear industry, as we believe companies have hedged a meaningful portion of their 2015 inventory purchases against foreign-currency translation risk, alleviating margin pressure in the near term," says Vice President -- Senior Credit Officer, Scott Tuhy. "Pressures are likely to emerge next year, however, as the currency hedges companies took out at more favorable foreign-exchange rates expire."

Moody's is maintaining its forecast for industry operating income growth of 7% to 9% in 2015 on a constant-currency basis, but now expects that it will to drop to 4% to 6% in 2016, Tuhy says. If the dollar maintains its current strength, Moody's could lower its outlook for the US apparel and footwear industry to stable in the second half of this year, but if it continues to strengthen rapidly, the outlook could be revised downward sooner. Conversely, if the dollar weakens, the outlook likely would remain positive for some time yet.

Mergers and acquisition are likely to remain part of the US apparel and footwear industry landscape over the next 12 to 18 months as large, global clothing manufacturers continue their push into lifestyle brands, Moody's says in "Earnings Growth in Constant Currency Will Remain Strong in 2015, But FX Pressures Loom." Aside from the lucrative active wear category, expansion into footwear and accessories presents a good growth opportunity.

"Apparel firms' expansion into footwear and accessories is strategically positive, since it allows companies to present consumers with a more compelling offering," Tuhy says. "And at the same time they're able to leverage their core competencies and global platforms to accelerate growth."

So far this year, Adidas has announced the sale of its Rockport brand, while Coach, Inc. has agreed to purchase luxury footwear retailer Stuart Weitzman.

Galleria Intima 2014: Intimate Apparel Association of India

Galleria Intima 2014 shall take place on 18th  & 19th August 2014 at Grand Hyatt, Goa.

Organized by the venerable Intimate Apparel Association of India, the 3rd edition of the Galleria Intima continues to be a show that every industry professional whether manufacturer, brand buyer, retailer or designer, should aspire to attend.

Here’s why you should be marking your calendar for the 18th and 19th of August, 2014:

Last year, the gathering saw 300+ visiting brands and this year, the 3rd edition of this monumental event promises to get even bigger as the organizers expect more then 600+ brands to visit the show this year. With 20000+ square feet of exhibition space, over 75+ exhibitors and estimated transactions of over 4 billion rupees worth of business, this fair is sure to be a precursor for the industry in India in the coming year.

However, the grandeur of the event is spelt not just in sheer numbers, but also indicated by the bigwigs that grace this occasion and who set the tone not just for the 2-day fair but also for what the industry portends in the coming months. Last year, the event was attended by a laudable 1200 visitors, out of which 300 were intimate apparel brands from India. Many prominent buying houses from India and abroad were also seen at the show. Global giants in the intimate apparel business, such as LYCRA, Chanty Laces, Carvico, Forster Rohner, Lenzing, Noyon Laces, Stretchline, Prym Intimate, Silueta, Lectra, Morgan Technica, Tuka Tech, Trischel, Alok Industries and many more, showcased their merchandise last year and this year too, many more such brands should be watched out for, that will catapult this fair from an important national industry event to a significant global happening.

Eminent Indian industry insiders were also left deeply impressed with the show last year and look forward to August, 2014 with heightened anticipation and optimism. Ashok Reddy of Lovable Lingerie, one of the major brands in the industry, remarked, “Having attended the show last year as well, I can see the monumental progress that has been made in the entire Indian intimate apparel industry. The strength and response this event has received this year leaves no doubt in my mind about the kind of advancement I am expecting in the industry in the next 5 years. The future looks bright.”

Sourcing professionals, exhausted from your failed attempts at finding the raw materials you need at the right prices? The following participation should definitely give you something to choose from:

  • Exhibitors representing Fibers, Fabrics, Laces, Embroideries, Accessories and Trimmings
  • Manufacturers & suppliers of Machineries and Automated Technology
  • Manufacturers & suppliers of Packaging Materials
  • Technology / software solution providers on CAD, CAD, PLM, Production Monitoring, Forecasting, Sustainable Technology, etc.
  • Introducing OEM / Private Label Manufacturers
  • Or are you an intimate apparel raw-material manufacturer looking to significantly expand your markets or scale up your business?
  • Meet Brand owners of lingerie, underwear, swimwear, beachwear, nightwear, sleepwear, loungewear, shapewear, stockings, socks, etc.
  • Senior Management of large retailers, purchasing/procurement heads of department stores, product merchandisers of specialized chains, buying houses, importers, distance sellers, etc.
  • Independent intimate apparel designers

The presence of your merchandise among these people, will be sure to take your business to the next level. The icing on the cake for both raw material manufacturers and buyers, will most definitely planned B2B meetings of exhibitors and visitors.

