Nikole Powers and Christie Maruka Tips for Spring 2015

Consider these must have tips for the season ahead from celebrated stylists Nikole Powers of www.inhighdemandblog.com and Fashion Fix’s Christie Maruka www.fashionfixnj.com
Nikole Powers
Spring Trend Watch 2015 from Nikole Powers

Jumper Elizabeth and James
Cream
Designers couldn't get enough of it. It’s less harsh then white for a softer look. Elizabeth and James got it right with this jumper too the perfect feminine/masculine.

Off the Shoulder
Off the Shoulder
Dress: Bcbg

There was a lot of falling off the shoulder, asymmetrical shoulder cuts and just plain off the shoulder dresses. Trade a plunging neck for some shoulder exposure. This spring Bcbg collection is flowy and simple.
Abstract Prints
Abstract Prints

Abstract prints and Mod are two peas in a pod.  I would definitely say 60’s are going to be influencing our Spring.

Metallics from Dion Lee
Metallics
Dress: Dion Lee
Another trend that seems to be resurfacing season after season is Metallics. I love the Modern feel of this Dress without it being to shiny.

Garden Party Florals
Garden Party Florals
Dress: Altuzarra

Spring is about color and flowers and there be Spring Florals to the end of time. Some designers leaned in a more oriental floral bouquet, while others did not. I love the color of this Altuzarra.

Mod fashion on the runway
Mod

I cannot get enough of this trend.  It plays in with the abstract prints. Groovy.

Tied Waist Sash on Runway
Tied Waist Sash
Dress: DVF

So much of this was on the runways. Almost all dresses were paired with a tied side sash like this with hanging ends. Love this DVF style!
Arctic Blue Dress
Arctic Blue

Love this icy blue color and it was all over the runways. My first buy for this will be a pair of trousers.
Crop Top
Crop Tops
Shirt and Pants: Donna Karan

They were here this year and they'll be here the next.  Multiple designers kept this style in their Spring 2015 looks. Donna Karen had some of my favorites.

Shirt Dress
Shirt Dresses

The Shirt Dress, simple and sexy. Easy to throw and casual. Pair it with a belt and some booties.

Sporty Alexander Wang
Sporty
Pants and Jacket: Alexander Wang

No one does sporty like Alexander Wang. Think sneakers, tennis skirts and bold colors. So Street Chic.
Coolots
Pants and Crop: Mara Hoffman

Coolots? I know. I mean seriously how comfortable do those look though? If you’re shorter I would wear with heels if you taller try with sandals for a laid back look.
Accordion Pleats
Accordion Pleats
Skirt and Shirt: Zimmerman

Pleats were rocked all over the Runways. Zimmerman created my favorite version of pleats. They were bold and structured. Alexander Wang pleats came in the version of tennis looking skirts and dresses. Either way you'll be seeing them. About Nikole Powers

Christie Maruka
Spring 2015 Top Trends from Christie Maruka

Spring 2015 had some stunning and very wearable trends. Some of the most popular trends on the runway were the following:

Crop Tops, Full skirts, high -waisted trousers, culottes, trench coats, Utilitarian vests and jackets, fluid drape dresses, Bohemian silhouettes, sheer fabrics, quilted pieces, cinched waists, lots of slouchy trends, ruffles and lace , shirt dresses and cape gowns..

There are so many designers to list, but here are some of my favorite designer shows I attended:

First was BCBG by Max Azria, whose line was stunning with lots of drape dresses, abstract floral prints, and bohemian silhouettes. Classic, enduring fabrications were modernized and softened for comfortable chic.  Beautiful pastel colors, lending a sun-bleached softness to this collection.. Always a favorite for me.
Marissa Webb, (creative director for Banana Republic) presented a mix of flowy-feminine mini-dresses topped with cargo vests, cool shirt dresses and great revamps of the classic trench.
Carmen Marc Valvo modern and clean, plunging necklines, playful pantsuits and sheer over-skirts. Valvo knows how to flatter a woman's figure.

