Color & Style Think Tank for Hair

Some of his clients call him ‘Edward Scissors Hands.’

Some say Ed Blum, co-owner of the award-winning Makeovers Salon + Spa in Easton, Mass., just outside Boston, earned the nickname due to his seemingly magical hair styling abilities and innate fashion sense. Others say the name derives from his frenetic, ceaseless push to be at the forefront in introducing the latest styles and trends in his salon.

Whatever the case, the internationally-recognized Blum says it’s not too early to gear up for Spring and Summer 2016. And to maintain his reputation for staying ahead of the curve in America’s $20 billion hair care services industry, Blum has created a unique ‘Color & Style Think Tank” comprised of his staff who together have decades of hair styling experience. Blum founded Makeovers Salon 28 years ago with his wife Norah Blum.

“We have the most talented group of people who are always bringing new ideas to me and our clients,” says Blum. “We encourage creativity and sharing and now we’re putting our heads together in a more formal way. Expect some dramatic style and color surprises to come out of our little Zip Code!”

Blum has styled some very famous heads over the last three decades, and Makeovers Salon + Spa has won Boston Magazine’s ‘Best of Boston’ and ‘Readers’ Choice’ Awards over 18 times in all beauty categories. He is a Northeast cutting and styling champion and has consulted on hairstyles for Good Housekeeping and Brit + Co.

Last Fall, Blum served as a consultant to the L’Oreal stylist team during Milan Fashion Week where many of the Spring’s looks and colors first appeared.  Many of those head-turning trends were spotted by Blum in Milan and Istanbul and are among recent and planned  introductions by him and his team.

Ed Blum has been the stylist for ‘Days of Our Lives’ soap opera star Kristian Alfonso (Hope), and for TV’s Judge Maria Lopez. Makeovers Salon & Spa was the set for the Disney pilot, ‘Postcards from Heaven’ with medium Maureen Hancock, and casting calls with ‘The Rock.’

Among the ‘top secret’ trends that the Makeovers’ ‘Think Tank’ is readying for Spring are hair painting techniques such as  ‘Cyber Color,’ color contouring, color palettes, ‘ecaille,’ color melting, and Balayage. “I can’t go into too much detail right now,” say Blum with a characteristic mischievous twinkles in his voice. “Stay tuned.”

Head-Turning Hairstyle Trends for 2016

Ed Blum, who co-owns Makeovers Salon + Spa in Easton Massachusetts with wife Norah, knows what’s hot – and what’s not – for 2016.

Blum, who served on the L’Oreal stylist team at last Fall’s Milan Fashion Week, is on the cutting edge (pun intended!) when it comes to spotting head-turning trends for 2016. Among Blum’s observations and recent introductions by him and his team at Makeovers Salon + Spa (http://makeoverssalon.com/) :
  • Hair painting – Techniques done so we can’t see where the color is coming from or going to. Some colors will be dictated by how they best contour facial features.
  • Color contouring -- It's all about placement and the shades.
  • Color palettes – Burgundies, purples, vivid blues, teals and blue blacks. Gone this season are the Crayola selection of strong M&M shades and pastels.
  • ‘Ecaille’ / tortoise shell -- Taking three or more sympathetic shades and working them through the hair to create movement; may be applied to any portion of the hair shaft roots, ends. Creates a kaleidoscope effect; adds volume to fine hair for dimension.
  • Blondes take a turn towards warmer shades of strawberry, bronze , and apricot. These shades breathe life into lighter skin and can be custom mixed by an educated colorist to pair with most skin colors; can easily be worked into the bolder clothing that we will be seeing as well as the ivory lacy looks that will be mixed with leather a la McQueen.
Customers have described Blum as ‘Picasso’ and ‘Edward Scissors Hands,’ referring to how he’s always pushing to take the lead, introducing latest styles and trends in America’s $20 billion hair care services industry. He has been the stylist for ‘Days of Our Lives’ soap opera’s Kristian Alfonso (Hope), and for TV’s Judge Maria Lopez. Makeovers Salon & Spa was the set for the Disney pilot, ‘Postcards from Heaven’ with medium Maureen Hancock, and casting calls with ‘The Rock.’

Makeovers Salon + Spa in Easton, Mass

With the 2016 Milan Fashion Week still fresh in his mind, internationally-acclaimed hair stylist Ed Blum didn’t wait long to introduce the latest styles and techniques at his Makeovers Salon + Spa in Easton, Mass., just outside Boston that he co-owns with wife Norah Blum.

Makeovers clients are already buzzing about one exciting technique: the clay-based hair painting technique that, almost magically, allows the stylist to put color next to color without bleeding or foils.  “Customers think I’m joking when I tell them there’s clay in the color developer. I paint the hair with an artist’s brush using a Wella formula that lightens and results in a natural, sun-kissed look – a soft transition even with contrasting tones,” Blum says. “I love how it brings out the organic child artist in me. It’s such a tactile process.  The sky’s  the limit!”