No matter what sector of this industry you belong to, you need to be abreast of the latest trends, best practices and forecasts in the business. And Galleria Intima does not let down on this count. This year there will be significant focus on learning and knowledge sharing which will commence with a white paper from Wazir Partners, quite aptly titled “Changing Face of Indian Intimate Wear Consumer- From Basics to Function, Fashion & Fun” to discuss the phenomenon of the hour- the evolution of intimate apparel in the Indian consumer’s lifestyle from a basic necessity to an integral part of their daily fashion and leisure demands.

Panel discussions and presentations with participation from influential titans are sure to set the industry abuzz with what the future will bring. And you get to hear it first hand, from those whose opinions truly matter. Just to give you a flavour, last year’s panelists included Mr. Shekar Tewari of Hanes, Mr. Ajay Amalean of Amante, Mr. Sunil Pathare of VIP, Mr. Ashok Reddy of Lovable, Mr. Rakesh Grover of Groversons, Mr. Uttam of Intimate Apparels and Mr. Sumir Hinduja of Enamor.

This year too, a wide variety of the most industry- relevant topics whether the significance of online retail or the strategic pillars of manufacturing, will be discoursed on, discussed and dissected by the people who directly determine the growth of this industry.

If plain dry facts won’t just do for you, get ready for some show and tell with the high-octane ramp walk that will feature the latest designs and collections in premium and high-end lingerie. The special selection of contemporary merchandise on display will also reveal a wealth of insights for you to take home. “For the last two years, the IAAI has left no stone unturned in raising awareness amongst both intimate apparel suppliers as well as brands, about the significance of this platform, that can go a long way in bridging demand-supply gaps in the industry. And, Galleria Intima has achieved this goal commendably, by addressing the bottlenecks in this raw-material deprived industry head-on. However there is still a lot of ground to be covered, despite the tremendous progress and this will be seen to in Galleria Intima 2014. This time the focus is not just on quantitative increase of exhibition space; rather a more qualitative approach is taken. The idea is to get into intricate detailing while also enhance the number of visitors to this event. After all, the ultimate goal is to make this the most important annual event for not just the Indian intimate apparel industry but also all of Asia, as a whole.” Added Mr. Yusuf Dohadwala, CEO of IAAI.

Tired of not being able to truly connect with industry veterans in stiff and formal business settings? Here’s a chance to actually bond with them in a personalized and intimate gathering where you could chat, share a few drinks and build a strong network that may help you crack the next crucial business deal. And if you are lucky, you could be the privileged attendee of an intimate by invitation only gala dinner hosted by the organizers for an evening of unwinding and networking.

Frills such as airport pickup drop facility, the presence of national dignitaries such as free accommodation for IAAI primary members and VIP visitors, networking nights, trends boutique, seminars & panel discussions add further to the splendor of this event.

Goa, the melting pot of diverse cultures, lifestyles and nationalities is not only the one destination in India, truly worthy of this international event but also with its scenic beaches, trendy clubs and quaint cafes makes for the perfect setting to truly let industry professionals mix business with pleasure. So book your tickets now to ensure that you don’t miss this event which will guarantee a bouquet of opportunities for your business.

Apparel Industry Research 2014

What has the apparel industry been up to this year?  Well, as with most years it has been very active.  Although the year is not yet over, we can certainly provide a brief mid-year report.

We have seen many companies come and go as the world economic events take their toll on all segments of the market.  Obviously, the easiest thing to talk about would be the discussion about how the retail environment continues to trend toward online sales rather than brick & mortar.  The e-commerce landscape is growing in volume as well as competitiveness.

Competitive sales help spur an increasingly fragile retail landscape.   The drive to get consumers in front of sales stock is more competitive than ever before. Flash sales, once reserved for high end stock or electrical goods, are this year on the verge of sweeping the breadth of the apparel industry.

Many clothing companies have met with difficult situations this year.  We only have to take a look at the stock market to see that companies are not fairing as well as they have in years past.

Quiksilver – Jan 2, 2014 – July 11, 2014 stock down approx. 62%.