Nicole Miller who played with a lot of ruffles, sewing them onto hems of skinny skirts and stretchy body con dresses and plenty of enticing tropical and floral prints.

Tadashi Shoji showed floor length skirts with crop tops, illusion backs on gowns, plenty of shirt dresses and trench coats, dresses with embroidery and stunning cape gowns.

Zimmerman by Nicky Zimmerman, a new line for me and absolutely gorgeous. Her collection was light and airy, lacy, layered slip dresses, wide-legged trousers with sexy off the shoulder men’s shirting, skirts with extended layers of ruffles, cinched-trench vests, and amazing swimwear too nice to swim in!
Mara Hoffman who came out with a softer direction this season pairing natural fabrics and a muted color palette. Featuring rainbow slip dresses, cutouts, sunbursts and striped motif on swimwear, slacks, maxi dresses and Relaxed Woven shirt and trouser sets.

More of my favorite shows, Calvin Klein, Betsey Johnson,  Trina Turk, Mark & Estel, Carolina Herrera, Altuzarra & Angel Sanchez.

One of the best moments of attending Fashion week is the inspiration I find on the streets of the most glamorous, high fashion city in the Country...NYC!  Since we can't wear the clothes being shown on the runway right now, we sure can wear the clothes I spotted on the streets... as we call it "street style".

We hope you have enjoyed this glimpse of Spring 2015 fashion.

How to Dress for Summer

Yes, swimwear, t-shirts, sandals, and shorts are essential.  However, their is even more to know when you want to know how to dress for summer.  You also need to know where to shop, etc.

Get ready for some sunshine with lightweight tees, graphic sweatshirts for cool nights and denim cut–offs that go with anything.

Light summer denim skirts are lovely.

Alternative Skirt
An instant style statement, and your new favorite skirt. This is the adorable mini-skirt silhouette we all love, altered and destructed to perfection. It's cut from classic non-stretch denim that's been seriously upgraded with heavy elements of wear and the lived-in edge Levi's® is known for. Every drop counts, so the manufacturer aims to use less water. Their designers are constantly thinking of new ways to create the same styles but even better.  Above is Levi's Style #523890001.

Google Fashion Trend Reports

Google Fashion Trend Reports for Spring 2015

As you are most likely already aware, Apparel Search provides our viewers access to various fashion trend reports.  We write our own case studies, and we also often help our readers locate research materials provided by alternate resources.  Today we discovered an new resource that we thought was compelling enough to share with you.   This morning we learned that Google (yes, the giant search engine) is now dipping their toes into the fashion trend spotting arena.  They have recently published a Spring 2015 fashion trend report on their Think with Google website.  Although we are not expecting them to become a full-fledged “fashion company”, they are clearing taking steps to move into this vertical.

What is Google’s plan to help the fashion minded?

By categorizing past apparel-related queries based on similar search-demand patterns, Google was able to distinguish between the trends to watch and the trends to possibly forget.  And by looking at geographic data along with co-search behavior (such as words and phrases being searched alongside a particular fashion), they can get consumer insights into fashions that will most likely be hot this season.  According to the search result research, below are three up-and-coming fashion trends for spring 2015.

Jogger Pants
Midi Skirts

Have these silhouettes been on your fashion radar?  If not, you may want to start paying attention.

It is hard to say if search engines and algorithms will do a better job than stylists, wardrobe consultants, and fashionistas at spotting trends.  I guess that only time will tell.  Next year, we can take a look back and see if tulle skirts, midi skirts, and jogger pants had truly been hot sellers in 2015.

Let’s keep in mind Spring is already well underway.  I would be much more curious if they can “predict” what will be trendy in Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016, and beyond.  If Google can get “future” trends figured out, then I would be super impressed.  Until then, I believe human trend forecasting evaluation will outperform computer trend analysis.  However, I could be wrong.

