Vintage Halloween Costumes for a Sustainable Celebration

Embrace Timeless Charm: Vintage Halloween Costumes for a Sustainable Celebration

Halloween, a day for ghoulish delights and fanciful frights, is a perfect occasion to dive into the enchanting world of vintage Halloween costumes. Steeped in nostalgia and timeless charm, these costumes not only transport us back to the eras of yore but also offer an opportunity to embrace sustainability through upcycling.

The Uniqueness of Vintage Halloween Costumes

Wearing a vintage Halloween costume brings a sense of nostalgia and authenticity that is truly one of a kind. Unlike mass-produced, modern costumes found in stores, vintage costumes have a character and history of their own. Each piece tells a story, whether it's the flapper dresses of the 1920s, the poodle skirts of the 1950s, or the disco-inspired outfits of the 1970s. They harken back to an era of craftsmanship and creativity that is often unmatched in today's fast-fashion world.

Vintage Watches vs. Antique Watches

Vintage Watches vs. Antique Watches: Unraveling Time’s Tapestry

Watches, beyond their fundamental function of telling time, are intricate works of art and engineering. They embody the craftsmanship, innovation, and aesthetic preferences of their eras. For horology enthusiasts and collectors, two distinct categories, antique watches and vintage watches, hold a special allure. While both offer a captivating journey through time, a debate has arisen regarding which category holds more significance for collectors. Let’s delve into the debate and explore the merits of both antique and vintage watches.

Antique Watches: The Chronological Treasures

Antique watches, by definition, are timepieces that are over a century old, having witnessed the passage of time for a hundred years or more. These horological artifacts carry the essence of a bygone era, reflecting the craftsmanship and design philosophies prevalent during their production. Antique watches transport collectors to a time when watchmaking was a meticulous, handcrafted endeavor. The allure of antique watches lies in their historical and cultural significance, offering a tangible connection to the past. Each antique watch is a window into a world long gone, showcasing the evolution of horology from its infancy to modern watchmaking.

Timeless Allure of Vintage Fashion: A Journey through Time and Style

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, where trends rise and fall like the tides, there exists a realm that transcends time. It's a realm where fashion doesn't merely reflect an era but captures its essence, where garments whisper stories of the past, and where style endures. Welcome to the world of vintage fashion, a treasure trove of sartorial history and enduring allure.

A Walk Through the Decades

One of the most captivating aspects of vintage fashion is its ability to take us on a journey through the decades. Each era boasts its own distinctive style, from the roaring twenties with its flapper dresses and Art Deco elegance to the swingin' sixties with its miniskirts and mod influences. Every garment, every accessory, and every detail tells a story of its time, reflecting the social, cultural, and political dynamics of the era.

Timeless Elegance

Vintage fashion isn't just about nostalgia; it's about timeless elegance. Many vintage pieces possess a quality that's hard to find in contemporary fashion: impeccable craftsmanship. Hand-sewn seams, intricate embroidery, and delicate lacework are testaments to the dedication and skill of generations past. These timeless details add a touch of luxury to vintage clothing that often surpasses modern fast fashion in terms of quality and longevity.

Janie Bryant Vintage Costume Designer

WWDMAGIC is known as a destination for some of the hottest brand launches – from celebrities to bloggers to emerging designers. This year will be no different when renowned costume designer, Janie Bryant (previously of Mad Men) launches her latest collection with Unique Vintage and chats vintage and trends in the WWD Social House.

Apparel Search has been lucky enough to gain access to an interview with Janie which was a quick Q&A.

You’ve been busy! Tell us about your new capsule collection with Unique Vintage and the upcoming series, The Last Tycoon?

I was so excited to discover Unique Vintage as they have beautiful retro-inspired styles in everything from wiggle dresses to sexy swimwear to chic prom looks. Their customer base is so engaged and loyal and we wanted to bring them something special. Working with Katie (the CEO) and the team there is amazing as we all have such a love of vintage and period design. This first collection is inspired by one of my favorite periods – the 1950’s – and includes inspirations from some of the favorites in my personal collection. I’m excited that the capsule is accessible to all at a great price point and available in sizes from XS to 4XL.

The Last Tycoon just premiered on Amazon in July and the production is gorgeous – 1930’s Hollywood glamour with a terrific cast in Kelsey Grammar, Lily Collins and Matt Bomer. I was so fortunate to work with the creators, Billy Ray and Chris Keyser. I get my inspirations for all shows in three ways – the script, research and collaboration. The writers develop the characters, and through costume, I help bring them to life. My team and I do a lot of research in prep for any project, including old magazines, movies, newspapers, historical documents, catalogs, museums, biographies, photos, etc. We search on Etsy, EBay and Ruby Lane for ideas. Then, it is ultimately  a collaboration in design, along with the hair and makeup teams, the set design, and the creators of the show. I buy  from vintage stores, have the garments re-made or create my own designs to be accurate of the time period.

How does your approach with The Last Tycoon differ from your work on ‘Mad Men’?