American Apparel – year to date they are down over 9%, but if we stretch this out a bit and look at the last year (July to July) they are down around 44%)

Billabong – if we look at this international stock (Australia), we see they are having problems.  This year may not look so bad, but if we look at 5 years, we see that they are down over 90%. Billabong International Limited. (ASX:BBG)

Coldwater Creek – oops. They are in big trouble.  Women’s clothing retailer Coldwater Creek Inc. announced on April 11 that it is seeking Chapter 11 protection and will be liquidating inventory,
JC Penny – doing OK year to date.  But if we look at full year from July 2013 to July 2014, we see they are down around 50%.

To name a few that have had difficulty in the stock market (caused by apparent difficulty with their business in general).

In regard to sourcing and manufacturing, one of the larger challenges in 2014 is maintaining “responsible” practices.  For example, clothing companies are expected to manage their carbon footprint and maintain a green environmental friendly business.  As apparel manufacturers, it is an added challenge and expense that had not necessarily been as critical in years past.

Omnichannel appears to be an important buzz word for the garment industry during 2014.  Omni-Channel Retailing is the evolution of multi-channel retailing, but is concentrated more on a seamless approach to the consumer experience through all available shopping channels, i.e. mobile internet devices, computers, brick-and-mortar, television, radio, direct mail, catalog and so on

Wearable technology is also taking the world by storm this year. The potential in the wearable tech segment of the industry will explode during the next few years.  Burberry’s Angela Ahrendts move to Apple sent out a strong signal to the technology and apparel industry that something is clearly in motion in regard to the consumers designer to obtain wearable tech.  While the focus will initially be on accessories, taking the lead from Google Glass and Apple’s iWatch, the increased acceptance of tech in fashion will see retailers strive towards developments in technological fabrics and lifestyle appropriate clothing.  Even the 2014 World Cup got in on the action as the referees wore smart watches to help monitor the soccer game.  The Samsung Gear Live smart accessories are also making a move this year.  Some companies like Nike are taking a breather from the smart tech market, but as they move out others move in.

Significance of Directories in the Fashion Industry

In the digital age, search engines have become synonymous with online information retrieval. However, there's another digital tool that holds a vital place in the online ecosystem: directories. These curated listings of websites and businesses are, in many ways, just as crucial as search engines. In this article, we will explore why directories are essential and, specifically, how they benefit the fashion industry. We will also delve into why clothing and footwear companies should consider adding their information to the Apparel Search website directory.

The Importance of Directories in the Fashion Industry

Directories play a pivotal role in the fashion industry, offering several advantages that complement the services provided by search engines:

Focused Curation: Fashion is a diverse and dynamic industry. Directories like Apparel Search are curated to specifically cater to fashion, textiles, footwear, and beauty product companies. This focused curation ensures that businesses can connect with a niche audience interested in their offerings.

Enhanced Visibility: Being listed in a fashion directory increases a company's online visibility within its relevant industry. This visibility can lead to more exposure, potential partnerships, and collaboration opportunities, all of which are crucial in the competitive world of fashion.

Real Shape and Size of US Consumers

BodiData, Inc. a Silicon Valley-based technology company that specializes in generating big data on three-dimensional body measurements and Alvanon, the global apparel business expert, have signed a strategic partnership agreement that will deliver both big data and analysis on the shape and size of the diverse and complex US consumer population.

Under the terms of the agreement Alvanon will integrate BodiData's body dimension data into its own demographic database. It will give Alvanon's apparel sector analysts immediate access to the world's largest database of body measurement data of over one million North American men, women and adolescents.

Using BodiData's big data, Alvanon's apparel industry analysts, will help brands and retailers define exact body specifications for specific consumer demographics and target markets. With Alvanon's contextual insight, apparel brands will be able to update their product fit and sizing, including measurement tables, size charts, grade rules, block libraries and identify new growth opportunities for product and market development.

BodiData, has patented the only multi-sensor handheld body scanning technology for measuring fully clothed individuals. Its database was created through the largest ever North American scan program, using millimetre wave kiosk scanner booths in over 55 US malls and resulting in the largest database of US body measurements in the world with hundreds of thousands of data points for each individual.

"Where Google, Facebook and Amazon may have user interest, behaviour and transaction data, they do not have detailed data on a user's physical body," explained Tuoc Long, CEO and director of BodiData, Inc. He added that BodiData has the potential to deliver a large category of consumer data that no other company can offer. "Alvanon is the only Apparel consulting expert we will be working with in the retail apparel sector.  Its deep industry domain knowledge enables it to extract and utilize the data we collect to provide strategic consumer and market insight."