Is Google attempting to put small boutique trend forecasting companies out of business or help them more easily identify trends?  In all honesty, I am not yet certain.  Possibly, in the future they will be selling data to trend forecasting companies.  Hopefully their goal is not to make sites like Apparel Search obsolete.  That would certainly be mean spirited.

Although Google may not have realized as early as Apparel Search, they obviously now fully grasp that fashion is the world’s most important industry.  They have now actually created a Think with Google Fashion section on their site.

Learn more about color trend forecasting and fashion trends here on Apparel Search.  Sure, if you prefer to give Google a try, you are welcome to do so.

By the way, you may want to read our term article that helps answer, “what is a fashion trend report?”

Long Thin Legs

Although your basic impulse may be to opt for a skirt that showcases those legs for days, a very stylish option is wearing a midi, or tea length skirt.  A skirt that falls below the knee and just above the ankle is incredibly classic, feminine and stunning, and if you have the long legs to pull it off, don't shy away from this silhouette!  (Pair with killer heels!)

Proper Teacher Attire for Grade School Educators

When it comes to the classroom, teachers play a vital role not just in imparting knowledge but also in setting an example for their young students. One aspect of this is the way they present themselves through their attire. Proper teacher attire not only conveys professionalism but also helps create a positive learning environment. However, the question of what constitutes appropriate attire can vary by location and culture. In this article, we'll explore the essentials of teacher attire for grade school educators and consider the impact of location on these dress codes.

The Basics of Proper Teacher Attire

Professionalism: First and foremost, teachers should dress professionally. This means avoiding overly casual clothing like jeans and t-shirts. Instead, opt for business-casual attire, such as slacks or skirts paired with blouses or dress shirts. It's important to look put-together and approachable.

Comfort: Comfort is key when spending long hours in a classroom. Choose clothing that allows for ease of movement and doesn't cause discomfort throughout the day. Well-fitted, comfortable shoes are a must for teachers who are constantly on their feet.

Modesty: Grade school teachers should prioritize modesty in their attire. Avoid clothing that is too revealing or flashy, as this can be distracting for students and unprofessional. Necklines should be appropriate, and skirts or dresses should be at an appropriate length.

MAGIC Trade Show Trends for August 2014

Hal Rubenstein, Guest Fashion Director at WWDMAGIC, shares his top trends to watch for on the MAGIC floor this August.

Outerwear

After a brutal winter in most areas in the country, outerwear is more important than ever! Outerwear with drama is becoming the “go-to” investment piece. Say goodbye to simple and neutral, great outerwear makes a statement and fashionistas need one that will leave a lasting impression.

Leather

The leather trend is not going anywhere. From coats to dresses, pencil skirts to blazers – leather in all different tones is here to stay!

Bold Colors & Prints

Bold floral prints were here for the spring and are staying throughout the next few seasons! Women are not afraid to wear bold prints and intense colors, so they will be seen now more than ever. Rich hues that are more womanly than girly will make their way into closets everywhere.

Relaxed Tailoring

From loose fit trousers to a chic cocoon coat, traditional tailoring with softened silhouettes will be plenty.  An ease of style and comfort is especially important and offers an understated sense of luxury.

Mini Skirts

Warm or cold weather, abbreviated hem lengths are back in a big way and will be lasting a few more seasons! This classic wardrobe staple is completely versatile – dressed up with pumps or down with sneakers – miniskirts are here to stay!

The above trend thoughts are from Guest Fashion Director at WWDMAGIC and Designer of the Hal Rubenstein Collection for HSN.  Hal will be heading to Las Vegas this coming August 18th to 20th to attend MAGIC.  You should keep your eye out for him to learn more about the Hal Rubenstein Collection for HSN.