Summer of Love Vintage Jeans

The summer of ’67 was a defining moment of the 1960s as the San Francisco counterculture movement came into public awareness.  Although fashion of the year traveled well beyond the city of San Francisco.  San Fran was a primary instigator that defined the fashion of the era.  The fact that Levi's headquarters has been based in San Francisco is possibly a contributing factor to why jeans became such an important aspect of the culture.

A generation of of our youth emerged ready to explore the world of fashion in many ways.  The summer of love inspired by life created it's own reality of style. Jeans became an expression of individuality and beyond.

Although denim has been around far before the hippies took root in San Fran, the 1960's revolutionized jeans in many ways.  Many people took their favorite pair of jeans and converted them with paints, patches, glitter, and beads.

Little did everyone know, these burgeoning rebels of the 60's were setting the stage for decades to come.  From their music to their style to their mission in life. The spirit of the 1960's remains alive and well today.

Take a trip to the grooviest time in history. For Spring / Summer 2017, Levi's is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, its youthful optimism and freewheeling legacy.
Vintage Jeans Summer of Love

Vintage Levi's goes WAY beyond the summer of love.

Levi's Vintage Jeans

If you wish to learn more about vintage jeans from the Levi's brand, you will want to know more about key elements of the garment design such as the Big E tab, Little e tab, and arcuate stitching.  Did you know that during World War II, Levi's painted arcuate stitching on the jean pockets.  They did this on the men's 501 jeans and women's 701 jeans so they would not waste raw materials.  This was done as per the government's request to conserve materials during war time.

Emma Roberts Giorgio Armani Vintage Prive' Gown

Red Carpet Green Dress celebrity partner, actress Emma Roberts (“Scream Queens”) showcased a form of sustainable fashion when she arrived at the 89th Academy Awards® wearing a classic Giorgio Armani gown from his very first Prive’ collection. The gown was accessorized with exclusive pieces from Atelier Swarovski Fine Jewelry. This is the first time vintage fashion has been put under the spotlight by Suzy Amis Cameron’s eco-conscious cause as a solution to help better the environment.
Emma Roberts Giorgio Armani Vintage Prive' Gown
Red Carpet Green Dress is always researching ways to help improve the planet and the lives of others,” states actress and environmental activist Amis Cameron. “As a culture, we are inundated with messaging of wanting and needing the latest ‘new’ product. But by recycling gowns, we are making the ‘old’ new again and finding the beauty that already exists. It is an important form of sustainability.”

The spaghetti strap couture dress, which originally debuted in Paris in January 2005, is embroidered with cream crystals and waves of small white jet beads featured in a two-tiered skirt. The dramatic plunging bodice is made of jet and black crystal teardrops and is completed with a black satin cummerbund at the waist.

To complete the head-to-toe look Emma Roberts wore exclusive created diamond pieces from Atelier Swarovski’s first fine jewelry collection. Inspired by nature and driven by science, Swarovski brings conscious luxury and innovation to the red carpet with the Atelier Swarovski Fine Jewelry Collection, handcrafted in a Parisian atelier and featuring Swarovski Created Diamonds and crystals.  Swarovski Created Diamonds are grown in a state-of-the-art lab and have the same optical, chemical and physical attributes as mined diamonds.

To qualify as a Red Carpet Green Dress eco-conscious garment, each piece must either be made from recycled, organic or repurposed materials, use handmade detailing or incorporate natural dye processing. All resources focus on an environmentally and socially responsible design with a minimal negative impact on the environment.

For the 2017 Oscars-inspired campaign, Red Carpet Green Dress partnered with Atelier Swarovski and Earth Friendly Products, maker of ECOS™ Laundry Detergent to help raise funds for MUSE School CA. MUSE School CA is an environmental non-profit educational organization Amis Cameron founded in Calabasas, Calif., with her sister Rebecca Amis. The financial assistance enables students to access a transformative educational experience. MUSE School CA ensures small class size, personalized instruction and learning practices; all set within an inspiring and beautiful campus. Through these key elements, MUSE School CA paves the way in creating leaders of the future. For more information, go to www.museschool.org.

Flight Club Vintage Sneakers at Consignment

It is amazing, but I think that this is actually our first blog post about vintage sneakers.  The reason that this is amazing is because it is a rather interesting and active segment of the footwear industry.  Truth be told, vintage sneakers are as collectible as stamps, old coins, and baseball cards.  Similar to other collectibles, old sneakers are prized based on rarity among other aspects.  Obviously, the style, color, fit, and brand are also important.  But rare sneakers can really fetch a high value.

Along came the internet…

Clearly the internet has made the world of collectible sneakers grow.  It is now much easier for consumers to purchase their desired sneakers and it makes it easier for others to sell the shoes that they already own.

Since 2005, Flight Club has been the most trusted source for sneaker seekers and sellers, effectively becoming one of the world's leading sneaker marketplace.  With a tradition rooted in guaranteed authentic merchandise they have a reputation that began in 1999 with vintagekicks.com

Flight Club established itself as the premier location for both customers and consignors alike.  For more than a decade, this has been the most reliable source for customers demanding authentic merchandise; and it’s the most hassle-free process for independent sellers looking to move their inventory.   The first store opened its doors in April 2005 at 254 Greene Street in New York, immediately expanding Flight Club’s consigning and selling operations. The brand explored locations throughout SoHo and the Financial District — and briefly popped up in Japan — before adding a California shop at 503 N Fairfax Ave in Los Angeles and settling in at 812 Broadway in New York.