Blum says, “2016 is the year of the clean, smooth look you get from clay.” He explains, “With the right formulation and amount of developer -- properly applied -- the stylist can achieve both the lightest of tones and the richest of color that will not run into each other creating a kaleidoscope of color. When the color dries, it takes on a clay-like consistency that allows the stylist more creativity and freedom. Although the color is drying, it's only drying on the outside. The hair is thoroughly coated which allows an outer shell to form, letting the color closest to the hair stay a normal consistency. It’s such a captivating experience, almost 100% of clients say they’d ask for hair painting again.”

“Hair painting is great both for natural and pre-colored hair,” says Blum. “I I use freehand application of the formula's lightening agents and clays that can allow for various levels of depth in one color process. Limitless creativity of kaleidoscope color. We apply it to dry hair with spatulas and sculpt the color by hand in various shapes and directions to get a uniquely designed multi-tonal, harmonious color result without using foils or other separators. We apply colors side by side, starting with one color on one strand/section, then another color next to it, and so on.  The movement of the hair speaks volumes and dictates how to apply the color. Working with Marjirel, Dialite, and other great L'Oreal Professionnel color has allowed us to create and emphasize the hair's movement. Another freehand technique, Contour Coloring, which has been created by the L'Oreal Professionnel design team, allows for a more subtle kaleidoscope result. Dimension is key!"

Ed Blum, with nearly four decades in the salon and fashion industry, has been the stylist for the ‘Days of Our Lives’ soap opera’s Kristian Alfonso (Hope), and for TV’s Judge Maria Lopez. Makeovers Salon & Spa was the set for the Disney pilot, ‘Postcards from Heaven’ with medium Maureen Hancock, and casting calls with ‘The Rock.’ For Milan Fashion Week, Blum was selected to join the prestigious L’Oreal World Tour as a Black Elite team member for L’Oreal Professionnel. In recent months, Ed Blum and Makeovers Salon were in acclaimed international fashion and style publications Beauty Launchpad, 360 Magazine and Modern Salon. Have Fun with the Messy Bun

How do you decide if you should go with a clean bun or a messy bun?  More importantly, if you select to go messy, what is the best way to achieve the look?
Here is a messy bun tutorial video that you may find helpful.

Go with a messy bun if you want to frame your face.
Messy Bun
This is not the same exact steps regarding the video above, but this may be of further assistance to you if you wish to go with the messy bun hairstyle.

Step 1: Pull your hair into a loose ponytail.  Don't worry about making it perfect. That's the point.

Step 2: Separate the hair your ponytail into two or three section and tease.

Step 3: Separate your teased hair into two sections and wrap the hair in opposite directions, as you would when creating a topknot.  Instead of pinning your hair neatly, you can secure your hair with a bobby pin about an inch from the bottom of your strands.  Leave the ends to fray around your bun and create a messy effect.  If you think that the body of the bun is too tight, you can pull it apart slightly with your hands or the end of a comb.

Step 4: Pull a few pieces out around the face.

Step 5: stop worrying about your hair and go out and have fun.

You should probably check for additional messy bun tutorials and most definately watch a few videos on the subject.

We suggest you also watch the Perfect Messy Buns Hair Tutorial for additional instruction.

If you know other helpful messy bun tips or hairstyle videos on this subject, you are welcome to post in the comment section.

By the way, you may also have interest in learning about the water bottle hairstyle on the Fashion Industry Network.  Did you know that the super stylish messy bun pictured below is the same exact model that was the star of the water bottle hair style.  Yup, it's true...

Festival Braids for Three Days

With the start of festival season upon us and the summer heat just around the corner, it’s important to find hairstyles that are on trend and comfortable for those adventures in the warm sun.
PRAVANA, a global salon professional hair care brand and leader in creative color, invites you to check out our how-to video to help you achieve the best in braid looks. Starting with a half-up do with waterfall braids, transitioning into fishtails for next day hair and wrapping up day three with a coiled up do, these styles were designed to build off the prior day’s look. They are ideal for those upcoming summer road trips, weekend-long festivals, beach days or just every day.

Created by hairstylist Kait Marie, these braids put a twist on a classic, turning it into an edgy, glamorously-gritty look. The how-to video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO83jdtjAHM

The color technique, inspired by the fluidity and color-changes in mood rings, was done by celebrity stylist Danny Moon, the man responsible for Nicole Richie’s lavender locks.