"Every brand should have a unique DNA 'fit' that is understood and can be replicated through every product and across the supply chain," said Alvanon CEO Janice Wang. "However, demographic data is just data unless it is analysed in the right context. BodiData is generating big data on US consumers and growing throughout the world. Our domain expertise will enable us to analyse and help apparel brands and retailers define their DNA fit for their target consumer population. Better fit will help apparel brands maximize sell-throughs, reduce inventory, reduce returns and ultimately improve customer loyalty."

She concluded: "The US consumer population is one of the most ethnically and size diverse on the planet, so this partnership will deliver clarity to a confused market and enable the industry to make better fitting clothing. Being able to use the database to create custom solutions for the apparel industry is hugely exciting."

About BodiData, Inc.

BodiData, Inc. believes that massive quantities of body dimension data can create transformational insights that will benefit multiple social and commercial verticals including health, wellness, apparel, security, athletics, and ergonomics. BodiData, Inc.'s. Global data platform of over one million body measurements is orders of magnitude larger than any other body dimension database. ECO-DYE by YKK

As a part of environmental activities at YKK Kurobe (Japan) Factory, YKK is developing an “ECO-DYE” approach that, utilizing the supercritical fluid dyeing (“SFD”) technology, allows it to reduce almost to zero the amount of water used in zipper’s dyeing process.

Through its main business, YKK Group is aiming at making contributions to sustainable society by manufacturing and creating new value in cooperation with local communities, customers and employees.

Currently, YKK Group operates in 71 countries / regions including Japan. Nowadays, when there is a strong demand to address environmental problems, strengthen chemicals managements etc. there is especially increased demand to protect worldwide water resources essential for human life and needed for industrial use. In the future the problem of water resources is expected to grow. For the apparel industry, major issues include reduction of water usage, elimination of discharge of hazardous chemicals and waste water in the production process. The apparel industry is taking proactive actions to address these issues. For example, major apparel brands, which include our customers, are joining Detox campaign aimed at elimination of water pollution and discharge of hazardous substances.

As a leading company in manufacturing of fastening products, YKK not only produces quality products, but also pays a great deal of attention to environmental aspects of the production process. Reducing water usage and eliminating wastewater in the manufacturing process of fastening products is becoming increasingly important. YKK is currently working to apply SFD technology, a new dyeing technology, for zipper dyeing. This technology uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as a dyeing medium that makes it possible to reduce water use to nearly zero and avoid wastewater problem. In addition, carbon dioxide (CO2) used can be collected and reused. Another advantage of using SFD is that it does not require drying, that is expected to contribute to reduction of energy use.

YKK is now testing and working further on development of “ECO-DYE” technology for mass production. As of January 2015, commercialization and an actual release date of ECO-DYE™ products are yet to be determined.

YKK will continue to take efforts to develop and spread eco-friendly technologies and environmentally conscious products.

*About SFD (Supercritical Fluid Dyeing)

SFD is an innovative dyeing technology that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) instead of water as dyeing medium. Dyeing is done utilizing carbon dioxide in “superficial fluid” state, which is achieved by controlling the temperature and pressure and in which carbon dioxide has characteristics of both gas and liquid.

For those of you that do not work for a clothing factory or you have not purchased zippers directly, you can simply trust us that YKK is one of the worlds top zipper manufacturers.  This is a company that leads the industry.

Apparel-Industry Insider Trading Ring

Department of Justice and the Securities & Exchange Commission Target Apparel-Industry Insider Trading Ring

This week we read an interesting article on the Forbes website regarding insider trading that may have occurred in the fashion industry.  Obviously these wrong doings are not exclusive to our industry.  Unfortunately, there are dishonest people in all industries.

The following two quotes are from a Forbes article dated 12/03/2013 by Nathan Vardi.

“For more than five years, Eric Martin made a habit of feeding material, non-public information about Carter’s, the Atlanta manufacturer of babies and children’s apparel, to hedge funds and a consultant who tipped off hedge funds. As the director, and later, vice-president, of Carter’s investor relations department, Martin was in a good position to know about earnings results, a corporate merger and even a financial restatement, before the company publicly released the information. Even after Carter’s terminated Martin, he continued to get his hands on market-moving information about Carter’s and provided it to hedge fund investors.”

“The Martin case seems to indicate that the relatively small and clubby apparel industry has seen its fair share of insider trading, making it a prime target for the Department of Justice and the Securities & Exchange Commission, which have both been aggressively pursuing insider-trading cases involving hedge funds.”