Clothing Wholesalers: Are they all the Best

How often have you visited a website and read something such as, “Welcome to Company XYZ, your source for the #1 wholesale clothing on the internet.  We are dedicated to providing customers with the absolute best assortment of stylish apparel at the lowest prices”?  If you are an active online shopper like me, you have most likely come across these sites often.   Personally, when stumbling across such sites I often wonder if they are legit or if they are trying to trick me into buying clothing that will never actually arrive after my purchase.   Between you and I, when I see the wholesale dress sites from foreign countries, I am always assuming it is some sort of scam.  I could be completely wrong…

The reality is that the search engines show tons of results for clothing wholesalers.  Unfortunately, I am not sure how to figure out which are legit and which are not.  If you know how to weed out the bad ones, please add your thoughts in the comment section below.

We all know the basic concept of wholesaling.  Distributors that buy wholesale clothing in bulk (very large quantities), can pass along the savings on to customers.  In theory, this helps consumers update our wardrobes while stretching our money further than if we purchased at retail prices.  Most of the sites that I have come across offer what they refer to as “the largest selection of items” and “inventory that changes daily”.   I am not really certain how every clothing wholesaler can be “the best” and offer the largest clothing selections, but it definitely appears that they all like to claim that they are number one in the market.  It is fair to assume that they can’t all be number one.

You may have noticed that most fashion wholesalers indicate that they carry an assortment of wholesale jeans, pants and skirts along with blouses, t-shirts and other tops.  You can also find jackets, coats and other winter apparel with a wide range of belts, shoes, handbags and other fashionable accessories (the list goes on and on).  No matter what size clothing you are looking for, the apparel wholesalers typically claim that have it in stock.  I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have seen a site state that, “We carry a wide range of sizes and styles, helping you look your best regardless of your body shape”.  In addition to regular sizes, wholesalers of clothing usually advise that they have a “wonderful selection” of plus size fashion, juniors clothing, and petite sizes.  If they sell menswear in addition to womenswear they would obviously provide big & tall sizes.

By the way, clothing stores also have to purchase clothing from wholesalers but those are often companies that do not sell to the general public.  Boutiques and department stores buy from clothing wholesalers that sell only to retailers.

Fashion Tips for Plus Girls for Fall/Winter 2014

The following is from guest author Chiara Solloa.

Fall/Winter is here! I am so excited about all the trends for this season.  I chose 3 trends to focus on that are all different

The Great Outdoors

This trend is all about cozying up to a fire and enjoying the outdoors. Cable knit & Argyle sweaters make a statement paired with skinny jeans and riding boots. A great DIY for this look is dress up a simple plaid by embellishing it up with some stones or beadwork. I also love all native prints for this look, think south western printed cardigans and finish your look off with the it bag for fall the suede fringe bag. Denim jackets and beanies give this look a cool girl attitude, but stick with a clean dark slimming denim for your bottoms. Don’t be afraid to layer, mix up solids, patterns and texture. You can elongate your shape by showing off your neckline with a cowl, scoop or v-neck.

Retro

Many designers paid homage to the mod style of the 60’s with Mini-skirts, trapeze dresses, optical patterns, Leather coats, Mary-Janes, and patent knee high boots. If you tend to be heavier on the top than your bottom a Trapeze style dress is a great way to draw attention to your legs. The mod trend also offers up some great patterns in trippy styles that can actually create and optical illusion, look for patterns that start larger from the outside of your waist and get smaller towards your center hence creating the look of a smaller waist. This style is all about vintage colors and chunky heels.

Bottega Veneta

Gucci

Louis Vuitton

Valentino

Luxurious Textures

This trend is all about textile. Get glammed up in velvets, lace, silk blouses, emerald colors, and animal prints. Caplets are a very chic way to cover up larger arms in style pair this look with a silk tie front blouse and a pencil skirt for a femme fatale look A sexy way to create and elongated torso is to opt for v-neck or drape front blouses. Full long ball gown skirts worn high waisted at the narrowest part of your waist and paired with a turtleneck creates an elegant holiday look. Define your waist with belts, cinchers, & empire silhouettes.