Day One:

1.   Begin with clean, dry, smooth hair. Mist VIVIDS Color Protect Sealing Spray throughout hair. This mist is specially formulated with double UV protection to shield bright hair colors from fading in the sun.
2.      Follow with NEVO Invisible Control for heat protection, texture, and memory long-lasting hold.
3.      Backcomb at the scalp through the top of the head then spray lightly with NEVO Super Shape.
4.      Working from the nape to the crown, take random 1” pieces of hair and curl loosely through the ends, leaving some pieces out.
5.      Backcomb the hair in the crown for full volume.
6.      Starting in the front hairline, create a waterfall braid:
a.      Start with three strands.
b.      Cross the bottom strand over the middle strand.
c.       Cross the top strand over the middle strand and allow to drop out.
d.      Gather a new strand from the bottom
e.      Repeat and continue into the crown.
7.      Loosen the braid, then fasten with a clip. Repeat through the other side.
8.      Cross the two braids, then loosen hair through the crown. Secure the braids together with an elastic band.
9.      Braid a loose strand then wrap around the elastic band and secure with a bobby pin.
10.  Loosely curl the remaining hair through the sides.
11.  Add accent braids, then tease through the ends and spray with NEVO Super Shape to secure.
12.  Take small strands, flat-wrap around a small cylinder then flat iron and finger tease to add texture to the hair.

At the end of day one, you will still look fabulous as you wind down at the end of the day.

Day Two:

1.      Start with Day One look.
2.      Add NEVO Hydra Pearls to the mid-length and ends to tame, smooth and add shine to day two hair. Keep the waterfall braids secured.
3.      Separate hair into two, leaving strands out in the front hairline.
4.      Create a fishtail braid:
a.      Divide hair into two.
b.      Pull a small piece from the outer edge of one side and cross over, gathering it into the other side.
c.       Repeat this process on the other side.
d.      Then working from side-to-side work your way down to the ends of the hair.
5.      Repeat the fishtail braid on the other side.
6.      Backcomb through the ends to secure.
7.      Sprinkle NEVO Lived-In to the braid and pull the braid apart, creating texture, hold, and volume.
Day two winds down and you may head home for a break, but the fun is not over and your hair will still look fantastic.

Day Three:

1.      Start with Day Two look.
2.      Cross one braid over and tuck ends in a coil shape.
3.      Secure with bobby pins.
4.      Cross the other braid under and tuck ends into the first braid.
5.      Secure with bobby pins.
6.      Loosen, secure, and pin hair into place.
7.      Finish with NEVO Super Shape for all-day hold.
Have fun with your hair, and enjoy the festivals.

The Gone Girl Haircut

Rosamund Pike’s performance in Gone Girl needed a haircut to perfectly complement the plot. Don’t worry – no spoilers here – however, the woman behind Rosamund’s striking cut, Sassoon Senior Creative Director, Tina Haukjaer Andersen discusses how to get it and why anyone – including you! – can wear this soon-to-be, iconic look.

“The Gone Girl haircut is classic Sassoon technique with a modern spin,” explains Tina. “All textures can wear this cut – curly, fine, thick, wavy - as long as the cut is tailored and personalized.”

To get this haircut, you first need to have an honest conversation with your hairstylist about your texture and how much time you’re willing to spend on your hair.
  • If you have curls and spend 15 minutes getting ready in the morning, then you can wear this cut naturally. A knowledgeable hairstylist can cut angles that enhance the texture and create a more expanded version of this look.
  • Or, if you tend to invest more time into your hair and like a polished, sleek version, this cut can be styled with a blow-dryer and touched-up with a flat iron for any occasion.
It’s also important to tell your hairdresser the features that you want to highlight.
  • Like to play up your eyes? A fringe is a perfect add-on to this haircut.
  • Love to accentuate your profile? This cut works well tucked behind the ears.
  • Want to highlight your cheekbones? Layers can add variation to this look.
As Tina noted, “The director [David Fincher] requested a seductive bob, so I decided to accentuate Rosamund’s elegant neckline and jawline by keeping the bob short.”

Last, you must select a hair stylist who has the education to cut this look.

“Naturally, I recommend you visit a stylist at a Sassoon Salon or Sassoon Academy location since we all had to master this specific cut to join the Sassoon team,” Tina explains. “However, we train over 180,000 hairdressers a year at Sassoon Academy. Ask your stylist if he or she has taken a Sassoon course, and if the answer is yes, then you’re in good hands. All Sassoon courses cover the methodology behind this cut.”

About Tina Haukjaer Andersen:

Tina Haukjaer Andersen counts nearly 20 years with Sassoon. As a Senior Creative Director, Tina is one of Sassoon Academy’s most sought-after teachers and represents Sassoon at countless shows - inspiring hairdressers around the world, from Bolivia to Berlin, London to Seoul, Paris to Singapore. As she puts it, “teaching is so rewarding.  I love working with so many super talented people and sharing ideas and enthusiasm.”

About Sassoon:

For over 50 years, Sassoon has created and maintained a modern method of Hair Design that continues to evolve and inspire clients and students worldwide. The International Creative Team achieves this world-renowned reputation through an unparalleled system of training and effective skills development that has become definitive – the Sassoon name evokes the best in hair.