What is the business model behind the success of Flight Club consignment sneakers?

80/20 CONSIGNMENT

The do-it-yourself nature of the Internet, from building your own website to arranging auctions and classified listings, hasn’t always been conducive to effectively selling sneakers. VintageKicks.com developed the model in 1999, arranging today’s best practices for showcasing and selling sneakers to prospective customers around the world. Flight Club mastered those fundamentals.

Consigning with Flight Club truly is sneaker selling simplified. The most active step a consignor takes when arranging an 80/20 consignment relationship with Flight Club is providing the merchandise — and that can be arranged by mail on sell.flightclub.com, or by dropping items off at the stores in New York and Los Angeles.

Flight Club stands by your property. They shoot detailed, high-resolution pictures for e-commerce; market high-demand sneakers and obscure classics across its growing social media channels; and they handle in-store sales, storage, and shipping to destinations around the world. And after those sneakers move into the customers' hands, checks valued at 80% of the final sale prices are cut every Tuesday for consignors whose items sold throughout the previous week. That simple. Sellers don't need to bargain, worry about any kind of payment fraud, or personally carry high volumes of product to mail carriers.

It’s what Flight Club does each and every day at industry-leading volumes. It’s an airtight system that’s been at the core of the business since 1999 that no other marketplace can match.

What you can find at Flight Club

From limited editions to unworn vintage sneakers, Flight Club has fresh pairs of your must-haves and your sneaker grails. Today, Flight Club welcomes thousands of daily customers and ship hundreds of sneakers around the world from its two locations. And they’re always guaranteed authentic.  With Flight Club, customers don’t need to camp outside the stores or stay connected to the Internet for raffles, lotteries or RSVP alerts. There are no preorders or reservations. As long as the item is in stock, all customers are empowered with the same opportunity to acquire everything they want.

Flight Club is one of the only places where you can still try on those hard-to-find sneakers — whether they released a decade ago or they're an unreleased Friends & Family pair — and decide if they’re right for you. Whether it’s a rare collaboration that only released internationally, or a limited running sneaker that was exclusive to a small boutique, Flight Club connects you with the items you want.

Visit their website at http://www.flightclub.com/ to learn more about what amazing sneakers they have to offer.

Vintage Swimsuit Advertisements

Bathing suit season has arrived, and while most women won’t think twice before slipping into their favorite bikini, back when the style was first introduced, it caused quite a commotion.

The bikini has come a long way since it was first debuted in the 1940’s.To give you an idea of how the style erupted, ReminisceNorth America’s top-selling nostalgia magazine, is sharing vintage ads of the sizzling suits of summers past.

So take a lesson in the evolution of the bikini, and check out these vintage ads:

1946-When two fashion forward Frenchmen debuted the first navel-baring women’s swimwear in the mid-1940’s, most women were still wearing tame two pieces like this high-waisted suit.

1964-Pop singer Brian Hyland gave the bikini a boost with the catchy “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” which hit the airwaves just as more revealing swimwear arrived on American beaches in the 60's.

1968- Bikinis were everywhere by the end of the decade. The once shocking swimsuit became normal beachwear, and popular brands like Jantzen advertised all-American looks like this.

1970- Designers pushed boundaries with ever-shrinking styles, which included more plunging necklines. Compared to today’s string bikinis, suits like this look modest—but at the time they made a splash!

Launch of Vintage Shopper

Vintage Shopper has launched its new website, which serves as a vibrant community for vintage, retro and antique enthusiasts. With a mainstream love affair for all things vintage, shoppers have never had a greater desire to discover exciting vintage themed shops, services and products.

"We saw a need to create a niche community that helps vintage shoppers make informed decisions and give businesses the tools to build their brand and connect with their audience," explained founder, Bradley Hebdon.

Similarly to Yelp, www.VintageShopper.com offers shoppers the ability to search for vintage businesses, read user-generated reviews and even add favorites to their personal dashboard. To extend the community offline, shoppers can also RSVP to flea markets, antique shows and other vintage themed events.

For businesses, owners/managers can add their listing to the directory for free, where they can manage their contact info, social media links, photos and more. Whether they are brick-and-mortar boutiques, points-of-interest, services, blogs, or online storefronts, Vintage Shopper's goal is to help small businesses promote themselves in an affordable, targeted and effective way.

Furthermore, www.VintageShopper.com offers advice through its blog, where approved experts post tips on shopping, decorating, traveling, dressing and so much more.

According to founder
Bradley Hebdon, "Our blog plays an important role in creating a vibrant and entertaining online vintage community. We see it as a platform for vintage experts to write about what they know best. It's a great opportunity for them to demonstrate knowledge, establish authority and grow their audience."
