Guess? Verse Gucci Trademark Update

Guess? fights and wins in court.
Guess? fashion brand wins the battle
A French court has ruled in favor of Guess? Inc in the latest episode of a trademark dispute pitting the Californian fashion brand against Italian luxury label Gucci.  Gucci, owned by French luxury goods group Kering SA , had accused Guess of selling products such as wallets and belts which copied or mimicked its own designs.  The Court of Paris rejected Gucci's claims, finding no trademark infringement or unfair competition, Los Angeles-based Guess said in a statement on Monday.
On a historical note, the trademark dispute between Gucci and GUESS concluded in Italy on May 2nd, 2013 after the Court of Milan, in an 83 page ruling, rejected all claims brought by the Florentine-based label against GUESS. Moreover, the Italian Court has ordered the cancellation of certain of Gucci's diamond pattern, G logo, and "Flora" pattern trademarks. The cancelled registrations included 3 Italian trademarks and 4 trademarks covering the European Community. The Court has also rejected Gucci's rights in a "Square G" logo.
In 2009, along with a similar action in New York, Gucci filed suit against GUESS in Milan, the fashion capital of Europe. Subsequent actions were filed in Paris and Nanjing, China. The logos in the Milan dispute were similar to those in New York as were the claims, which included trademark infringement, counterfeiting and unfair competition. The New York case ended in 2012, with Gucci receiving minimal monetary damages and narrow injunctions on a handful of logos. In 2013, the Court in Milan has totally rejected all of Gucci's claims.

The Milan verdict was an important decision and judgment, not only because it has been issued in Italy, the birthplace of the Gucci brand, but also because the Court agreed with GUESS in practically all its principal arguments, ruling that the diamond pattern and floral motifs are common in the world of fashion and, in particular, that the popular GUESS Quattro G logo pattern (also with a single G in the corner of the diamond) has "nothing to do" with Gucci's interlocking double G pattern, one of the principal claims made by Gucci.
The judgment also confirmed one of the key pillars of the GUESS defense, previously expressed in the New York trial, that there is no foundation to Gucci's accusation that GUESS was trying to "Gucci-ize" its brand or attempting to confuse customers and dilute the Gucci brand.
You can read below to learn more about both companies.  Please don’t confuse between the two.

In the Name of Gucci

In the Name of Gucci:  A Memoir, by Patricia Gucci will be available in stores tomorrow - Tuesday, May 10, 2016.

The gripping family drama—and never-before-told love story—surrounding the rise and fall of the late Aldo Gucci, the man responsible for making the legendary fashion label the powerhouse it is today, as told by his daughter.

Patricia Gucci was born in London and is the only daughter of Bruna and Aldo Gucci.
In the Name of Gucci
Patricia was educated in England, Italy and Switzerland before moving to New York to study acting, despite her father's wish that she dedicate herself to the family business. In 1982 after a year of study her father's wish prevailed and she was appointed to the board of Gucci and roving Ambassador in the US and Asia until the sale to Investcorp in 1987.

Aldo Gucci was born in 1905 to Aida and Guccio Gucci – the company’s founder. Patricia's father was the visionary responsible for developing Gucci beyond its Florentine roots and turning the company into a global luxury brand, opening its first store in Rome and then launching in New York in the 1950s. His pioneering spirit led to a string of stores across the US and beyond, establishing Gucci and the Made in Italy brand like no other before him.

Patricia is establishing a legacy of her own, developing biographical projects based on a collection of diverse experiences and a unique perspective.

BOOK SIGNING:  If you would like to meet Patricia, she will be the The Strand Bookstore in NYC:
WHEN:  Friday, May 13, 2016 at 7 pm

WHAT:  Conversation with Patricia Gucci and Wall Street Journal reporter Marc Myers followed by a book signing.

WHERE: The Strand bookstore located at 828 Broadway (at 12th Street) New York, NY  10003

In the Name of Gucci: A Memoir, by Patricia Gucci (Crown, on sale May 10) is the first book written by a direct descendant of Guccio Gucci—Patricia’s grandfather and the company’s founder.  It chronicles her life as the secret love child of Aldo Gucci and Bruna—the woman he fell in love with when she was just eighteen, and remained at his side until his death at 84 years of age. What started out as an affair became a lifelong commitment and for the last 20 years of his life, long after he had been estranged from his first wife Olwen, it was Bruna who was considered his wife in the US, culminating with their marriage in the 1980s. Woven throughout the book is the complicated, but loving father-daughter relationship between Aldo and Patricia Gucci, the first woman in the family to be elected to the Gucci board of directors, and who ultimately became his sole universal heir.

This is a daughter's bittersweet tribute to her beloved father which traces Aldo Gucci's marketing brilliance and stamina in establishing Gucci as one of the world's most iconic brands.  He was the first Italian to set up an Italian luxury goods retail operation in the US, opening on Fifth Avenue in New York, Worth Avenue in Palm Beach and Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, paving the way for the 'Made in Italy' phenomenon throughout the world for countless others to follow in his footsteps.

Gucci Off The Rails

Gucci has gone off the rails.  In other words, they may have lost control of the proper direction for the brand.  Yes, it is very possible that it is I that has fallen out of touch and not Gucci.  However, it is my personal opinion, that the brand is not on track with what had made them successful in the past.  And yes, I do understand that a brand can not rely on the past and must embrace change for the future to maintain relevant on modern society.  However, I always thought of Gucci as classic luxury brand (timeless luxury).  Clearly I have not been paying attention.  Or maybe it has been their company management that has not been paying attention.  Does the following photo of this high cost fashion brand inspire a sense of luxury?  To be honest, it makes me think of heroin.

Gucci DIY Handbag Service

Gucci DIY (Do It Yourself) is a new service dedicated to enabling customers of the House of Creed Boutique at The Forum Shops in Las Vegas to express themselves through the personalization of selected products. The first manifestation of this was launched on 25th May in Milan at the Gucci flagship store on via Montenapoleone, thereafter it will be rolled-out globally at other Gucci boutiques in major fashion cities.
the House of Creed Boutique
The Gucci DIY service will in due course be extended to Gucci's Ace sneakers and Princetown shoes as well as men's and women's ready to wear pieces and Gucci's men's made to order program.

The initiative was inspired by Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s philosophy that the way you dress is how you feel and that men and women should feel authentic and free in the expression of themselves. The DIY service also references punk culture – celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – which is something Alessandro Michele has always found fascinating. Punk held that anyone could become a musician or fashion designer. All you needed was imagination and the courage to Do It Yourself. In many ways, this rebellious subculture was rooted in a desire for self-expression.

The Dionysus DIY service allows Gucci customers the opportunity to add a variety of embroideries, trims, hardware and monogrammed initials. Customization can be applied to both large- and medium-sized versions.  The choice of embroideries include many displaying motifs from the growing selection of animals and plants that bring Michele's Gucci Garden to life, including butterflies, lizards, bees, dragonflies, snakes, roses and peonies. The selections of trim, which come in a variety of colors, are in crocodile, python and suede. Monogrammed letters can be embellished with Swarovski crystals in a choice of colors.

Are you ready to do it yourself with Gucci?
