Teens Shop for Clothing in Stores

Does anyone shop in brick & mortar clothing stores any more?

Here is our theory:

  • Mom will shop online for price & convenience.
  • Teens shop in-store for the social aspect of shopping.

Yes, this is a very general summary.  Certainly we understand that mom also shops in stores and that teens also shop online.  Our point is that currently the trend appears to be that teens still enjoy shopping in stores.

Even as the internet expands "social shopping" (buy now buttons etc., mixed into social media websites) it is not the same thing as teens shopping in a clothing mall.  Believe it or not, on occasion teens need to physically interact with other teens.  This is why they walk around the mall like zombies.

Although online shopping is clearly taking over the world of brick & mortar, Apparel Search hopes that teens continue the tradition of heading to the mall to shop with their friends.

deLiA’s back for back-to-school

deLiA’s may rise from the dead.  On what was thought to be a “bankrupt” retailer’s website it now says, "coming soon...Fall 2015".   

Also has the #DeliasForever hashtag is ready for action on the site.   You can see it for yourself at http://store.delias.com/

A corresponding Delia*s Instagram post reads: "News flash! Delia*s will be coming back-to-school with you! Best part? Online only = ALWAYS OPEN!" Another post reveals that the shop will be back up and running online in August.

Here is portion of an article posted on the Wall Street Journal on February 20, 2015:

“Tuesday in White Plains, N.Y., liquidating retailer Delia’s Inc. will ask a judge to approve the $2.5 million sale of its Delia’s and Alloy Brands to a group of investors that previously spun off Alloy.  The sale would see the two staple catalog teen retailers reunited.  In 2013, Delia’s sold the Alloy brand to investors Steve Russo and Brian Lattman for $3.7 million in cash plus $3.1 million in assumed liabilities, according to a securities filing. Alloy operates as an online- and catalog-only retailer.  Mr. Russo previously founded FAB NY, a youth retailer, and Artisan House, a handbag company. Hearst Brand Development announced earlier this week the exclusive launch of Seventeen Magazine’s fashion collection at Sears, just in time for the back-to-school season. Delivering the ultimate lifestyle pieces for every girl, this marks the magazine’s first apparel and accessories collection since its inception 70 years ago.


The new Seventeen line is designed to align with readers’ personalities and suit every style for every girl, with a mix of key trends and everyday pieces, from flirty boho to sporty cool and pretty sweet to girly prep. The line, boasting 83 pieces in total, includes printed leggings, denim vests, military jackets, floral dresses, comfortable cardigans and feminine blouses, as well as accessories, handbags, jewelry and footwear, retailing for under $50.

The full collection will be available at 450 Sears stores nationwide as well as on www.Sears.com/Seventeen. Ten specialty shops will feature Seventeen signage, charging stations and interactive elements such as TV’s with the magazine’s content, social feeds, and style videos with YouTube sensation Heart. Furthermore, Shop Your Way members and customers can shop the collection, enter sweeps, and explore exclusive content from Seventeen Magazine at shopyourway.com.

July 15, 2014 the full collection became available at 450 Sears stores nationwide as well as on Sears.com.
